Option 1 – Westshore Kiwi Breeding Facility Facility Overview The Westshore Kiwi Breeding Facility in Napier was established in 1978 and since 2015 the facility has been managed and developed by the National Aquarium of New Zealand and is the offsite holding area for the display kiwi housed at the aquarium. The facility forms a part of the nationally managed Kiwi Captive Program and assist with the rescue and rehabilitation of eggs and young birds from the wild. An average of 27 kiwi are killed by predators every week. That’s a population decline of around 1,400 kiwi every year (or 2%). There is the very real potential that Kiwis could be extinct within our lifetime. The Eastern race of kiwi is the least protected of any of the four races in the North Island and the National Aquarium of New Zealand is actively working with key partners across New Zealand to reverse the decline in numbers. The national breeding programme tags breeding kiwi and the “smart” transmitters affixed to their legs provide data on how long the males have been incubating eggs and indicate the best time to harvest the eggs. The process includes harvesting the eggs in the wild and then transporting them to the Westshore base where they are incubated, hatched and creched on site. The chicks are raised in a natural environment and once they reach a weight in excess of 850 grams then they are deemed to be at a safe weight (i.e. large enough to fend off an attack from a stoat) for release back into the wild. Activity TECNZ Members will visit the Westshore Kiwi Breeding Facility and hear the story of the Kiwi restoration project in Hawke’s Bay from one of the team’s dedicated keepers. This is an exclusive opportunity for the group to see the work that goes into running this great facility, gain an understanding of the kiwi restoration project and amazing process involved in protecting our native icon. To ensure the best care for our kiwi, the tour of the breeding facility will be done in groups of approximately 5 people, the remainder of the group will be within walking distance of our offsite workshop where they will help prepare and plant 500 native tree seeds into ecological plant pots, that when grown will be used at the breeding facility and other conservation areas around Hawke’s Bay.
