CANBERRA Best in the country You will find some of Australia’s best museums and galleries in Canberra including the National Gallery of Australia, National Portrait Gallery, the National Museum of Australia and the Australian War Memorial. Home to the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra has excellent facilities for those who love to live an active lifestyle. The region is etched with bike paths and walking trails and there are plenty of places to swim, kayak and windsurf. Mount Stromlo Park is great for mountain bike riding, horse riding and running activities. Getting around A planned and relatively young city, Canberra is easy and economical to get around. Our suburbs are arranged around several shopping and commercial hubs. There’s a safe and reliable public bus service and a comprehensive network of bicycle paths. Many buses are equipped with bike racks, so cyclists can hop on the bus for longer journeys. The road system is excellent and traffic jams are rare. For interstate and overseas travel, Canberra Airport is only about a 15-minute drive from the CBD. Exploring the region Canberra is in the Australian Capital Territory. Beyond Canberra, the Namadgi National Park includes many walking trails and lookouts and includes the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve where you can see Australian native animals like brolgas, emus and rock wallabies in their native habitats. South of Canberra is the stunning Kosciuszko National Park, home to Australia’s highest peak. Camp and bushwalk in the high country during the warmer months and ski in the winter. The unspoiled New South Wales South Coast is a two-hour scenic drive east. With white beaches and turquoise waters, country villages and wineries to explore. 20 The Australian National University
