FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS STUDY VISAS In terms of the Immigration Act No 13 of 2002, if you are resident outside of South Africa and are not a South African citizen or do not have permanent residence, you are required to obtain a study visa to enter the Republic for the purpose of attending the University. It is important that your visa is endorsed specifically for study at UCT 1. If you hold refugee or asylum seeker status you are exempt from needing a study visa to attend the University however, you are required to produce a valid refugee or asylum seeker permit. The offer of a study place by the University does not bind the Department of Home Affairs in any way to allow you to study in South Africa, nor does it remove the need for you to obtain permission to enter the country. If you are offered a study place, please apply immediately for a study visa. Your application must be made to the nearest South African Embassy, Consulate or High Commission in your home country. This procedure could take between 8 to 12 weeks to be processed, so apply without delay. The application form BI-1738, duly completed, must be accompanied by the following: (a) valid passport (b) a fee (current details are available from the nearest South African Embassy, Consulate or High Commission) (c) an official letter from UCT confirming provisional or firm acceptance at the institution and the duration of the course (d) letter of undertaking from UCT in support of the study visa application 2 (e) in the case of a person under the age of 21 years. (i) the particulars of the person in the Republic who will act as that learner’s guardian and a confirmatory letter from that intended guardian; and (ii) proof of consent for the intended stay from both parents or from the custodian parent, along with proof of sole custody in the latter case (f) a police clearance certificate 3 (g) affidavit confirming conditions of existing visa have been upheld for those renewing a previous study visa for South Africa (h) medical and radiological reports (i) documents relating to marital status if applicable (j) a yellow fever vaccination certificate if that person travelled or intends travelling from or through a yellow fever endemic area (k) in the case of a foreign state accepting responsibility for the applicant in terms of a bilateral agreement, a written undertaking in respect of the departure of the applicant (l) proof of medical cover from a South African medical aid scheme, registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act, 1998 (Act No. 131 of 1998). The duration of your medical aid cover must align with the duration of your study offer and must be renewed annually for each year of study and be valid for the full year, ending on 31 December (for full degree programmes). (m) proof of sufficient financial means (n) payment of a deposit: Provided that such deposit shall be refunded to the depositor after the final departure of the applicant or after a permit contemplated in section 25 of the Act has been issued to the applicant: Provided further that the payment of the deposit may be effected by means of a bank guaranteed cheque or credit card at places where such facility exists. (o) in the case of students from Africa, the payment of the deposit shall not be required: Provided that the Government of the relevant African country submits a written undertaking to pay all costs relating to the deportation of the student, should this become necessary. (p) other requirements as may be prescribed by the Consulate/Embassy We recommend that you contact the nearest South African Consulate/Embassy before sending in your visa application, in order to find out exactly what documents are needed, because requirements may change. It is very important that your study visa is valid 2021 DIRECTIONS FOR POSTGRADUATE APPLICANTS for studies at the University of Cape Town. If you have studied at another South African University or attended high school in South Africa, your study visa needs to be changed for studies at the University of Cape Town. You will not be able to register unless you are in possession of a valid study visa and valid medical aid cover from a South African medical aid scheme for the entire academic year (i.e. ending on 31 December 4 for full degree programmes) and renewed annually for each year of study. Before you can be registered for your programme the International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO) will verify, capture and upload your immigration-related documents (passport, visa and medical aid) and tuition fee payment information to your student record. This process is called pre-registration. Only once you are successfully pre-registered can you proceed to register for your programme. If you hold refugee or asylum seeker status, you will be required to produce a valid refugee or asylum seeker permit for pre- registration, to receive immigration clearance to register for courses. 1 If you are residing in South Africa at the time of your application for postgraduate study at UCT, ensure that your visa is endorsed for study at UCT and renewed to cover the duration of your postgraduate programme. Visa renewals and corrections to visa conditions can be facilitated through the VFS Global Office in Cape Town. 2 The letter of undertaking will be sent by email within 3 working days of having received provisional or firm acceptance for a study place. This letter will be sent to the email address provided upon submission of your application for admission. | 3 The police clearance certificate can be applied for directly at the VFS Global Office, upon making application for the visa renewal. 4 The duration of your medical aid cover must match the duration or your programme; renewed annually for each year of study. 9
If you are residing outside of South Africa during the academic year, while you complete your research or dissertation, you may be registered by the University without having to apply for a study visa. In this instance, the IAPO will require a letter from your supervisor or academic department, confirming completion of studies outside of South Africa, for you to be pre-registered and immigration-cleared to register for your programme. If you do not hold a study visa, you will need to obtain a suitable visitors’ visa when visiting UCT to meet with your supervisor. You will be required to report to IAPO when you visit UCT, to submit your passport and visa details. Queries about study visas should be directed to: 1. The South African embassy or high commission for applications submitted in your home country Or if the application is submitted within South Africa. 2.
