PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS NORWOOD THANKSGIVING It’s long been a saying in the area that there are only two WEEKEND FAIR seasons in Norwood, “Before the fair and after the fair.” This was OCT. 6, 7 & 8, 2018 definitely the mantra in my house as I was growing up. Many months before Thanksgiving Weekend, seeds were ordered, gardens were INDEX planted, tended and harvested, and crafts were planned and created. Closer to the fair, baking Parade ......................................Inside Front Cover was done, flowers were arranged, Presidents Message............................................1 and entry tags were filled in by Fair Ambassador..................................................2 all members of the family. The Directors and Committees.................................... 3 weekend finally arrived, bringing School & Homecraft Division...............................3 with it all the excitement that only the Norwood fair can bring. Friday night was always full of anticipation - what prizes would be won, Lawn Tractor Races..............................................3 how would the float fare in the parade, would our pumpkin be big Rules and Regulations.........................................4 enough? We would help mom tally the points for the Homecraft Norwood Fair Car Show.......................................5 Division and dad would be busy with the vegetable displays. All Antique Tractor Demo & Show.............................5 three days would be spent at the fair with friends and family, taking Horse and Pony Draws .................................... 6 in the midway, the barns, the displays and the shows. All too fast the fair would pass, we would take a breather, and not long after, Heavy Horses ................................................. 6-7 the cycle would start again. I can honestly say that not much has Light Horses .................................................... 8-9 changed in our house, except that now we are continuing the same Ontario Xtreme Cowboy ...................................9 traditions with our own children. Dairy Cattle ..................................................... 9-10 The Norwood Agricultural Society is celebrating a historic Steer Show and Sale .....................................10-11 milestone this year with the 150th anniversary of its first fair in 1868. It is a history steeped in traditions. Some have lasted from Beef Cattle ....................................................... 11 its inception, others have come and gone and been replaced with Sheep Show ................................................11-12 new traditions. However, the one thing that remains the same is Goat Show ...................................................12-13 the society’s commitment to provide a first-class fair that maintains 4-H Club ..................................................... 13-14 its agricultural roots. Although the fair continues to grow and new Schedule of Events.............................................14 attractions are added, the first priority is to ensure that the fair’s focus is to showcase our local agriculture and teach young and old Saturday Entertainment......................................14 about the importance of rural communities. Baby Show/Talent Show.....................................14 The Norwood Agricultural Society would not be what it is today Entry Form..........................................................15 without the dedication, foresight, and vision of the hundreds of Poultry................................................................16 volunteers who have given so selflessly over the past 150 years. Potatoes, Field Roots .......................................17 Whether setting up during the weeks leading up to the fair, serving on one of the boards, feeding volunteers, working gates, helping Vegetables & Fruit .............................................17 with year-round maintenance, advertising, organizing entertainment, Field Crop Competitions ...................................18 managing the books, looking after prizes, or cleaning up when it’s all Hunter Show .....................................................19 over, the work of the fair is done in large part by volunteers. These Western Show ...................................................19 volunteers have taken a small, one-day fair held on rented land, to Western Gymkhana Show ................................20 a 3-day event on grounds that are used by many organizations for multiple events including 4-H achievement days, dog shows, and Homecraft Rules ...............................................20 this year, the RCMP Musical Ride. Amateur Photography...................................20-21 Many people ask, “What makes the fair so successful?” I believe Family Wear ................................................ 21-22 it’s all about tradition. School fair traditions are continued by the Needlecraft ................................................. 22-23 many children who, in adulthood, come back to volunteer. Fair Domestic Science .............................................24 Ambassadors continue the tradition of representing the fair by taking on various roles within the fair community. Volunteers show Organizational Displays ....................................24 up every year to carry out jobs without even needing to be asked. Bottled Goods ...................................................25 Exhibitors carry on family traditions and create new ones. Fairgoers Horticulture .......................................................26 return every Thanksgiving to meet up with friends and family, catch Hobbies and Handicrafts ..................................27 up on old times, and take in all that the Norwood Fall Fair has to Woodworking.....................................................27 offer. I am truly looking forward to carrying on all of these traditions at our 150th fair. See you at the Fair. THE NORWOOD FAIR NORWOOD AMBASSADOR 2017-2018 COUNTRY It has been an honour MUSIC to represent such an amazing event as the 2017-2018 Norwood JAMBOREE Fair Ambassador. The Norwood Fair is the one time of year that we come together to celebrate our accomplishments (Formerly known as Lindsay Country Jamboree) as a community; it is the Norwood Fair Grounds place for generations from urban and rural environments to gather. 3rd Week of July Ever since that single seed was planted back ANNUALLY in 1868, it has now grown into a significant event well known all across Ontario. Personally I have attended the Norwood Fair 17 times, and each time it is more 48 Alma St., exciting, with the traditions remaining the same. Being crowned the Norwood Fair Ambassador was a proud moment for me as it was a dream of mine since I was Norwood, ON K0L 2V0 little. Throughout my experience as the fair ambassador I got to partake in many community events and activities. www.norwoodcountryjamboree.com This included: setting up the fair, welcoming everyone at the opening ceremonies, handing out ribbons at different events on fair weekend, being in the fair parade, For further information: speaking at many community events, attending several fair meetings, being in the Norwood Santa Claus Parade, 1-800-954-998 or and attending the OAAS convention in Toronto. This year at the OAAS convention it was a special moment for the 705-741-6097 Norwood Fair as we received a plaque of recognition of the 150th year of our fair. From these experiences I have acquired many skills that will be beneficial for me in the future, as well as gained a perspective on the amount of dedicated volunteers we have; which is the reason why NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS our fair is so successful. The endless hours the volunteers contribute to the fair; not just on fair weekend but year round is amazing! I encourage everyone to take part in the General Meeting September 10th, 2018 Ambassador experience as it is an incredible opportunity General Meeting November 5th, 2018 that will leave you with many memories that will last a life time. The Norwood Fair holds a special value for Annual Meeting January 17th, 2019 me as it is the time of year to rejoice and be thankful for our accomplishments as a community, our family, and our agricultural foundation. From 1868 to 2018 the Norwood Fall Fair continues to be an opportunity for friendly competitions between friends and neighbours, a community gathering to celebrate the harvest, and a great time to catch up and have some fun for a couple of days. I had an incredible experience as the Norwood Fair Ambassador, and although it is over I will cherish these memories forever. Fred Begg Alexa Vanderhurst Norwood Fair Ambassador, 2017-2018 Would you like to be a Fair Ambassador? Ambassador Competition is held each August. If you are between the Ages of 17 - 24 as of August 1st, 2018 YOU are invited to compete! Please contact Ashley Calder norwoodfairambassador@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you. 2 • Norwood Thanksgiving Fall Fair 2018: “Proud of the Past, Poised for the Future”
