What is Safety?

Safety: the condition of being protected from or
unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury.

Why is safety important?

To protect ourselves from danger

To protect others from endangering themselves

To understand the difference between something
dangerous and something that is not

What FIRST Requires for Safety

Instilling a culture of safety is a value that every individual
in the FIRST® community must embrace as we pursue
the mission and vision of FIRST. FIRST Robotics
Competition has adopted safety as a core value and
has established the framework for safety leadership in
   all aspects of the program.

Direct from the FIRST Safety handbook

Be familiar with this manual, as well as understand and follow established
safety requirements applicable to your work area.

Be familiar with any site restrictions listed in the “Site Info” listed on event entry
on the FIRST Robotics Competition Team and Event Search page
   regarding competition site location(s).

Work in a safe and responsible manner.

Use personal protective equipment (PPE), safeguards, and other safety
  equipment as required.

Identify and report any unsafe or hazardous conditions to the student Safety
Captain, Mentor, and/or Safety Advisor. This includes work practices that
may cause an accident. Encourage safe behaviors in everyone around you.

                                                                         5

Machine” even when you are using your personal social media
      accounts.

Make sure your email addresses and profile pictures are
     “business” appropriate

Make sure you have your cellphone on you at all times

You should have a buddy

Don’t give out your personal information to people you
don’t know even if they seem nice

If you see someone not on our team acting in an unsafe
way, it is okay to tell them to stop being unsafe because
it could put yourself in danger

                                                      14

How to Handle Batteries

Don’t plug batteries into each other

Hold batteries with TWO hands

Batteries are like babies. They are
fragile, they are very expensive, and
they make a mess if you drop them

We use a battery beacon to test how
    charged the batteries are
If you do drop a battery, notify a
mentor right away even if it does not
crack open. DO NOT plug a
dropped battery back into a charger 18
