2015 Nelson Mandela Internship Program
Description
Generously supported by Manulife Financial, the Faculty of Information (i.e., the iSchool), in cooperation with
the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF), is offering placements at the NMF’s Centre of Memory to help with the
design and development of a physical and virtual Mandela archives.

The NMF’s Centre of Memory Project, carrying Mr. Mandela’s personal endorsement, is committed to document
and disseminate information about, and to contribute to, on-going struggles for justice—in particular those to
which Mr. Mandela and his comrades dedicated their lives. The Centre is supporting this mandate by building a
public resource with four user interfaces:
    1. A web-based portal to materials all over the world relating to Mr. Mandela’s life and work—using
        leading edge electronic technologies (a global virtual archives);
    2. A readily accessible collection of archival and related materials located at Constitution Hill—as a site of
        excellence integrated with the Hill’s range of heritage and tourist services (a physical archive);
    3. A diverse, innovative public education and outreach program—including publication series, traveling
        exhibitions, study and internship projects; and
    4. An integrated Nelson Mandela Foundation knowledge management resource feeding into and enriching
        all NMF programs and projects.

As part of the third goal, the Centre of Memory has established an internship program to enable young people
and students from around the world to contribute to this fundamentally important enterprise. Interns live in
Johannesburg for 3 months, and undertake a variety of projects supporting the work of the Centre.

Objectives of the Internship
The Internship Program provides an opportunity for students to receive international work experience directly
related to their field of study. Students will also gain a profound understanding of the role that museums,
archives and libraries can play as agents for social justice and universal equality.

The visibility and significance of the project provides students with a once-in-a-lifetime experience to assist in
making the vision of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory a reality. Students will gain invaluable insights into
South African history and culture, and into the impact of oppression and inequality, the anti-apartheid
movement, social justice, and the continuing walk to freedom.

Duration
The internship will last 3 months during the period between May – mid-August.
