Other COVID-19 Vaccine Candidates in the Pipeline ▪ Johnson & Johnson ▪ Johnson & Johnson is testing a vaccine known as JNJ-78436735 or Ad26.COV2.S. Results from a clinical trial are expected in January 2021. Of the leading vaccine candidates, this is the easiest to distribute, requiring just one dose and standard refrigeration. ▪ Update: Johnson & Johnson filed an application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for an emergency use authorization (EUA) for its COVID-19 vaccine. Last week the company announced that its phase 3 clinical trials included nearly 44,000 people, and its single-dose vaccine was shown to be 66% percent effective at preventing moderate to severe illness and 85% effective against severe coronavirus illness. The trials revealed no significant side effects from the vaccinations. ▪ An independent FDA panel will now review the data from J&J’s clinical trials and hold a public meeting on February 26 to discuss whether to grant the authorization. ▪ If the FDA grants the EUA, an advisory panel for CDC would then meet publicly to recommend how the vaccine should be used. If the J&J vaccine is authorized, it would join vaccines produced by Pfizer- BioNTech and Moderna-NIH, which are already being used to vaccinate millions of Americans. 9
Other COVID-19 Vaccine Candidates in the Pipeline ▪ Johnson & Johnson ▪ This J&J vaccine differs from the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines in that it calls for only one shot and can be stored in a conventional refrigerator as opposed to the two shots and colder storage temperatures that the other vaccines require. Both of those vaccines were shown to be about 95 percent effective. ▪ J&J officials said they would be ready to ship their vaccine as soon as EUA is granted approved and is expected to supply 100 million doses to the U.S. by June. 10
