Welcome from the Chairman of the Board On behalf of the Board of Baseball WA I welcome you to the Hahn Superdry State League Grand Final Series. 2010/11 once again has been one of growth for the sport in Western Australia and the State League continues to showcase the best of the best in Western Australia. Running a State League Club is a difficult exercise in today’s environment and we rely heavily on dedicated volunteers to work behind the scenes to give the opportunity for young players to play on this stage. This series is a culmination of the work of all these volunteers in 2010/11 and the Board sincerely thanks you for the time you commit to our great game – without you we wouldn’t be here today. To the players and coaches we wish you a great series. It has certainly been an exciting and competitive year for State League this season and the two teams you will be watching today have earned their chance at premiership glory. Good luck. The Board hope you enjoy this showcase event at Baseball Park, get behind your team in a positive manner and may the best team win. Evan Stewart Chairman Board of Directors Baseball WA
Welcome from the Managing Director On behalf of Baseball WA, I would like to welcome everyone to the Hahn Superdry State League Grand Final Series for 2009/2010 Season. This year saw the positions for the finals go down to the last home and away game. The competition for the fourth and final playoff spot went right down to the wire with Wanneroo and Melville fighting for fourth position. The race for second place between Swan Districts and South Perth also added to the intrique to see who would secure home team advantage in the opening round of the playoffs. The Grand Final series is a cumination of hard work put in by all clubs for the best representation for their individual club. Coaches, players, committees, grounds and canteen people, etc. all put in a lot of hard work throughout the season and Baseball WA acknowledges their contribution. Without sponsorship the sport would not survive. A huge thank you to all who sponsor baseball in WA ..... namely, the Department of Sport and Recreation, Go for 2&5, Healthway, Fielders Choice, Barbagallo, The Sunday Times, City of Gosnells, Pilpel Print, Corporate ID, Howling Wolves, New Start Mortgage and Auto Finance, Switch Homes, Dominos and Australian Steel Supplies. Thankyou for your effort in assisting to make this event a success. I wish all participants in the 2009/10 Hahn Superdry State League Grand Final series the best of luck over the next couple of days. Geoff Hooker Managing Director Baseball WA
Semi-Finals Recap from Jobu The first of the State League semi’s is a repeat of last season’s Grand Final. Let’s have a quick look at the “Tale of the Tape” before we break it down … Morley Eagles (1st, 29-7) vs Wanneroo Giants (4th, 21-13-2) Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (if required) 7:00pm at Baseball Park HEAD TO HEAD: Morley 3 Wanneroo 1 SEASON RESULTS: Round 10 – Wanneroo 10 Morley 0 (W: Fish L: White) Round 11 – Morley 3 Wanneroo 1 (W: Sonnenberg L: Thomas) Round 27 – Morley 3 Wanneroo 0 (W: Sing L: Thomas S: B. Dale) Round 28 – Morley 12 Wanneroo 1 (W: Sonnenberg L: Fish) Pitching: Sonnenberg/Sing/White vs Thomas/Fish/Sorensen Jeff Sonnenberg has been the ace of the competition, compiling an impressive 15-1 record over the regular season, and has been backed up by quality youngsters Brendan Sing (10-1) and Jake White (3-2). Wanneroo have been served well once again by Brad Thomas (15-4). Steve Fish (3-5) had a sub-par season and Rob Sorensen (2-3) provided Fish with another starting option on the hill. The bullpen will be vital for both teams, with McDonald, Griffiths and Brandon Dale available for Morley, while Wanneroo will have Ryan, Lourey and Bailey at their disposal. Advantage MORLEY Offense: Graham/Zerbo/Lachy Dale/Brandon Dale vs Riley/Dewey/Dixon/Prosper Put simply, the Eagles offense is the best in the league, scoring 259 runs at an average of 7.19 runs per game. Wanneroo have scored just 183 runs at 5.08 a game. The Wanneroo bats have a lot of catching up to do. Advantage MORLEY Defense: Morley have committed just 27 errors at 0.75 errors per game this season, while the Giants have been rather sloppy in the field, committing 52 errors at 1.44 a game. Wanneroo will need to make a marked improvement in this area if they are to be any chance of making a second consecutive Grand Final. Advantage MORLEY Final Verdict: Morley did not win the minor premiership by some fluke. They have been far and away the best team this season, with their high powered offense combined with their solid pitching. Wanneroo squeaked into the top four after an extremely disappointing second half. Morley should have no problems accounting for the Roo Crew in straight sets. Morley to sweep
The second of the semi final series sees the Swan Districts Black Ducks do battle with the South Perth Cubs, in what should be an interesting series of baseball. Swan Districts (2nd, 26-10) vs South Perth Cubs (3rd, 23-11-2) Wednesday, Friday and Sunday (if required) 7:00 at Baseball Park HEAD TO HEAD – South Perth 3 Swan Districts 1 SEASON RESULTS: Round 10 – Swan Districts 10 South Perth 3 (W: Broughton L: Stembridge) Round 11 – South Perth 19 Swan Districts 9 (W: R Kelly L: K Peacock) Round 27 – South Perth 1 Swan Districts 0 (W: M Kelly L: DiRoma) Round 28 – South Perth 12 Swan Districts 5 (W: Stembridge L: D Peacock) Pitching: Dylan Peacock/Trav Murphy/Todd Murphy/White vs Mark Kelly/Ryan Kelly/ Stembridge/Saupold A classic battle between the two best pitching staffs in the league will be on show in this series. Dylan Peacock (4-4), Trav Murphy (5-14) and Todd Murphy (4-1) will anchor down the starting rotation, while Dean White, Trav Kalin and Kirk Peacock can be used in the late innings if required. However, the loss of Chris DiRoma (7-2) will upset the balance a little. South Perth will counter with Mark Kelly (8-0), Ryan Kelly (5-2) and Garret Stembridge (6-5), with Warwick Saupold and Chris Goadby in relief. Advantage SOUTH PERTH (Just) Offense: White/Needle/Balgera/Barnett and Co vs Burton/Hopkins/Kraus/Barnes and Co The Black Ducks have the potential to explode come playoff time, with 230 runs at 6.39 a game already this season including single game hauls of 19, 16 and 13 (twice). The Cubbies have scored just as easily, plating 222 runs at 6.17 a game, including games of 19 (twice), 12 (twice) and 11 (3 times). Advantage BLACK DUCKS Defense: Swans have been pretty good on defense this year, committing 37 errors at 1.03 a game, while Souths have been sloppy in the field this season, with 50 errors at 1.39 a game. Advantage BLACK DUCKS Final Verdict: The loss of Chris DiRoma is a setback for Swans, who have looked almost invincible this year behind him. However, I feel that the Black Ducks have a strong enough line-up to get them through to the big dance. Black Ducks in 3.

What does Hughes’ future look like? Beat reporter Kelly Thesier answers Twins fans’ questions FORT MYERS, Fla. -- It’s been awhile since I delved into the Twins Inbox and with Spring Training in full swing, it seemed that now would be a good time to check back in to see what’s on the minds of fans. So here we go with the latest edition. Infielder Luke Hughes is back in big league camp this spring. How is he doing and what is his future in the Twins’ organization? -- Gavin F., Perth, Australia Hughes, 25, has been one of the prospects drawing attention in recent days due to his offensive performance. The infielder delivered a walk-off double in Thursday’s 5-4 win over the Pirates and he’s batting .350 (7-for-20) with three doubles and a home run in 10 games this spring. Offense has never really been the concern with Hughes, as questions about his defense have kept him from moving up to the Major League level. Hughes has been used in a variety of positions, including third base, as the Twins tried to find a spot for him. This spring Hughes has been seeing more time at second base and manager Ron Gardenhire said he likes what he’s seen from the infielder at that position. Gardenhire labeled Hughes still a work in progress, but said that this spring Hughes has shown he’s matured as a player and is starting to understand more about the game. Exactly when Hughes might get his opportunity at the Major League level still isn’t clear, but if he can keep improving his defense, the infielder’s bat could at least provide him with a shot. Hughes homers, scores twice in loss RAYS 5, TWINS 2 at Port Charlotte, Fla. Wednesday, March 17 Twins at the plate: Luke Hughes hit his first home run of the spring, a monster shot in the fifth off Rays starter James Shields that flew over the Tiki bar in left-center field. He also scored after reaching base for the third time in the ninth inning.
