16th International Conference on Thermochronology Quedlinburg, Germany, 17 to 21. September 2018 First Circular The 16th International Conference on Thermochronology will be held from 17 to 21 September 2018 at the Palais Salfeldt in Quedlinburg, Germany. The meeting will focus on the theory and application of fission track, noble gas, and other innovative low-temperature thermochronology approaches. The purpose of the conference is to bring together the active international thermochronology community to exchange ideas on the latest developments and discuss important aspects of thermochronology and its modern applications in the Earth System. The meeting will also include a pre-conference field trip and workshops. A consortium of German thermochronology groups is organizing the conference and will be happy to welcome you in Quedlinburg. This first circular presents the conference and venue. Full details of the conference and confirmed keynote and invited speakers can be found on the conference website: http://www.thermo2018.de International Conferences on Thermochronology The bi-annual International Conference on Thermochronology grew out of the international workshops on Fission Track Thermochronology, which have been held since 1978, and the European workshops on Thermochronology. It is the only forum where thermochronologists can discuss fundamental and methodological issues related to their science and its future.
Thermo2018: Program The 16th International Conference on Thermochronology will focus on the following themes: - New analytical developments in noble gas dating and fission track analysis - Diffusion/annealing kinetics and thermal modeling - Noble gas diffusion applied to thermochronology - Interaction between climate and tectonics - Control of surface evolution by deep crustal and mantle processes - Thermochronologic applications to large-scale plate tectonic processes, magmatism & faulting - Combination of thermochronology with OSL and/or cosmogenic studies - Building bridges to applications in geomorphology The conference format will include a number of oral presentations including keynote and invited speakers who are leaders in the field, and will reserve time for panel discussions for each session. A special focus and generous time slots will be given to the poster sessions. We aim to organize a number of round-table discussions during the meeting covering topics such as data reduction and interpretation, laboratory inter-comparison, modeling procedures, standards, databases, etc. Please contact the organizing committee if you have a topic for such a discussion session. Conference timetable Friday 14 to Sunday 16 September Pre-conference field trip Sunday 16 September Registration at Palais Salfeldt and icebreaker reception Monday 17 September Oral presentations and poster session Tuesday 18 September Oral presentations and poster session, followed by conference concert Wednesday 19 September Mid-conference field trip to the Harz mountains, followed by award ceremonies Thursday 20 September Oral presentations and poster session, followed by conference dinner Friday 21 September Oral presentations and poster session Saturday 22 to Sunday 23 September Short courses and workshops, details will be announced Venue The conference will take place in the Palais Salfeldt in Quedlinburg. In 1994, the town of Quedlinburg was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. It is famous for its timber-framed houses. The town has existed for at least 1100 years and has profited from the ore mining in the nearby Harz (Hercynian) mountains. Quedlinburg has succeeded in keeping its medieval and renaissance centre in mostly original shape and therefore is an attractive destination for tourists from Germany and abroad. There will be accommodation in different classes of hotels at negotiated prices. Information on the hotels will be presented on the conference web site. PLEASE BOOK YOUR HOTEL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
The closest international airports for Quedlinburg with connections to many European and international destinations are Halle/Leipzig (80 km), Hannover (120 km), Berlin (170 km), Hamburg (220 km), and Frankfurt/Main (270 km). We plan to organize a commercial shuttle bus service from Hannover and Berlin Airports to Quedlinburg on Sunday 16th September and return on Friday 21st, and Saturday 22nd September. Alternatively, Quedlinburg can be reached by train from Halle (~1h) Hannover (~2 ½ h), Berlin (~3h), Hamburg (~ 4h), and Frankfurt (5 to 6 h). see https://www.bahn.de/p_en/view/index.shtml for connections and fares.
