GRANITE ENCOUNTERS 140 WEST STREET The heart of Sandton has long been a showcase of architectural beauty. The classical facades of the Michelangelo Hotel, Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square hold their own proudly against the glass giants sprouting all around them. Soon to join the ranks of these shining towers is 140 West Street. Designed by Paragon Architects for Zenprop Holdings, the 27 000m² of P-grade office space will be completed in October 2017 to house a prominent international legal practice, as well as one or more other tenants. The two linked towers, constructed on a landscaped podium, have been designed to maximise natural light and minimise environmental impact, with sustainable design elements set to gain the building a 4-5 star Green Star Rating. Featuring a glass atrium, cascading water features, an open lifestyle deck, and exclusive landscaped roof terraces showcasing panoramic views across Johannesburg, the building design is aimed at an intensely tactile experience of the space. Innovation is also high on the list of priorities for this development - an access ramp constructed using reinforced shipping containers has been used for the first time in South Africa. Granite Encounters are proud to be manufacturing the vanities for the bathrooms at 140 West, using ColorQuartz engineered stone. In keeping with the abundance of natural light used throughout the building, the dazzling Frost White vanities will continue this theme – the sloping vanity façade facilitating an interplay of light between the water and the overhead lights. The versatility of ColorQuartz’s range, and Granite Encounters’ manufacturing excellence, are an unbeatable combination. On 5 December 2016, Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital entered an exciting new phase in its long history, when it relocated from the premises it occupied in the city centre since 1983 to brand new premises on the foreshore, adjacent to the Cape Town International Conference Centre. The 16-storey, purpose designed hospital is set to become a landmark in the City of Cape Town. Its new location is easily accessible from all major freeways into the city. Our hospital offers a full range of medical disciplines, many of them highly specialised, to local, national and international patients. It incorporates, among other, 11 theatres, two cardiac catheterisation laboratories, with 61 of its 248 beds being intensive and high care beds for adults, children and neonates. The new hospital building has been designed to international safety standards and incorporates sophisticated green principles and technology to ensure on- going sustainability. Considerable emphasis has been placed on the inclusion of design elements to optimise infection prevention and control and enhance patient wellbeing and their hospital experience. Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital is a living tribute to its namesake, Professor Christiaan Barnard, who performed the world’s first heart transplant in 1967. His legacy of clinical excellence and innovation in South African medicine and that of other pioneers of important medical advances in South Africa are celebrated by means of exhibits at the lift lobbies. Professor Barnard’s legacy is today carried forward by world class specialists practising at our hospital, who continue to achieve ‘firsts’ in medical advancements and to harness cutting-edge medical technology to optimise outcomes for patients. These include, amongst other: • a robotic cardiac procedure for the treatment of heart arrhythmia; • da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery for the treatment of prostate, bladder and kidney cancers; • Berlin Heart and LVAD devices that are implanted to help restore circulatory function in patients with severely compromised heart function, who are awaiting heart transplantation. Our ultimate goal remains to provide our patients with high quality medical and nursing care to optimise their clinical outcome, in an environment where their dignity is respected and they are treated with compassion. NEW STUDENT ACCOMMODATION AT HATFIELD SQUARE ON TRACK TO OPEN FOR JANUARY 2017 The Hatfield Square redevelopment is on track to open its doors in January 2017, offering Pretoria’s student community a mixed-use precinct that will include state-of-the-art student residences, retail and leisure facilities. Within walking distance of the University of Pretoria’s main campus, the new development will welcome students studying at any tertiary institution in the city. “The redevelopment of Hatfield Square is focused on meeting the needs of students, while providing a rejuvenated space for the public. It’s with this in mind that we briefed Paragon Architects to design a safe, accessible environment where students can live, study and play,” says Craig McMurray, CEO of Respublica, the developers driving the new development, along with Redefine Properties through their joint venture, Respublica Student Living. This approach means that each of the four buildings in the development is designed to create smaller neighbourhoods within the precinct, with common areas in and around each building to encourage interaction and movement. Intimate courtyards offer more private, smaller spaces, while an abundance of breakaway rooms and study areas offer the peace and quiet that is necessary for serious study times. With accommodation for 2,200 students, Hatfield Square offers five accommodation formats to suit the needs and budget of every student. However, regardless of their individual space, every student will have access to all of Hatfield Square’s premium facilities, which include a gym, recreation rooms, laundry facilities, computer and study rooms, swimming pool, and unlimited Wi-Fi broadband. 34 // Ci magazine // oct - Dec 2016
