CLUB DIARY 23rd Sep 2021: Awesome Assam by Dr. Shyamanta Barua, Head, Department of Dermatology, Assam Medical College & Hospital The club met this week again in a hybrid mode with members present in physical presence as well on the Zoom Meetings portal. Club President Rtn PHF Sudhir Kumar Jalan called the meeting to order at 19:20.The invocation was rendered by Rtn Narendra Nayak, and President Sudhir Jalan welcomed the Chief Guest as well as members. Birthdays and anniversaries were commemorated after which announcements were made regarding Samrudhia seminar on District Membership and Polio Seminar, the Rotoquiz which was held on 26th & 27th of September and regarding the World Record Attempt by Rotary India with RSSDI – Defeat Diabetes Campaign held on 29th September. Announcements were also made regarding Pulse Polio, which will be held on 24th October, and the Zonal Cricket match which will be on 7th November. Rtn PHF PP Dr Narendra Kamath introduced the Chief Guest Dr. Shyamanta Barua and invited him to give his talk. Dr. Shyamanta Barua started off with an introduction to the beautiful north eastern state, Assam. He spoke of the geographical position and regarding the surrounding areas, and also described the topography of the state. He gave insights into interesting facts like the state tree: Hollong, which is a medium hardwood timber tree which is used in construction and in plywood industry; the state flower: Foxtail Orchid, which is in integral part of Bohag Bihu in Assam, where female Bihu dancers decorate their hair with this flower; the state animal: One Horned Rhino, out of the 3000 rhinos in the world, about 2000 are found in Assam,
thereby making Assam a place which can boast of the largest population of the One Horned Rhino; and the State Bird: White Winged Wood Duck, which locally known as the Deohaanh, is an endangered species, and only about 800 birds are now found in the wild, worldwide. The State River Brahmaputra, he said, is the 9th largest river in the world by discharge, and the 15th longest in the world. About 3,848 km long, the Brahmaputra is an important river for irrigation and transportation in the region. The State Dance is Bihu, an indigenous folk dance which is related to the Bihu festival and an important part of Assamese culture. Performed in a group, the Bihu dancers are usually young men and women, and the dancing style is characterized by brisk steps, and rapid hand movements. The traditional costume of dancers is colourful and centred round the red colour theme, signifying joy and vigour. He then presented an array of breathtaking photographs of the lovely landscape of Assam while vividly describing each one of them. He touched upon the Kaziranga National Park, and spoke on the variety of wildlife which is preserved there. Showcasing some amazing shots of Rhinos and Elephants, he made a compelling case to ensure that everyone would want to visit
Assam. He spoke of the cuisine which has a lot to offer for non-vegetarian enthusiasts. Fish and pork dishes are common and popular. Ranging from the Masor Tenga (A sour fish curry) to Chicken with Bamboo Shoot, the cuisine is sure to leave everyone quite sated after their meal. He spoke briefly on the famous Assam Tea, before talking on the sports activities like Hiking, Angling & Cycling. He wrapped up his talk with a video on Assam: Assam Tourism – Awesome Assam, The TVC. The meeting concluded with national anthem, and the meeting was adjourned for fellowship. OUR ROTARIANS IN THE NEWS The 62nd RAMNARAYAN CHELLARAM ROTO QUIZ 2021 & the Sixth edition of MANGALORE ROTOQUIZ sponsored by Ideals Ice Cream was held on the 26th and 27th of this month. It was organised by Rotary Club of Bangalore in association with the Rotary Club of Mangalore, Rotary Club Madras and for the first time this year Rotary Club of Cochin joined the quiz competition. The Preliminary round was held on Sunday the 26th of September and the finals on Monday the 27th of September. The Quiz was conducted on a virtual format on Zoom. 50 teams from 27 colleges of Mangalore, Udupi, Karkala, Moodabidri and
Puttur participated. Total of 202 teams from 96 colleges from Mangalore, Bangalore, Chennai & Cochin took part in the preliminary round. 40 teams were selected for the semi final round. Quiz master was Rtn Shailesh Shah from the Rotary Club of Bangalore From the semi finals, two teams each from Mangalore, Bangalore, Chennai & Cochin were selected for the finals on Monday the 27th which was on virtual zoom. The following were the top four Prize Winners during prelims from Mangalore. First place: Sartak S Kumar and Sahaj Alva from Expert P.U College Mangalore. Second Place: Srikrishna and Avinash Prabhu from NMAM Institute of Technology Nitte. Third place: from TAPMI Manipal The Fourth place: from St. Aloysius P.U College The First Prize carried a cash Prize of Rs. 10,000/- & Trophy; Second carried cash Rs. 7000 & Trophy while the Third prize was Rs. 5000/- and the Fourth was Rs. 3000/- All participants received attractive participation certificates. We are extremely proud and happy to inform you that our two top teams, i.e. NMAM Institute of Technology Nitte& Expert P.U College went on to win the 2nd & 3rd places at the finals held again on virtual format on Monday the 27th of September. They won prize money of Rs, 25,000/- and Rs. 15,000/- respectively. 1st place was won by Chidambaram Chettiar International School, Chennai. P.E.S. University Bangalore won the 4th place followed by Kristhu Jayanthi Bangalore in 5th place. President Rtn. Sudhir Jalan, Secretary Rtn. Dr. Arjun Nayak, Youth Service Director Rtn. Vinod D’souza, Chairman Rotaract & Convenor Mangalore Rtn. J.P Rao, Rtn. Prasanna Shenoy, Rtn. Digiraj Nair, Rtn Divakar Pai, Rtn. R.K Bhat and Rtn. On 29.9.2021, A World Record Attempt by Rotary India with RSSDI – Defeat Diabetes Campaign was held. Our club too participated in the event. We tied up with KMC Hospitals and Amritha Vidyalayam and conducted the random glucose test. Rtn Arjun, Rtn Yatish, Rtn RK bhat, Rtn Siddarth, Rtn Sudhir Nayak, Rtn Venugopal Puthran, Ann Jeanette and others were present. - Reported by Rtn. $97 million in grant funding from the organization next year for sustainable, Rotary club-led projects. Global Citizen Live, a 24- hour broadcast with events and performances across six continents, aimed to unite people to take action to defend the planet, end the COVID-19 pandemic, defeat poverty, provide education for all children, and promote equity and justice for all. Some of the world’s top artists, celebrities, activists, and government leaders participated in this year’s event to raise awareness and support in cities including Paris; Lagos, Nigeria; London, UK; Los Angeles, USA; New York City, USA; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Seoul, Korea; and Sydney, Australia. In Paris, where Jones pledged Rotary’s support, thousands of people gathered at the iconic Champ de Mars near the Eiffel Tower to see performances from Elton John, Ed Sheeran, Black Eyed Peas, Christine and the Queens, Doja Cat, Angélique Kidjo, and more. Other leaders pledging support included European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. “Every day millions of girls walk miles to fetch clean water, and millions of boys are on the streets instead of going to school. Every day moms and dads struggle to find ways to feed their children,” Jones said from the main stage in Paris. “And every day, members of Rotary and Global Citizen start our days knowing that we can make a difference.” “This year we’re putting a special focus on empowering girls worldwide, opening doors for young women to build brighter futures,” Jones said. “Today

Rotary has worked with Global Citizen for a more than decade, primarily regarding the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. At the 2012 Global Citizen event in New York City, Rotary General Secretary John Hewko and celebrity ambassador Archie Panjabi announced Rotary’s $75 million commitment to polio eradication. Rotary and Global Citizen have also connected at Rotary International Conventions, the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meetings, polio advocacy events, and polio funding announcements. In total, more than $1.1 billion in commitments, 157 million trees to be planted, and 60 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to be donated to developing countries were announced in conjunction with the 25 September event.
