editor’s note As with most people who have undergone pandemic isolation, the refrain “it’s been Board of Directors such a long time since I’ve traveled” has also become “my” song. I took one short Marsha Hosfeld, President trip in March and another in April to connect with precious friends on both coasts. Nancy O’Neill, Treasurer As my anticipation grew, I again focused on aspects of mindful traveling that enrich Kristin Kofoed, Secretary my experiences. The word “travel” almost always signals a break in routine. Rosemary Collins Catherine Forslund The simple act of planning can actually become a great mindfulness exercise. I get Laura Gorton to decide not only which clothing but also which practices will come along with me Tina Hallberg on my trip and which ones can stay behind this time. For example, the act of eating Cristi Hopp Kniess is often random while in transit so I try to plan for nutrition and hydration, particularly Katrina Olson when changing time zones. Sometimes, though, I find that conscious fasting is ideally Mollie Singh suited to travel days, so occasionally fasting gets packed. Patty Stadelman Shiraz Tata Meditating while traveling is one of my most important and sometimes most Elaine Hirschenberger, SSSF, Ex Officio challenging practices. Recognizing my own rhythms and deciding a place and time Pat Bonavia, Past President for meditation when routine is already up-ended requires creativity and inventiveness. This seems especially true in highly over-populated spaces. After arrival at my Staff destination, I always find it helpful to identify where my meditation space will be, Elaine Hirschenberger, SSSF, whether a chair in my hotel room, a lovely spot in nature or somewhere else — and Executive Director then I try to honor that decision every day. I also often bring one small object with Pat Lai, Graphic Design/Admin. Assist. me that I incorporate into the meditation space. Cherie Heck, For me, many an experience of a crowded airport terminal has been redeemed by Arts Programming pulling out a journal. Since I am a lifelong “journaler” at heart, I keep both a small Liz Hiemstra, writing journal and small art journal readily available. I can usually achieve the quiet Marketing Coordinator and focus I seek by zen-tangling or by creating a mandala with colored pencils Connie Wenger, (which are almost always part of my essential packing list). I particularly like these Bookkeeper “inward” practices because they help me focus on consciously being where I am, instead of just passing from place to place. And as a bonus, later, when I pick up a journal written or drawn under such circumstances, I can often recapture the entire experience by visiting those journals. One final thing I always try to pack is a large vial of forgiveness and self-kindness since there are many days that I don’t always live up to my own expectations. A helpful word of wisdom that my friend Pat shared while we were walking (carefully) in the mountains last Friday, is perhaps the best piece of wisdom I’ve heard lately. I take it Womanspace offers some classes using to heart and share it as a new mantra: BE WHERE YOUR FEET ARE. ZOOM.
