YOUNG DESIGNER AWARDS by OVERVIEW The Festival Automobile International organizes every year since 1985, an Awarding Ceremony rewarding projects and achievements related to the automotive world. From Design Grand Prize to Environment Grand Prize, from the Most Beautiful Photo of the Year to the Most beautiful Concept Car, all these universes are selected by members of a Jury from Art, Fashion, Automotive ... Who choose the 2 winners. Each of them receives an award during the ceremony at Hôtel national des Invalides in Paris. In 2013, the Festival decided to focus more on the future and "bet" on it. It wants to encourage young students in design school, to enter the world of automotive design. Thus is born, with the complicity of Jean-Michel Wilmotte President of the Jury, the Young Designer Awards which is sponsored by BMW. The brand gives a cheque of 2000 € to the winners and organizes a private tour at BMW Welt in Münich. Every International schools students can take part of this contest by sending their sketches completed after the selection with a video. Since 2015, the Festival has decided to differentiate exterior design and interior design. 2 Prizes, 2 winners, 2 trips in Münich. All designers on stage

SUBJET 1 YOUNG DESIGNER AWARDS by EXTERIOR EXTERIOR DESIGN : ZERO WASTE / ZERO CRASH Car industry is probably the most innovative industry in terms of technology, features and manufacturing processes. Automobile industry from the early years faced cost issues motivated by increasing production volumes and consequently sale volumes. American car maker Ford was pioneer in the 1920’s in standardized mass production cars but all other major manufacturers followed the same path driven by cost reduction. Even the slightest detail, insignificant on a single car represents a lot when duplicated in millions. Technology has historically been driven by engineering team but designers are nowadays more and more directly linked with innovation and new technologies. Environmental regulations impact industry at all levels from manufacturing to destruction and recycling. What if we all started over from scratch? Your work will be based on designing an innovative, modern and elegant car body focused on cost reduction (materials, manufacturing process, etc.). You must think global: design / manufacturing / usages / recycling -Imagine car bodies designed as kits (similar to an Ikea piece of furniture) -Image a car body kept bare (without any finish, paint or clear coat) -Image a car body with symmetrical panels (Front/Rear – Right-Left) -Imagine for instance a door panel with all components integrated in a single mold We expect in this project much more than just a basic styling exercise. We wish to see totally new design and manufacturing processes which would of course not exclude elegance, originality, tasteful and environment friendly. May “ECO” be source of creativity, innovation and not only imposed by legal constraints… Registration on : www.yda.festivalautomobile.com
SUBJET 2 YOUNG DESIGNER AWARDS by INTERIOR INTERIOR DESIGN : EXALTED WITH TIME Product quality and durability have always represented major issues for the automobile industry right from very early years. Some car manufacturers built their reputation up over time thanks to quality and durability of their cars. Technology through time has tremendously helped improving quality. Customers are nowadays very demanding on constant quality of their product or car (functioning and esthetical aspect) throughout their entire life. For example, one would have totally accepted back in time that leather would gain patina with time…it actually was even a positive aspect! Users demand high constant quality and manufacturers work on quickly renewing their model which makes previous generation right away obsolete (planned obsolescence). This represents a real paradox… How could a vehicle interior worn from usual everyday usage could be enhanced with time? How could car makers use local material accordingly to location of users? Imagine, design a vehicle interior which would be exalted with time. It will be necessary in this project to go beyond the simple ware of materials and show ideas in which users would take new opportunities from this wear and tear to imagine new usages. Wear and tear of natural fabric or material but also chemical reaction on metal (corrosion) could be taken into account in this project. We expect in the topic fresh creativity and at the same time ideas on complete interior layouts and user’s experiences highlighted through scenarios and story boards showing time passing.
