House System Thornlie SHS has 4 Houses • Curtin - Green • Forrest - Red • Hannan - Yellow • O’Connor – Blue Students win points that go towards rewards for individual and House. Points for positive behaviours both in and out of class.

School Uniform All students are required to adhere to the Department of Education and Training’s “Dress Requirements for Students in WA Public Schools 2006”. Homework and Study Homework and study is an integral part of student life. The purpose of doing homework and study is to practice what has been learned at school and to shift this information into long term memory. What is Homework? • Homework is not just set work or assignments given by classroom teachers. Homework can also be taking time to review and learn class work, organize files, complete tasks begun in class, read, learn new work or prepare and complete assignments. Recommended amount of study • Year 7 - 1 hour, 5 nights per week A homework/study area is extremely important

Orientation Day 2020 The purpose of this day is to: • familiarise students with the physical layout of the school • meet with key school staff • provide an opportunity to participate in a regular classroom program • meet students from other schools • increase confidence and address any issues students may have • have fun
Orientation Day Program 8:50am Students arrive at TSHS and assemble on the front lawn 9:00 – 9:50 am Welcome Meet TSHS staff and student guides for the day Tour of school in groups 9:50 – 10:50am Sample lessons from different Learning Areas 10:50 – 11:20am Recess on front lawn. Students may bring their own morning tea or access the school canteen 11:20 – 11:35 Front Lawn 11:35 – 12:35pm Sample lessons from different Learning Areas 12:35 – 1:35pm Sample lessons from different Learning Areas 1:35 – 2:05pm Lunch – on front lawn. Sausage sizzle & drink $3.00 2:05 – 3:00pm Performing Arts Centre for a presentation by our students. Final address and other arrangements 3:00pm All students will be dismissed from the front lawn. All students will need to be wearing their normal Primary School uniform and bring something to write with.
YEAR 7 TRANSITION DAYS • Co-ordinated by the Year 7 Coordinator and teaching team, as well as Student Services members • 3 days held during Week 1 Term 1 • Program focuses on: – Social Skills – meeting and keeping new friends – Familiarising students with school processes and procedures – Self Esteem – Teaching Responsibility, Respect, Pride and Perseverance – Countering Bullying – Fun, games and prizes • Year 12 Student Leaders assist with transition days and run an ongoing RAW program for Year 7 students throughout the year

ICT Specialised Class 2021
ICT Specialised Class • An ICT Specialised Class will be established in Year 7 at Thornlie Senior High School in 2021 for MESH and Digital Tech & Health • This group will continue in Year 8 2022 for MESH and Digital Tech & Health • It is envisaged that students will follow a STEM, Media, Digital Technology, Design & Technologies and/or Enterprise pathway in their course selections in Year 9 & 10
ICT Specialised Pathways
• Potential students need to apply to be accepted and must enrol in the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programme • There will be limited scholarships available so that financial disadvantage does not exclude participation • The ICT Specialised Class will be made up from students who complete an application process in Year 6 and who achieve a C grade average • The Information and Communication Technology General Capability of The Australian Curriculum will underpin all curriculum planning in MESH, allowing for cross-curricular connections
What computing device? • Students are invited to select their own device including those already used in the home setting. We recognise that cost for families play a significant factor in the implementation of this program and stress that the school does not intend to have families purchase expensive equipment for at school use. Approved devices include: • Laptops running Windows 10 or higher • Macbooks running OXS 10.13 High Siera or higher Minimum Device specifications are: • Capacity to connect to the Thornlie SHS Wi-FI • Screen size – no smaller than 10-inch screen size is recommended. Devices with a screen size less than 10 inches are considered inappropriate as it causes eye strain over time. • Battery life of 6-10 hours. Lightweight for portability What software will be needed on my child’s computer? • Office 365 is available free online from the DET Portal. • Virus protection software.

Rationale • A laptop environment allows for a flipped classroom approach, gamification and flexible learning options for learning anywhere anytime. • These classes enhance engagement and enthusiasm among students, improves teacher-student relationships and promotes 21st-century skills such as digital literacy, problem solving and a STEM futures focus.
Some of the benefits of using laptops in the classroom include: • Fostering online collaboration with other students • Providing curriculum support and additional strategies to attend to gaps in student learning • Allowing students to complete assignments online and submit their work via Learning Management System –Compass and Connect • Promoting better organisation to help students keep track of their learning using Office 365
