Year 6 into 7 Passport to Success - Castleford Academy
Dear Parent/Carer,
We look forward to welcoming your child when they start their secondary schooling with us. We are
disappointed that the transition day cannot run as planned this year however we have planned an
extensive virtual and remote programme to support the move to secondary school. Part of this is the
introduction of educational support we offer during the summer transition. We would therefore like to
take this opportunity to introduce some of our home learning programs used at the academy to support
your child prior to them starting their journey with us in the new academic year. Please also take some
time to read the KS3 Parent Information Booklet to see how the support packages work within our
curriculum.

Lexia and MathsWatch
At the academy, we use a range of on-line support packages to set home learning tasks for your child. We
introduce the English and maths support packages in the summer term of Year 6 to ensure your child can
familiarise themselves with the software and also for them to complete some of the tasks online before
starting with us in September. Instructions for accessing both of these programs are included with this
letter along with logon and password details. For further support with Lexia and MathsWatch, please visit
our website for a step-by-step guide for accessing and using both packages along with the number of units
we would like them to complete before September.

Enrichment Passport
In addition, we understand that the summer holidays should be enjoyed with family and friends and this
year, more than ever, is a time to appreciate this. Therefore, we have also included an enrichment
passport for your child to add details of other activities they have enjoyed over the holidays. When your
child joins us in September, they can hand their completed passport to their form tutor and they will
receive 5 epraise points as a reward for their efforts.

English Challenge
In September, your child will study Oliver Twist as part of their English curriculum. If you would like an
additional challenge to complete over the summer holidays, please take a look at the 100 points challenge
included in this pack and return any completed work to your English teacher in September or email to
shanby@castlefordacademy.com. Epraise points will be awarded for your efforts!

May I take this opportunity to thank you for your patience during this difficult time. We are thoroughly
looking forward to meeting you when school reopens to year 7 and working with you in the forthcoming
years.

Yours faithfully

LEXIA Information

Lexia Power Up™ is an exciting and fun software program that provides individualised, targeted practice
pupils need to master their reading skills! Our school has implemented the Lexia Power Up program to
support our core curriculum in reading. Your son or daughter will be following this program.

Here’s how this award-winning, computer-based reading program works:

Your son/daughter will need to access the Lexia Power Up program during the Summer holidays. Pupils
work through the 3 strands (Word Study, Grammar and Comprehension) taking around 20 minutes per
strand and are then placed by the Lexia program at their level of attainment – Foundation, Intermediate
or Advanced level.
Lexia can be accessed through the Castleford Academy website and clicking the Lexia link:
www.castlefordfordacademy.com/parents/literacy/lexia and entering their username and password. If
the program asks for “School or Home” select School. The school’s customer code is
2060_1460_7390_8828. They may also be asked for their teacher’s email and should use
gvessey@castlefordacademy.com

Lexia Power Up focuses on critical reading skills that have been identified by reading experts. Various
levels of activities provide extensive practice in everything from extremely basic to advanced level
reading skills (ages 4 – adult). As your son or daughter systematically progresses through the software,
he or she will gain a sense of achievement, confidence and independence and be awarded certificates
for completing each level.
We do expect pupils to complete 20 units of Lexia per week as a minimum requirement. This ensures
that they complete the entire programme by the end of the academic year and feel more confident in
their reading skills.

Usage Tips:

    a) Lexia adapts according to the individual needs of your child and we strongly advise you do not
help them through the program. It is best to let your child work on Lexia independently.
    b) Children perform best when they are not tired. Schedule Lexia as a routine for early evenings
       and on the weekend.
    c) Make sure Lexia is used in a quiet room (headphones are a good idea).

Lexia Power Up has helped thousands of pupils across the UK to develop fundamental reading
skills, in a fun and dynamic way. Our school is making the commitment to make this a part of
your child’s reading curriculum – please share in our excitement!

Your child will find their Lexia log in on the front of this Transition pack.

Please encourage your child to read and enjoy participating in your son or daughter’s reading
growth and success!
