Year 5 and 6 Weekly Topic Mat Our Stories and Celebrations from Around the World topics are Shrove Tuesday and Chinese New Year. How are different events from around the world celebrated? Vocabulary Shrove A Christian festival celebrated the day before the start of Lent. Tuesday Lent A period of reflecting and preparing which lead up to Easter. Fasting Not eating or drinking. Sacrifice Giving something up for something more important. Celebration An enjoyable activity or social gathering held to acknowledge an important day or event. 5 Finger Facts Shrove Tuesday is a Christian festival which falls on the Tuesday before the beginning of Lent. The date of Shrove Tuesday changes each year but is always 47 days before Easter Sunday. Shrove Tuesday is sometimes named ‘Pancake Day’ because it was the last day to eat rich, tasty foods before giving them up for Lent. Lent is a period of 40 days (not including Sundays) where Christians reflect and prepare for the celebration of Easter. Chinese New Year is the main Chinese festival and marks the start of the New Year according to the lunar calendar. Each day watch the video clip (the link is provided at the top of each page) and complete the challenges. If you need to, you can re-watch the video clip as many times as you like to help you! Then, you also have some challenges assigned to you on Classroom Secrets Kids which will test your knowledge. Your login details have been sent on Marvellous Me. Remember to keep your presentation neat and tidy! The answers to your maths questions are on the website, so you can even mark your answers to see how well you are doing! Year 6 Writing Overview! This week you are going to be writing a letter which describes your experiences of Chinese New Year. In your Literacy learning pack this week, you will be able to find out lots about Chinese New Year! Monday – SPAG focus for the week – Cohesive devices You will be learning that cohesive devices are used to make sure that paragraphs link together. Repetition of words and phrases can be used, as well as adverbials. 4
Tuesday – Gathering Content Find out all about Chinese New Year and how it is celebrated. Wednesday – Success Criteria Read through the letter example. Can you highlight the key features? Thursday – Plan your letter Having gathered content about Chinese New Year, you now need to plan your letter. Make sure you think about which cohesive devices you are going to use. Friday – Drafting your letter It is time for you to write your letter. Complete your task on Purple Mash and don’t forget to include cohesive decides. In the table, record how Shrove Tuesday and Chinese New Year are similar and how they are different. To help you, reflect on the learning you have done so far this week, and re-visit any of the videos or powerpoint slides you need to. 12- 1 pm Take a break have some lunch 1-2pm Friday Topic- I can create a Chinese paper lantern The 15th and final day of the Chinese New Year celebrations is called the Lantern Festival. Traditionally, families hung lanterns around their houses and children walked to the temple carrying paper lanterns. For today’s challenge, you will be creating your own paper lantern. Try to make yours as colourful as you can. Don’t forget to send photos of your amazing lantern into school so we can celebrate your amazing creativity! How to make a paper lantern 1. Cut off one end of the paper. Set aside to use as the handle. 2. Decoate the sheet using coloured pens, paint or glitter. 3. Fold your paper in half lengthwise along the dashed line. 4. Cut the marked lines along the sheet. (Do not cut to the edge of the paper). 5. Unfold the paper. 6. Match the long edges together on the lantern and use tape to hold it in place. 7. Staple the handle to the top of the lantern. 24
