Exam Preparation and Support Booklet To further support your son/daughter during their GCSE courses and to ensure they achieve their very best, we have produced this ‘GCSE Information’ booklet that explains how you can help your child. The Spires College will provide our Year 10 students all the help and opportunities possible to ensure they can achieve their full potential in the summer 2022 examinations, enabling them to move on to an appropriate Sixth Form programme that will, in turn, lead them to a rich and fulfilling future career. Mr D Veale Head of Year 10 2
Attendance Most people would be delighted with 90% in an exam. However, when it comes to attendance, this means your child would miss one out of every 10 days of college. Over a whole year, this equates to a month off college. This will obviously affect their GCSE final grades. Research suggests that missing one day out of 10, on average, can lead to a whole GCSE grade drop at the end of the course. Even small drops in attendance will have a negative effect on GCSE grades, as this graph shows: It is important students do not miss college for routine doctor or dentist appointments. All GPs and dentists offer appointments until at least 5pm and often later. Given that the college day finishes at 2:50pm, it should be possible to schedule appointments after the college day, as every lesson missed is important. Please do your utmost to get your child into college every day. The impact at the end of the year will be significant. 3
