             CXKJR/CCMGC participants started from the
Aldergrove Village Mall and had a fairly quick
transit across the border. They re-assembled at

             – known for its ice cream. A group of American
classic car enthusiasts were doing the same thing!

A historic and scenic highway, the 20-mile
Chuckanut was originally built in 1896. Sometimes
referred to as Washington’s Big Sur, the route hugs
the sheer cliffs of the Chuckanut Mountains, the
only place where the Cascade Mountains meet the
sea. The route overlooks Samish Bay and provides
stunning views of the San Juan Islands.

MG collection in Bellingham and others went

                     CHARCOAL CANISTERS?
                                                                Bob Sherman

                         or years I, like
                         many others, just
                         tossed the charcoal
              canisters from my various
MGBs as part of the “detox”
              procedure. These are also
              fitted to many British cars,
even the Jaguars. So are they
like the air pumps, gulp valves,
and the like, items that only
              harm performance?

              In rebuilding a 1975 MGB, I
forced myself to look into this
              matter. I have learned that
              leaving the charcoal canister
system intact does no harm at
all. It may even eliminate the
smell of petrol in your car! It is
              all about understanding what
the system does. viewer how to clean up the charcoal by heating it with

the rebuilt canister. On our other MGB, I used John’s
fitted with the charcoal canister, the vapors are routed
“Torch Method” and reused the old charcoal. It seemed
to the engine’s intake system and harmlessly burned.
                                                                           to work as well.
If you have disconnected the system, whether at the
vapor separator in the boot, or at the (perhaps former) John also notes that since formed hoses are not

vapors will “out” in one of these places. Thus your car replacement hose that goes from the canister to the

Better to keep these systems in operation. Now then,
fashioned screen doors. Insert as much of this as you
after around fifty years or so of benign neglect, do
can into the hose end that attaches to the canister.
these charcoal canisters function well? Most likely they
Realize that the tighter the fit, the harder the spring will

charcoal has, over time, become clogged as well.

If you look up a video done by John Twist, of MG fame, (I am serious, this makes surfaces really slippery and,
you’ll see how to rebuild one of these canisters. It isn’t being water based, eventually dries up and goes away).
hard, but one must use care with the plastic. I’ll not Otherwise you will never get it to go in. This will keep

The hoses that can be used are ½″
ID for canister to valve cover, 5/6″
ID, from the fuel tank vapor line to
canister, and with a “Y” fitting, from
carburetors to canister. If you are not
going to use the anti-run-on valve,
simply fit the proper size hose to the
port at the bottom of the canister. This
should be routed to carry any massive
          petrol overflow that has saturated
the charcoal canister down to the
ground below where the canister is
fitted. However, this eventuality is very
          unlikely to occur.

As much as I respect John Twist, there
is another factor. He generally deals !
with “stock” MGB topics. Supposing canister centre orifice, I used 3/4″ pieces from two
that you have an aftermarket aluminum rocker hoses installed on the centre outlet on the canister.

hose? Many of us have installed these if for no other KY Jelly) and allow the hose to be fitted with a clamp.
reason than to have a good seal and eliminate oil There must be no air leaks in this connection. Thus,
leaks from a distorted stock cover. The stock rocker I have duplicated the factory specification with an
arm cover factory-sized orifice is 9/64″. Some think aftermarket rocker arm cover.
they solve this by drilling and tapping the cover and
attaching a hose. Well, first off the tapped hole, being Before starting on the other MGB, I was at a threaded

to wobble about. Maybe “JB Weld” can cure this, but some very strong adhesives resistant to moderate

large hole defeats the purpose of the system. I thus of this clear adhesive to secure the aluminum flange

I purchased parts from Aircraft Spruce. The one
