Bill Rauld, District 9 President • wrauld@bellsouth.net It is with great pleasure and honor that I write my first message as President of District 9. I would like to first thank all the District Board of Directors members who gave me their unanimous support and I will do the best job that I can. I would also like to thank Jeff Overby for doing an outstanding job as President for the past 4 years. He will be a hard act to follow. It is also with great pleasure that I welcome Betty Sandifer as our new Vice-President, and I am also very pleased that Shirley Seals was re-elected as our Secretary/Treasurer. With their support and yours, I am sure we will continue to serve District 9. I would also like to congratulate Unit 240 on an excellent job in hosting the Orlando Regional. As usual, they did not disappoint. By the time you read this the Sandestin Regional will have been ably run by Unit 219 and the Sarasota-Manatee Regional, run this year by Unit 128, will also be concluded. Thank you all for a job well done. As far as upcoming events, the Southeasterns Regional will be held this year at the Hilton Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale April 4-10 followed by the Palm Beach Gardens Regional at the PGA May 30-June 5. I hope to see you there and meet many of you in person. Also of special note, the GNT Finals will be held at The Bridge Place in Lake Park. See the flyer in this issue. Please support all of our Regionals and the GNT Finals and Special Sectional, April 29-May 1. As a district, we are very lucky to have as many Regional tournaments as we do. NO other District has anywhere close to this number. Also, since our District membership has been constantly growing, we have been awarded an ADDITIONAL regional, to be held starting in 2012. The District is still looking for a location to have this tournament. I will keep you informed as to where and when it will be held. Again, thank you for your support and may all your finesses always work!!! Bill Rauld 10 ACBL District 9

Shirley Seals, District 9 Director • ShirleySealsFL@aol.com I have just returned from the Sandestin Regional held every other year in the far west corner of the Florida Panhandle. The Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort is a beautiful facility located on the bay, surrounded by several golf courses. Virginia Waterfield was the Tournament Chair, assisted by Cynthia Hall. Both have been involved in the Sandestin Regional for many years and ran the tournament with pleasant efficiency. Also, thanks go to Barbara Stone and Gayle Marr who spent many hours arranging Partnerships. A Special game was held at the tournament for the Youth bridge player (19 years and under). When you say Youth/Junior Bridge in Florida, you are referring to Carla Burke. Carla has taken the lead to promote bridge to our young players by writing requests for grants and arranging Youth competition. Carla is also in the process of writing an advertisement which asks for donations to Youth/Junior programs. District 9 has gone over the 18,000 average members each month and is now entitled to another Regional Tournament in 2012. This will allow us to hold nine (9) Regionals each year. Plans are being made by the District 9 board to decide on a suitable location for our new Regional. I love going to tournaments to play bridge, see old friends, and make new ones. I hope to see many of you in the next few months as we go to the Sarasota/Manatee Regional in February and the Southeastern Regional at the Hilton Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale in April. 12 ACBL District 9

NOTICE FROM THE ACBL HANDBOOK OF RULES AND REGULATIONS When a sectional (excluding STaCs) or higher rated event is being conducted within 25 miles of a club game’s playing site, the club is permitted to hold only its regularly scheduled club masterpoint games (i.e., no special games). Letter to the Editor Dear Muriel: Did you notice the SBN had two ten card suits in the January/February issue of SBN (Pages 19 and 30)? A reader asked me how likely are you to pick up a ten card suit. The actual chances are once every 61,000 hands. That may seem extraordinarily rare, but if you play twice a week, averaging over 2500 hands a year, for a 25 year bridge career, your expectation is to hold about one such hand. It is rare on any one hand, but not rare in a lifetime of play.
