Age group: • Upper Elementary • Middle School Getting Started Power up the Wii Fit station by turning on the monitor (bottom button on the right side of the TV) and the Wii console. The power on the Wii system will turn on and the screen will display a prompt for you to activate your remote. After you have read it, press ‘A’ Point to the Disc Channel (top left on the Wii Menu) and press ‘A’. The Channel Preview page will appear, when you are ready to begin, point to Start and press ‘A’. The Strap Usage screen will be displayed, once you are ready, press ‘A’. Use the ‘A’ button for all further selections you require in Wii Fit. Sheehan, D.P. – Mount Royal University, 2009
The Wii Fit Plaza allows a player to select their established character or choose the trial mode which allows a player to do a Body Test and/or select from a limited set of activities and exercises without having to create a profile. Unless otherwise indicated, students will only use the trial mode since there is a limit of eight Mii characters per console. Lesson 1 – Body Testing (follow the directions to begin activity) • As indicated above, select the Trial Mode • Choose a Guest Mii to play (your choice) • OK • Choose Body Test • Enter your height in Ft and Inches • Enter the year you were born • Enter your birthday (month/day) • Confirm height and birthdate Body Test using the Wii Balance Board • Place the balance board gently on the floor immediately in front of the monitor (approximately 2 meters away) • Softly use your finger to activate the power on the balance board and wait until you’re instructed to stand on it • Once it’s ready, stand on the balance board and let it recognize your body. Hold still while the Wii Fit unit adjusts its sensors to your body weight • Enter the weight of the clothes you are wearing: for consistency purposes, always choose blue (light – 2lbs) • Prepare to be weighed by standing still on the balance board and press ‘A’ when ready • Hold perfectly still while being measured for weight and centre of balance. Sheehan, D.P. – Mount Royal University, 2009
Centre of Balance (COB) and Body Mass Index (BMI) • Stand on the balance board with your feet spread equally apart and your body straight. Wii Fit will be checking the balance of your posture and your BMI. Once the measurement is complete, you will be able to see where your center of balance is located and what your BMI is. • Press ‘A’ to retrieve your COB and record the results in the boxes below LEFT RIGHT % % • After you have recorded your COB values in the boxes above, Press ‘A’ • Write the helpful tip to assist you in improving balance in the space provided • After you have copied your helpful balance tip, Press ‘A’ • Record your BMI in the box provided BMI • Read the helpful tips about BMI • Choose the green WEIGHT prompt • Record your weight in the box provided • Choose the green NEXT box lbs • Describe what you learned about your weight and BMI in the space provided below • After you have completed writing your thoughts about what you learned. Press ‘A’ to proceed to the body control balance tests Sheehan, D.P. – Mount Royal University, 2009
“BMI is a measurement typically used to assess fitness in adults, but Wii Fit was created so that players from ages 2-19 can get a BMI measurement as well. However, it’s important to understand that there are differences in growth rates, so this data is for information only. Please speak with your teacher if you would like to know more about your BMI. Body Control Balance Tests (indicate below which leg is your non-dominant leg) • Which leg can you kick a soccer ball the farthest and hardest? This leg is called your dominant leg. For this test you will be lifting your dominant leg and balancing on your non-dominant foot. Which foot will you be balancing on (left or right)? ____________ • Begin by selecting ‘A’ this is my non dominant leg • Single leg balance test ‘A’ • Place your non-dominant foot in the centre of the balance board ‘A’ • Slowly lift your opposite foot and press ‘A’ when ready to begin test • Complete the 30 second single leg standing balance test • Record your non-dominant leg stability in the box provided % left & right stability Wii Fit Age Your Wii Fit age will be calculated based on your balance-test results, taking into account your actual age. This imaginary age is a fun way for Nintendo to provide motivation for people to exercise so they can reduce their Wii Fit age. It has no scientific value and should not be taken seriously. • Press ‘A’ to see the fun Wii Fit age. Write down your Wii Fit age: _________ • Read the information on the Wii Fit age and press ‘A’ to move on Training This is a selection of 15 activities that you will try from the four categories of Strength Training, Aerobics, Yoga, and Balance Games. On any given day, you will be asked to try at least one activity from each category. Please follow the order of the activities and complete the task for that day. There may be left-over time for you to explore or return to your favorite games at the end of each lesson. For the remainder of lesson I (today) you can scroll through the different categories and check out some of the activities on your own Sheehan, D.P. – Mount Royal University, 2009
Lesson 2 – Top Row Training • Be sure that you are using the safety strap with the Wii remote. If you forget to use the strap you will be removed from the Wii Fit station. • Follow the directions from Lesson I to arrive at the Wii Plaza. Use the same method to choose Trial and then select a Guest Mii and press OK • Choose Training • You will see five columns of activities. In this lesson you will complete the top row from left to right. After you have completed all of the designated activities, you may have time to explore other activities or return to improve your score in any activity you have already completed • Begin by starting in the top left corner with the single leg extension Single Leg Extension • Write down the purpose of the single leg extension in the space provided below • Choose Demo to understand what is expected in the activity. If the balance board is not turned on yet, gently press the power button on the back • Wait until the balance board has started up, then step on when instructed to do so • Read the instructions provided to you and press ‘A’ • Follow the Wii Fit trainer through the demonstration of how to properly do a single leg extension • Once the demo is complete, press the Start button and try the single leg extensions by following your trainer • Write down your score for the left and right leg _____ +_____ = _____ Left Right Total Sheehan, D.P. – Mount Royal University, 2009
Ski Slalom • Objective: Ski down the mountain while navigating between the flag gates • Ski down the mountain slope and try to navigate through the flags for +1 point each. You'll gain additional points the faster you complete the challenge. Take a look at the Balance Board icon in the top-right corner; the blue bar along the top represents the 'speed zone' -- try to keep your center of balance in that zone to scoot down the mountain at top-speed • Tip: The flag gates always alternate between the left and right sides, so try to turn through each one so you're already facing the next! • Press and enjoy the activity. Write down your result, ________sec (the lower the number, the better!) Hula Hoop • Objective: The Hula Hoop activity requires you to swing your hips around in a circle to keep the hoops spinning around your Mii. You'll also need to lean over occasionally to catch additional hoops that other Miis throw at you. • The faster you swing your hips, the more spins you will accumulate. If you catch a hula hoop by leaning over while you are spinning you will be able to double the number of spins. The more hoops you catch, the more spins you can get!! • Keep those hips moving and don’t drop the hoop or you will be given the failure notice • Tip: Catching the hula-hoops can be tricky. Remember, it's based on weight, so even if you're leaning to the proper side, your Mii won't respond unless you place enough weight in the proper direction. • Tip: One of the best way to ensure you catch the hoops is to extend your arms straight above your head, then lean your entire body in the proper direction and hold still. • Press and enjoy the activity. Write down your result, ______spins (the higher the number, the better!) Sheehan, D.P. – Mount Royal University, 2009
Soccer Heading • Objective: Head the soccer balls, but avoid the cleats and pandas • Your teammates will take turns kicking soccer balls, cleats, or panda heads at you. You'll score a point if you head a soccer ball, but you'll lose a point if a cleat hits you, and three points if you get nailed by a Panda head • You'll have to shift your body weight left/right to lean your Mii in either direction. Keep in mind that you do not actually have to make a heading motion; your Mii will take care of that for you -- just focus on lining yourself up with the soccer balls (or dodging out of the way, in case of a cleat or panda head) • Tips: During the slow sections, try returning your Mii to the center so that you can quickly lean in either direction • Tip: If both a soccer ball and a cleat/panda are flying at you, sometimes it's better to avoid both altogether, instead of going for the ball and risk being hit by the panda • Press and enjoy the activity. Write down your result, _______pts (the higher the number, the better!) Half Moon (Yoga) • Write down the purpose of the half moon pose in the space provided below • Choose Demo to understand what is expected in the activity. If the balance board is not turned on yet, gently press the power button on the back • Wait until the balance board has started up, then step on when instructed to do so Sheehan, D.P. – Mount Royal University, 2009
• Read the instructions provided to you and press ‘A’ • Follow the Wii Fit trainer through the demonstration of how to properly do the half moon pose • Once the demo is complete, press the Start button and try the half moon pose by following your trainer • Write down your score for the left and right leg _____ +_____ = _____ Left Right Total Review and Explore Time • If you have completed all of the previous activities, you can return to any of those to improve your score or try out another activity of your choice. Sheehan, D.P. – Mount Royal University, 2009
Lesson 3 – Middle Row Training • Be sure that you are using the safety strap with the Wii remote. If you forget to use the strap you will be removed from the Wii Fit station. • Follow the directions from Lesson I to arrive at the Wii Plaza. Use the same method to choose Trial and then select a Guest Mii and press OK • Choose Training • You will see five columns of activities. In this lesson you will complete the middle row from left to right. After you have completed all of the designated activities, you may have time to explore other activities or return to improve your score in any activity you have already completed • Begin by starting in the middle row on the left end with the Torso Twist Torso Twist • Write down the purpose of the torso twist in the space provided below • Choose Demo to understand what is expected in the activity. If the balance board is not turned on yet, gently press the power button on the back • Wait until the balance board has started up, then step on when instructed to do so • Read the instructions provided to you and press ‘A’ • Follow the Wii Fit trainer through the demonstration of how to properly do a torso twist • Once the demo is complete, press the Start button and try the torso twist by following your trainer • Write down your center of balance for the torso twist _____ +_____ = _____ Horiz Vert Total • Tip: Notice how much wiggle you have in your horizontal and vertical center of balance? In this case, the higher number is better and indicates more core stability Sheehan, D.P. – Mount Royal University, 2009
Ski Jump • Objective: Glide down the ski jump tower and extend at the end • Crouch down and get ready to ski down the slope! As you slide down the ramp, keep your weight forward & center (in the blue circle zone) for maximum speed. The red zone at end of the slope is where you need to "jump" -- but don't actually jump on the Balance Board, instead stand straight up quickly and lean forward • You will get two jump opportunities in this activity • Tip: Crouch! Not only will this ease your ability to apply proper weight to the front of the board, but you have to crouch in order to "ski jump" at the end (by standing straight up quickly). • Tip: Don't actually jump! If you do, Wii Fit will quit the game right then and there • Press and enjoy the activity. Write down your results below: st 1 Jump _______m 2nd Jump _______m Total __________m (the higher the number, the better!) Basic Step (dance) • Objective: Step on and off the board in time to the rhythm • In step aerobics, you have to step on and off the balance board in time to what's shown onscreen. You'll get an "OK" for performing the move, but you'll obtain a "perfect" if you nail the timing! The better your performance, the more energetic the music becomes • Tip: Timing the moves perfectly can be tricky. The ideal time to step on and off the board is right as the list scrolls to the next move • Tip: The music is actually synced to your movements, so try using it as a guide to time your movements • Press and enjoy the activity. Write down your results below: Perfect Steps worth 2 pts _______times (high number is best) OK Steps worth 1 pt _______times Missed Steps worth 0 pts _______times (low number is best) Total _______pts (the higher the number, the better!) Sheehan, D.P. – Mount Royal University, 2009
Table Tilt • Objective: Tilt the board to roll the marbles into the holes • You control how the table tilts by adjusting your weight on the board. You'll have to carefully manipulate the board to roll the balls into the holes, without dropping a ball of the side. If you do accidently drop a ball, the board will spin around 180 degree (possibly messing up other balls on the table) and will then drop the fallen ball back onto the center • Tip: The edge of most of the boards is curved slightly, creating a lip that can hold a ball in place so long as you don't tilt the board too far. This is the key when rolling multiple balls -- try focusing on one at a time, tilting the board just enough to roll that ball toward the hole without causing the others to tip over the edge • The key to winning is to roll the balls slowly and gently -- because the lip will hold the marbles in, you can focus on just one at a time • Press and enjoy the activity. Write down your result, # of levels completed _______ or # of points if all levels completed _______pts (the higher the number, the better!) Warrior (yoga) • Write down the purpose of the Warrior pose in the space provided below • Choose Demo to understand what is expected in the activity. If the balance board is not turned on yet, gently press the power button on the back • Wait until the balance board has started up, then step on when instructed to do so • Read the instructions provided to you and press ‘A’ • Follow the Wii Fit trainer through the demonstration of how to properly do a warrior pose • Once the demo is complete, press the Start button and try the warrior pose by following your trainer • Write down your score for the left and right leg _____ +_____ = _____ Left Right Total Sheehan, D.P. – Mount Royal University, 2009
Lesson 4 – Bottom Row Training • Be sure that you are using the safety strap with the Wii remote. If you forget to use the strap you will be removed from the Wii Fit station. • Follow the directions from Lesson I to arrive at the Wii Plaza. Use the same method to choose Trial and then select a Guest Mii and press OK • Choose Training • You will see five columns of activities. In this lesson you will complete the bottom row from left to right. After you have completed all of the designated activities, you may have time to explore other activities or return to improve your score in any activity you have already completed • Begin by starting at the bottom left corner with the Lunge Lunge • Write down the purpose of the Lunge in the space provided below • Choose Demo to understand what is expected in the activity. If the balance board is not turned on yet, gently press the power button on the back • Wait until the balance board has started up, then step on when instructed to do so • Read the instructions provided to you and press ‘A’ • Follow the Wii Fit trainer through the demonstration of how to properly do the Lunge • Once the demo is complete, press the Start button and try the Lunge by following your trainer • Write down your score for the left and right leg _____ +_____ = _____ Left Right Total (the higher the number, the better!) Sheehan, D.P. – Mount Royal University, 2009
Tightrope Walk • Objective: Cross the tightrope without losing balance...but watch out for the trap • You don't actually have to walk in order to cross the tightrope. Instead, you merely have to alternate between shifting your weight from side to side in order to mimic walking (walking on the spot). Each time you do, your Mii should take a step forward, as long as you're balanced. Occasionally, an Iron Jaw will impede your path -- to jump over it, crouch down, and then stand up quickly (but don't actually jump!) • Tip: Wait until the iron jaw is right in front of you before jumping, otherwise you may land right on top of it • Tip: Don't jump unless you're totally centered on the rope, otherwise you'll leap to the side and fall off, failing the challenge • Press and enjoy the activity. Write down your result, _______yds (the higher the number, the better!) • If you completed the Tightrope Walk, write down your time, _______ Basic Run • Objective: Jog in place at a constant speed to keep pace with your trainer • This on-the-spot running activity has you jog in place as your Mii runs through various courses on the map (see appendix) • You do not use the Wii Fit Balance Board for this activity • The game has you place a Wii Remote in your pocket to count your steps instead of pounding away on the Wii Fit balance board • If you have two Wii Remotes, you can run with a friend in 2-P Run Mode • Tip: The Wii Remote is most accurate when placed vertically in your pocket. If your pocket's too large for a good grip, try holding onto it instead • Tip: The most important part of jogging is maintaining the same pace -- by doing so, you can actually exceed 100% • Tip: If you see a dog run past, try chasing after it by running really fast to find an alternate route • Press and enjoy the activity. When you are finished your run, write down your burn rate, _______% (the higher the number, the better!) Sheehan, D.P. – Mount Royal University, 2009
Balance Bubble • Objective: Maneuver the bubble through the course without touching the walls • In this task, you'll steer your Mii Bubble through a hazard-filled course by leaning around on the balance board -- the further you lean, the faster the bubble travels in that direction • Tip: Go right at the split-path, as it's significantly wider. • Tip: If you move fast, you can avoid confrontations with the bees! • Press and enjoy the activity. Write down your result, _______yds (the higher the number, the better!) • If you completed the Balance Bubble course, write down your time, _______ Tree pose (yoga) • Write down the purpose of the Tree pose in the space provided below • Choose Demo to understand what is expected in the activity. If the balance board is not turned on yet, gently press the power button on the back • Wait until the balance board has started up, then step on when instructed to do so • Read the instructions provided to you and press ‘A’ • Follow the Wii Fit trainer through the demonstration of how to properly do the Tree pose • Once the demo is complete, press the Start button and try the Tree pose by following your trainer • Write down your score for the left and right leg _____ +_____ = _____ (the higher the number, the better!) Left Right Total Sheehan, D.P. – Mount Royal University, 2009
