Director’s Desktop - Start a New Hobby This Winter! T he winter may be long, dark and cold, but you can fill your time with new bright and cheery hobbies! Your Crystal Lake Public Library has everything you need to learn a new craft and make something to impress your friends and family. ADULTS – The Fine Art of Paper Flowers by Tiffanie Turner will help you beat the winter blues by filling your home with beautiful spring flowers that will never wilt. Good Clean Fun by Nick Offerman is a how-to guide for all woodworkers, aspiring and experienced. For those ready to delve into the fiber arts, Charming Colorwork Socks by Charlotte Stone is a delightful collection of pat- terns to keep your toes cozy and cute. Prefer a more hands-on approach? Try one of our take-and-make kits, or register for Winter Glass Painting at 2 pm Thursday, Jan. 19. We’d also love to see you at our Crafter Dark Social Hour at 7 pm Wednesday, Feb. 1. TEENS – Crochet Amigurumi for Every Occasion by Justine Tiu will introduce you to crochet and soon you’ll be filling your room with adorable handmade stuffed animals called amigurumi! Want to learn how to write beautifully? Classic Calligraphy for Beginners by Younghae Chung is the place to start and soon you’ll be writing frame-worthy notes. Want to make something easy and have some- thing tasty? Try our Shrinky Dinks & Cocoa Drinks program at 6 pm Thursday, Jan. 12. For those looking to turn making into a career, our Intro to Trades: Tile Executive Director Becky Fyolek and and Mortar program at 1 pm Saturday, Jan. 21 will be a hands-on introduction to her daughter dressed in homemade how to cut and place tile. KIDS – If there are kids in the house, then there are very likely LEGOs® on the floor. Instead of stepping on them (OUCH!), try The LEGO® Ideas Book by Daniel Lipkowitz. It’s a fun way for kids of all ages to try building amazing new things. Stitch Camp by Nicole Blum and Catherine Newman is a collection of crafts for kids who are interested in learning how to sew, knit, crochet, felt, embroider or weave!
