Enriching, preserving, and supporting our community! VOLUME 134, ISSUE 3 WINTER 2019—2020 Our President’s Message Dear Fellow Members, It looks like the Des Moines Women’s Club has begun another wonderful year. We enjoyed the talents of Steve Berry on Opening Day. Additionally, we have enjoyed interesting and engaging speakers. Some of us took advantage of Lea DeLong’s docent tour of the Brunnier Gallery and we have enrolled seven new members into our ranks. Opportunities to be involved in Club fundraising have included the Nut Sale and Basket/Silent Auction. Thank you to all who donated their time and goods to make these a success. I am appreciative of all who have donated their time decorating Hoyt Sherman Place for the Holidays and helping with gift wrapping at the Barnes and Noble stores. The next few months will lead us to Hanukkah, and Christmas holidays as well as the coming of 2020. The Des Moines Women’s Club traditionally does not have a morning program in January, allowing for streets to be cleared of snow/ice if that occurs. For January mornings, I am delight- ed to have convinced Sherry Wilkinson to present a program on some aspect of the history surrounding Hoyt Sherman Place. She will also try to arrange a date to give those interested a tour around our Mansion. Watch your Email blasts for upcoming dates. Please be aware that this years’ application for scholarships is available online on our website. Spread the word to students, parents of students and grandparents of students about our out- standing history of awarding scholarships to high school and enrolled college students. We look forward to receiving unlimited applications. Deb Stonehocker is chairperson this year. If you would like to donate your time to this important committee, please don’t hesitate to let Deb know. Help is always welcome and appreciated. Let me wish you all the best of holiday seasons. You are each unique and special and are what makes the Club such a wonderful organization. Because I am getting to know you better indi- vidually, YOU are making my year as President fun, enjoyable and one I will always treasure. I look forward to 2020 and my remaining time as your President. Jean Shires DMWC President 2019-2020

My obsession is so ongoing, I haven’t reached my limit. -Judith Frank Thank you for sharing your collections! Parking The new parking spaces west of the Hoyt Sherman building will not be designated as handicapped parking. However, in consideration of our members who have mobility issues, we ask that on meeting days you Beans, Beans, Beans WANTED: A person of good character who likes meeting people, sharing ideas, traveling short distances, and enjoying the tranquility of a bowl of good soup. Person must be a member of the Des Moines Women’s Club. Please talk with Bev Watts or Nancy Thompson. Wondering what to do with all those beans you've bought from Women's Club? If you have an instant pot you can cook them in 30 minutes without needing to pre- soak them! Many instant pots actually have a pre-programmed "bean" button so all you have to do is add the dry beans, water, and whatever seasonings you like. Add the lid, push the button, and walk away. Try it out! You'll be eating healthier in less than an hour!
