2020 International Meeting WILD & WONDERFUL AFRICA: TANZANIA AND BEYOND MAIN SAFARI | FEBRUARY 29-MARCH 8, 2020 PRE-TRIP AND POST-TRIP EXTENSIONS AVAILABLE
Dear ABOTA Friends: Awesome, amazing and wonderfully wild were our reactions to our site visit to East Africa! The natural beauty of the people, landscape and animal life stimulated our senses beyond measure. We are excited to invite you to join us for the ABOTA 2020 International Meeting in Tanzania. The Pre-Trip Option begins with two days of relaxation and exploration at the brand-new Melia Arusha Resort in Arusha, a bustling, international city located at the base of volcanic, Mt. Meru and near Africa’s highest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro. We then continue with two-days of safari in the Tarangire National Park. This vast landscape is dotted with magnificent baobab trees and a wide variety of wildlife including its large elephant population. In Tarangire, you will have a choice of two award- winning and stunning properties, the Tarangire Treetops and the Sanctuary Swala. The Main Safari includes two days in Arusha and the crown jewels in the Northern Tanzania safari circuit, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park. For those not participating in the Pre-Trip, our journey also begins in Arusha. Because of its proximity to Kilimanjaro Airport and safari reserves, Arusha is a busy gateway for people from all corners of the world, embarking upon amazing and unique travel experiences. Its attractions include world-famous coffee farms, the Arusha Cultural Heritage Center, and the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal. Our home for these two days will be the newest luxury hotel, the Melia Arusha Resort, expected to open soon. Our next stop for two days will be the pre-historic natural wonder known as the Ngorongoro Crater, where you will have a choice between two different lodges—the legendary Ngorongoro Crater Lodge and the stunning Serena Safari Lodge. Ngorongoro Crater is the largest unflooded and unbroken caldera. It is lush with vegetation and home to thousands of unique and diverse wildlife, such as zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, elephants, lions, hyenas, rhinos and even flamingos. The ecosystem that developed in this eroded volcanic crater is absolutely remarkable! The group from The Pre-Trip will join us here. Our last stop on The Main Safari will be the Serengeti National Park, home to the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth—the great migration of wildebeests and zebras. Vast, rich grasslands and plenty of water sources attract herds of wildebeests and zebras and the predators that hunt them along with the almighty elephants. Game viewing is the major highlight of the Serengeti but the Four Seasons is a destination on its own with its beautiful accommodations and grounds, heavenly spa, and exquisite culinary experience. Our four-night stay will be truly memorable. Our Post-Trip Option is Zanzibar—the exotic and alluring island off the coast of the mainland in the breathtaking turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Boasting some of the most beautiful white-sand beaches in the world, Zanzibar is the perfect ending with three days of relaxation, history and culture. We spend the first day in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Stone Town. Zanzibar’s capital city has been described as an “exotic multicultural melting pot.” Whether enjoying historical architecture, or exploring the narrow winding streets, or simply savoring a delicious meal overlooking the dhow boats, Zanzibar is a must-see! We then travel to the north coast to experience three nights of beach and coastal cuisine at the luxurious and eco-friendly, Zuri Resort. Mountain Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is a Post-Trip Option but can also be a pre-trip option. Please contact Carrousel Travel for more details or for any custom travel arrangements. Splendid African sunsets and sundowners are awaiting us! We hope you will join us on this wild and wonderful journey through Tanzania and beyond. With warmest regards, Judy and Luther Battiste 2 | American Board of Trial Advocates

PRE-TRIP EXTENSION | FEBRUARY 27-MARCH 2, 2020 In Tarangire National Park, the wildlife only tells half the story. Great stands of epic thousand-year old baobab trees, an abundance of sun-blistered termite mounds, grassy savannah plains, spectacular sunsets, vast swamps and the meandering Tarangire River (cutting the park in two) are just as enthralling. Nowhere else in Tanzania will you find as many baobab trees as you will here. Known as the tree of life, the baobab can live upwards of 600 years and gets its striking and distinct shape from the fact that it can store nearly 300 gallons of water in its bloated trunk. One of Tarangire’s claims to fame is its large elephant population - certainly the largest in Tanzania. With its wide variety of habitats and food sources, the park is also popular with birds (over 550 species) and birdwatchers. Tarangire National Park | 5

Nicknamed the Geneva of Africa, Arusha is an international diplomatic hub and has hosted many high-level conferences. In 1994, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda was established in Arusha to investigate and prosecute individuals responsible for the genocide that took place during Rwanda’s civil war. Shanga (Swahili for bead) is a brand and social enterprise founded in Arusha in 2007. Handmade products such as scarves, glassware, jewelry, home goods and more are available for purchase and are all made by artisans with disabilities who would not otherwise be employed. A visit to Shanga can include a workshop tour to see artisans in action. Arusha Cultural Heritage Center is the place to buy distinct and good quality artwork that will remind you of your travels through Tanzania. MAIN SAFARI | MARCH 2-4, 2020 Encompassing three spectacular volcanic craters, the Olduvai Gorge, huge expanses of savannah, forest and bush land, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the flagship of Tanzania’s tourism industry. It is also the only place on earth where mankind and wild animals coexist in harmony. The jewel in Ngorongoro’s crown is a deep, volcanic crater, the largest unflooded and unbroken caldera in the world. Some maintain that before it erupted, it would have been higher than Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Today, long since having collapsed and eroded, it is an extensive highland area with the famous 1,968 foot deep Ngorongoro Crater as its focal point. Nearly three million years old, the ancient caldera shelters one of the most beautiful wildlife havens on earth. Endangered black rhino are protected within its rim, giant tusked elephants wander the forests, black-maned lions stalk the grasslands, and flamingos crowd the soda lakes. It’s hard to put this experience into words. A few that fit are: amazing, heart-stirring, hair-raising, astonishing...they all apply to the stunning ethereal blue-green vistas of the Ngorongoro Crater. But as wonderful as the views are from above, the real magic happens when you get down inside and drive among an unparalleled concentration of wildlife, including the highest density of both lions and overall predators in Africa. Put simply, this is one of Africa’s premier attractions and this world-renowned natural wonder is deservedly a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ngorongoro Crater | 9

MAIN SAFARI | MARCH 4-8, 2020 Few people forget their first encounter with Serengeti National Park. Perhaps it is the view from the summit of Naabi Hill at the park’s entrance, from where the Serengeti’s grasslands appear to stretch to the very ends of the earth. Or maybe it’s a coalition of male lions stalking across open plains, their manes catching the breeze. Or it may be the epic migration of animals in their millions, following the ancient rhythm of Africa’s seasons. Whatever it is, Serengeti National Park is one of the wildest places in the world and one of the greatest wildlife-watching destinations on earth. It’s here, on the vast plains of the Serengeti, that one of earth’s most impressive natural cycles has played out for eons as hundreds of thousands of hoofed animals, driven by primeval rhythms of survival, move constantly in search of fresh grasslands. The most famous, and numerous, are the wildebeest (of which there are some 1.5 million) and their annual migration is the Serengeti’s calling card. There are also resident wildebeest populations in the park and you’ll see these smaller but still impressive herds year-round. A few black rhinos in the Moru Kopjes area offer a chance for the Big Five, although they’re very rarely seen. The 5,700 square mile Serengeti National Park is also renowned for its predators, especially its lions. Hunting alongside the lions are cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, jackals and more. These predators feast on zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles, topis, elands, hartebeest, impalas, klipspringers, duikers and so many more. It’s an incredible birdwatching destination, too, with over 500 species. Serengeti National Park | 11

POST-TRIP EXTENSION | MARCH 8-11, 2020 Zanzibar. The name alone conjures up images of an exotic far-flung place. Only a 20-minute flight from mainland Tanzania but a world away with its sparkling, tranquil beaches, aromatic spice farms and diverse mash-up of cultures and architecture. A semi-autonomous territory of Tanzania with its own government, the island has been influenced by the Arabs, Persians, Indians, Portuguese, Chinese, British and African mainland for centuries. All of this is still very evident today in the language, religion and especially the food. Zanzibar | 13
Mountain Gorilla View Lodge or Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge RWANDA GORILLA TREKKING THREE NIGHTS ELEVATION: 4,800 ft In colonial times, the thrilling beauty of Rwanda’s rolling mountainous landscapes earned it the sobriquet “The Land of a Thousand Hills.” After independence, this small Central African nation leaped to fame as the Land of “Gorillas in the Mist,” adopted home of Dian Fossey and the most important refuge for the rare mountain gorilla. Mountain Gorilla View Lodge Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge (upgrade option) ›› Experience an eco-lodge set on the foothills of ›› Escape to a serene forest retreat set on the foothills the Virunga Mountains - a chain of volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains - a chain of volcanoes ›› Cozy up to the fireplace in one of the 30 ›› Take in the views of the volcanoes and cottages after a day of trekking in search of the surrounding countryside from one of the six elusive mountain gorillas cottages or two suites ›› Stroll through the lush, well-manicured ›› Hike into the Volcanoes National Park in search gardens right at the lodge of the majestic mountain gorilla, the enchanting golden monkeys and a variety of birds 14 | Rwanda Gorilla Trekking
POST-TRIP EXTENSION | MARCH 8-11, 2020 IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Trekking conditions differ greatly according to the location of the gorillas, so the exact level of difficulty for a specific trek is impossible to define in advance. On an excursion, it is entirely possible that you will find the gorillas quite quickly and be back at your hotel for lunch. It is also entirely possible that you will have to hike three or four hours (or sometimes even longer) each way and will make it back to your hotel just before dark. Because it is impossible to predict the length and difficulty of any single trekking excursion, this program should not be attempted by anyone who is not in very good physical condition. Because of the climbing and bending required as you make your way through the thick foliage, gorilla trekking should not be attempted by anyone who has any kind of heart or back problem. Only those who are absolutely 100% fit and are capable of walking long distances at high altitude over slippery, muddy terrain should attempt gorilla trekking. Trekking is likely to involve scrambling through, over, and under dense undergrowth with nettles, barbed vines, and bamboo thickets. Correct footwear and clothing are essential. It is recommended that you build up the strength and endurance of your leg muscles by walking, stair climbing, bicycling, knee bends, and similar exercises before you leave home. This should always be done under the supervision of your doctor. Travelers with physical disabilities and those who require frequent or ongoing medical attention should advise Carrousel Travel of their health situation at the time of booking. *If you are interested in doing both Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Zanzibar, please contact us for more details and options.
