VISITOR’S GUIDE - 2015 PARC NATIONAL DU MONT-SAINT-BRUNO The Parc national du Mont-Saint-Bruno boasts the largest attendance in the entire Parcs Québec network, welcoming almost 900,000 visitors annually. Surrounded by four municipalities and located close to Montreal, this park provides a veritable forest islet in the heart of a territory vastly and deeply transformed by urbanization and agriculture. A highly representative element of the natural region comprising the Monteregian Hills, the Parc national du Mont-Saint-Bruno encompasses, among other things, five lakes, an orchard, a historic mill, and dozens of kilometers in trails twisting and turning within the deciduous (broadleaved) forest. Each breath you take brings in a new scent, and every little bit of breeze carries with it this highly distinctive mix of aromas found only in the forest. Some 200 bird, 500 plant and about 30 mammal species share this little nook of paradise. NEW “NOVEL-TEAS” COME EXPERIENCE… THE OLD MILL TEA ROOM Enjoy our tea selection and revel in new flavours. Every season, check out the new teas showcased to beautifully blend with Mother Nature’s changing moods and colours, and take advantage of our outside terrace. As part of your visit, perhaps you will have a chance encounter with one of our mythical characters who will be roaming around in the fall; this could be your opportunity to meet and mingle with lords and other invented personages. Find out about our interpretive chat-hikes combined with a tea tasting session. The kinds of evenings you will not want to miss. All these activities, and a lot more, are offered during the year. Stay abreast of our programming on our Web site.

A TEN-YEAR ASSESSMENT OUR NATIONAL PARKS ARE IN GOOD HEALTH! The daily challenge for the managers who run a national park is to get the balance right between public access and conservation. To accomplish this, Parcs Québec developed a forward-thinking program in 2003 to implement ongoing health check-ups for its national parks – the ecological integrity monitoring program (EIMP). The results of the 370 monitorings carried out over the last 10 years are encouraging: the overall level of ecological integrity of the national parks has been maintained or improved throughout the network, despite an increasing public access. Full details at parcsquebec.com/ecologicalintegrity A Few Highlights of the Parc national du Mont-Saint-Bruno: The exceptional forest ecosystem evolution index has improved. The change measured by this indicator suggests a significant improvement of its state contributing to increasing the park’s ecological integrity level. The increase in stands’ and populations’ evolution indices may take root at the Great Ice Storm of early 1998, since the falling of several trees had a dynamic effect on the shrub stratum’s growth, which, in turn, favorably influenced the sugar maple-hickory stand’s evolution. The bats seem largely stricken by the white-nose syndrome (WNS) (a generalized trend in North America). The change measured by this indicator suggests a significant deterioration of their state contributing to lowering the park’s ecological integrity level. The decrease in bats’ biodiversity index may find explanation in the spreading white-nose syndrome, a fungus disease that has been decimating bat populations in eastern North America since 2006. The adverse effects of this disease can be observed everywhere in the affected regions.
