Laughter is wine for the soul. APRIL 2021 - ISSUE # 341 INSIDE WOLRA Well, here we are at the beginning of spring. Last year, at exactly this time, in the Neighbourly News I wrote “We are in the midst of a pandemic that is im- pacting our health, our lives, and the way we live them. We are fighting an enemy that is faceless, raceless, sexless, non-denominational and non-partisan – we will beat this enemy, together”. We haven’t beaten Covid-19 yet, but there is a big green light at the end of the tunnel. Many of our residents have received a vaccine, many more are scheduled soon, and the rest of us will follow in the not-too-distant future. We have done well in our Community and our Health Unit and we still must stay the course. Please remember that until most of us are vaccinated, it is still necessary to wear masks indoors, maintain social distance and proper hand hygiene. Let’s all stay healthy and safe. Speaking of the green light at the end of the tunnel, we have many activities and projects scheduled that will take place in the coming weeks and months. The WOLRA Board and the Community would like to thank the Membership for the recent Internet Vote on the issue of increased Membership Fees. I am pleased to report that you voted, with an 83% majority, to approve the increase from $15 per person to $20 per person, effective with the upcoming Membership Campaign (see page 12 & 13). We will continue to use your fees to provide more and expanded activities and community improvements in a fiscally responsible manner. And speaking of community improvements, as it turns to spring and the weather allows us, we will be working on many projects. We plan to complete the Park, using the balance of funds provided by Frontier. This will consist of cutting more pathways in the eastern half of the Park and finishing with crushed stone on all the pathways. In addition, there will be more trees planted and benches placed as well as a defined entrance to the Park off Dorchester. Memorial trees and benches, funded by residents, will also be installed (see page 11). And, the Park news doesn’t stop there. We want to thank Ann Mau, Denise Paquette- Frenette, and MaryLynn Stevens for all their work to secure a Federal Grant of $25,000 to place Senior Fitness equipment in the Park for everyone’s use. This has been a lot of work and if you see any of these folks around the community, give them a hearty thank you. Delivery, and installation is being determined as of this writing, but the fitness portion of the Park will be installed and ready for use in the late Spring or early Summer. Further beautification of the Rec Centre in the form of new stone planters in front, and more garden work around the building will begin in April (weather permitting) and complete in early summer. The Parkette will be completed as well with trees and gardens. We are receiving quotes and negotiating for the completion of the electricity in the Outdoor Living Centre. We need to power this facility to enable us to use it for all our needs – which means we have to be able to do just about anything that we can do inside the RC. This includes food and beverage, full lighting and audio-visual equipment. At this point, we have to thank Bea Howse and the WOTL Theatre Group for their generous donation of $5000 to the completion of the OLC, it’s furnishings and audio-visual equipment. Thank you folks, and we look forward to seeing the Theatre Group doing what they do best in the OLC as well as the RC. Continued next page... Wellington on the Lake Residents’ Association 4
Laughter is wine for the soul. APRIL 2021 - ISSUE # 341 We still have a number of issues outstanding but we are continuing to work on them. We are looking to upgrade the flooring in the Fitness Centre as well as replacing an aging machine. We also have the plans for the “Beautification” of the Empire Drive HUT to finalize. We are initiating a survey of Leasehold residents to get their support to encourage Daimler to complete the required paving of the Leasehold section of the Community (surveys and envelopes to return to RC were hand delivered by volunteers to each Leasehold home on March 25th). We are planning a “full court press” of Daimler ownership with survey results, resident comments, pictures of ponds on the roads and raised manholes, to “encourage” the required paving at the earliest possible date. Frontier also supports us on this initiative since it is Frontier’s job to maintain these roads, summer and winter, and that function is becoming very difficult to do. Finally, I would just like to remind everyone to attend our Activity Signup Day, scheduled for May 8 (rain date May 15), outside by the OLC, utilizing all Covid protocols (see page 10). It is our plan to have coffee and donuts provided by the WOLRA Board. So, please come out – learn about and sign up for all Activities; I hope to see you there. We have many projects on the way, and plans and Activities for the future, so please stay healthy, get your vaccine when you can and let’s enjoy our journey back to normalcy. Laughter is wine for the soul. APRIL 2021 - ISSUE # 341 AN UPDATE FROM YOUR NOMINATING COMMITTEE FOR 2021 With the arrival of April and the weather looking more and more like spring outside, I am pleased to announce that four people have come forward and submitted their candidacy for the next WOLRA Board term commencing July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022. Currently, there are four board members who have indicated they will be stepping down from the Board as of the end of June, 2021. As per our Bylaws and Policies, nominations will remain open until the close of the May 18th General Meeting. Please note that the date of this meeting was previously anticipated to be May 11th but has now been set for May 18th. The meeting may take place in the Rec Centre or it may need to be a virtual meeting this year, depending upon our facility’s status under Covid- 19 regulations at that time. If you are interested in submitting your name as a nominee, you still have time and are most welcome to do so. Just contact me and I will be happy to go over the process and details with you. At this time, we do also have a fifth person strongly interested in committing to their candidacy. Should more than four applications be received by the Nominating Committee, there would be an election in the month of June as the Board membership has a maximum of ten persons under our Nominating Policy. The names of the candidates will be posted to our website and announced in the May Neighbourly News and/or via eblast at least ten days prior to the May 18th General Meeting date. The signed candidates will be presented to you at the May meeting and the opportunity to nominate additional candidates provided prior to the close of the meeting. In June, each candidate will publish a brief biography including their background, interests and their reasons for wishing to become a Board member in the June Neighbourly News. The successful candidates will assume office with the Board at the beginning of July, 2021. At this time, I would like to thank many of our existing and past Board members for their assistance in locating candidates in our community and encouraging them to step forward. It has been a great help to the Nominating Committee, particularly under the unusual circumstances this year caused by Covid-19 restrictions on socializing. Laughter is wine for the soul. APRIL 2021 - ISSUE # 341 WELLINGTON ON THE LAKE SENIORS FITNESS PARK OUTDOOR FUN WE GOT IT! For those of you who don’t already know, our recent success in acquiring an NHSP grant is quite an achievement and is a testimony to our collective competence. Navigating the necessary steps requires effort, persistence and a bit of strategy to best align our application with the interpreted goals of the program. The team of Ann Mau, Denise Paquette-Frenette and MaryLynn Stevens came through for us by acquiring funding for a series of assets that we likely would not otherwise fund. More importantly they established WOTL as a serious contender in the "Grants Community". With this status, future grant applications should be easier to navigate and gain more favourable attention. Congratulations ladies, you have confirmed something we have long known; that WOTL contains a wealth of competent people with the education, experience and time to accomplish great things. You are an inspiration to us all and hopefully your example will stimulate others to try for the impossible! DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS My bad... Saint Patrick’s Day was of course on the 17th of March, as always. Unfortunately, my inner leprechaun put it on our March calendar as the 15th. Laughter is wine for the soul. APRIL 2021 - ISSUE # 341 W E L L I N G T O N O N T H E L A K E R E S I D E N T S’ A S S O C I A T I O N 2021-2022 ACTIVITY SIGNUP DAY SATURDAY MAY 8th, 9:30am - 11am RAIN DATE - SATURDAY MAY 15th As many of you are aware, we have over 45 different activities and groups that make up the many diverse and fun things to do in our community. See our website (http:// www.wolra.ca/), under the activities tab for a full list. This year the Board of Directors would like to ensure that all residents from the Wellington on the Lake community (WOLRA Members) have equal opportunity to sign up and participate in the various activities available (to become a WOLRA Member, see page 11). * UNFORTUNATELY, DUE TO COVID, WE WILL NOT BE ALLOWING PARTICIPATION FROM OUTSIDE OF WELLINGTON ON THE LAKE. EVERYONE MUST BE A RESIDENT AND A WOLRA MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING * To facilitate this objective, WOLRA is hosting ACTIVITY SIGNUP DAY on Saturday May 8th from 9:30am to 11am. Keeping COVID-19 safety awareness in mind, this will be held outside the REC Centre, on the east side, using the pool area, the outdoor living centre, tennis court area and the walkways, with many well separated tables. The coordinators of the various activity groups will staff the tables to chat about their groups and answer questions. Free coffee and tea (bring your own mug) and treats will be provided to keep up your strength while moving from table to table to sign up for your favourite activities. Those whose names are currently part of a group may be added by the group’s coordinator to that group for the coming season. This will allow for those not physically able to attend on signup day in particular. Due to the overwhelming interest in the Aquafit classes, there will be (as in other activities) a Spares List for each time slot to fully utilize the activity, 10 person maximum. If you cannot make your time slot for a particular day, you can refer to the Spares List, starting with the first resident on that List, and have your spot filled for that particular day. This will ensure that the pool is fully utilized every hour for this extremely popular activity, and permit all residents an opportunity to take part. So, on May8th come on out, catch up and enjoy the time with your friends and neighbours as we try to get back in the swing of things here in Wellington on the Lake! Laughter is wine for the soul. APRIL 2021 - ISSUE # 341 COMMUNITY CLEAN UP WEEK OF APRIL 19TH For several years a group of volunteers have participated in a Spring cleanup around our community to coincide with Earth Day on the 22nd. After the winter snow has melted we can see the odd bits of garbage that have blown around the area. Last year due to COVID this cleanup did not happen and again this year we cannot go out as a group. However, there is no reason why individuals cannot do their bit if they choose. During the week of April 19th if you are one of the many walkers in our community, then please consider taking out a garbage/shopping bag and picking up some of the trash that is lying around the common areas and along the trail. If you do participate then wear disposable gloves and follow the current health guidelines. The litter collected can be disposed of with your regular garbage. It doesn’t require much effort to keep the area where we live clean and tidy. He hopped around my house and lawn - was Gratitude attracts more things to this a place he used to know? appreciate. Our tree at the back is beloved by the birds, robins nest there, rear young every year. I think that this fellow is back here again, in this year when we all need some cheer! I can watch from my window these builders at work, fashioning a safe, sturdy nest. Then I thrill when the babies can peek out the top, later play in the grass with such zest. A woven twig chair on my lawn is the site for a nursery playground out front. Parents warily watching the young at their fun, taking turns with the forage and hunt. Photos are taken by a professional photographer over a few days’ time, by appointment, at the Rec Centre (normally...can it be done out- side maybe?). Residents have the option to buy finished, framed photos of various sizes for themselves or family. Laughter is wine for the soul. APRIL 2021 - ISSUE # 341 BILL C-7 (Medical Assistance In Dying) UPDATE On March 17th, Helen Long, CEO of Dying With Dignity Canada said: “It’s a momentous day for end-of-life rights in Canada. After months of parliamentary debate, Canada’s Senate has passed Bill C-7 by a vote of 60-25. Over the past year, tens of thousands of Canadians expressed support for the bill, and urged our country’s decision-makers to expand access to assisted dying. Their efforts paid off. We applaud the triumph of compassion and choice that this change brings Canadians. Though this bill is not perfect, it will give Canadians fairer access to their constitutional right to make informed end-of-life choices and ease the suffering of many who are currently denied a peaceful and dignified death under the law. We are overwhelmed with relief and gratitude on behalf of suffering Canadians who were denied access under the previous medical assistance in dying (MAID) legislation. These Canadians can now choose to exercise their constitutionally-protected right to a peaceful death. For those wondering what these changes mean: • Canadians no longer must have a reasonably foreseeable death in order to be eligible for medical assistance in dying; • There are now two sets of safeguards in place: One for those whose death is reasonably foreseeable, and one for those who death is not reasonably foreseeable; • Canadians who have been assessed and approved for medical assistance in dying, but risk losing capacity to consent prior to the MAID procedure, will be able to sign a waiver of final consent; During the two-year mental illness exclusion, the Government of Canada will hear from experts and develop safeguards and protocols for people who seek access to MAID, but whose sole un- derlying medical condition is a mental illness. Thank you to all of you who sent a letter to your MP and Senators, urging the passage of C-7. Dying With Dignity Canada thanks all parliamentarians who listened to the voices of Canadians, and passed this compassionate bill. Once the bill receives Royal Assent, Canadians without a reasonably foreseeable death will be eligible to apply for medical assistance in dying. We will provide an update once Royal Assent is granted.” To read everything you could want to know about this bill, including Resources, Current Status, Additional Reading and click here: https://www.dyingwithdignity.ca/bill_c7_resources? utm_campaign=031221_billc7update&utm_medium=email&utm_source=dwdcanada Or this website: justice.gc.ca Wellington on the Lake Residents’ Association 30

Here are some red flags to identify frauds and scams: • Request for gift cards or cryptocurrency • Urgent request for action or information • Request for banking information • Unsolicited attempts at selling products or services REMEMBER Legitimate agencies will never pressure you for information over the phone or demand money immediately. Knowledge is Power! Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre Editor’s Note: Other things to watch out for are email notices from “Canada Post” saying delivery was attempted but no one was home so click here to send $1.65 (or whatever amount) to set up a time for them to try again. Canada Post would never do that. If there is no one home they would put a notice on your door for you to pick up the item at the post office. It does look very real, right down to a tracking number they refer to which is almost the same as the one on the package you are waiting for. Almost. Another one is an email notice supposedly from Microsoft saying your account will be shut down unless you do whatever the instructions might be. Then escalating to threats such as “You have two more days to comply or…”, then “Your email is in the process of being shut down”. For me this has been going on for many months.
