The election may be over, but there is much we can still learn from the 2020 Presidential race. What are the challenges Black Americans face in voting? What does voter suppression look like? And what does it mean for our future to have the first woman, and first woman of color, in the second highest office in the land? Adrienne Parkmond, Esq. is the Chief Operating Officer of The Workplace in Bridgeport, a $25 million non-profit agency responsible for job training, business development and human services for youths and adults, including services for veterans, older workers, and at-risk populations. Adrienne is past President of the Board of the CT Women’s Education and Legal Fund and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance from Villanova University and a Juris Doc- tor from Quinnipiac University School of Law. Adrienne serves as President of the Waterbury Chapter of The Links Incorporated, one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of extraordinary women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of Afri- can Americans and other persons of African ancestry. She is also President of the New Haven Chapter of Pearls of Excellence, the charitable arm of Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, an international service organization dedicated to being “Supreme in Service to All Mankind.” Date: Friday, February 5. (57 min.) February 15: “NPR Radio Interview with Chef Marcus Samuelsson: The Rise: Black Cooks and the Soul of Ameri- can Food.” Driven by a desire to fight against bias, reclaim Black culinary traditions, and energize a new gen- eration of cooks, Marcus shares his own journey alongside 150 recipes in honor of dozens of top chefs, writ- ers, and activists—with stories exploring their creativity and influence. The Rise gathers together an unfor- gettable feast of food, culture, and history to highlight the diverse deliciousness of Black cooking today. (37 min.) A Westport Caring Calling Program The Department of Human Services and the WCSA is excited to announce a community program that con- nects caring volunteers with Westport seniors. "Hello, Neighbor" provides a warm community connection through weekly phone calls, encouraging fellowship, and combating loneliness. Phone calls are purely social and conversational. Get to know your neighbors! We are all in this together. Once paired, you can establish a mutually convenient time to chat with your volunteer partner. To sign up for calls, please click here to complete the request form or contact the WCSA at 203.341.5037 or via email at helloneighbor@westportct.gov for details. If you know of someone who would benefit from a friendly conversation, please let them know that many Westporters are ready to chat! Be Prepared for an Emergency The cold weather and snow storms are upon us. Now is a good time to make sure you are prepared in the event of an emergency. The Department of Homeland Security recommends every household have a disaster emergency kit. Being prepared means having your own food, water and other supplies to last for several days. A disaster supplies kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency. It is a good idea to have a list of printed phone numbers in a zip lock bag in your emergency kit. For more information on how to cre- ate a disaster emergency kit visit: https://www.ready.gov/ 12 Westport Center for Senior Activities, 21 Imperial Ave., Westport, CT. 06880 P: 203.341.5099 F: 203.341.1187
