Wellacre Co-Curricular Choices Autumn Term 2019 Each Wednesday, Wellacre’s school day extends to Period 6 (3pm-4pm). Each student will take part in a co-curricular activity. Unless otherwise stated, these will be mixed year group activities. By 3pm on Wednesday 10th July, students need to complete the online option form to select their choice (the link to the form will be emailed to them and put on Class Charts - they must be logged in to their Wellacre account to access). If they have trouble accessing the online form, see Mrs O'Neill in Room 23.
Activity Description Supports learning Teacher(s) in... History Squad Learn about the events of Peterloo and History Mr Gillan what life was like in Manchester in 1819. Then, create a project piece (artwork, film, book, play etc.) to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the event. Gapminder! (Fighting Find out remarkable facts and new Maths Mr Sharrock global ignorance perceptions of the world we live in through Geography through statistics) the study of fascinating statistics and infographics. See gapminder.org to find out more! Wizard of Oz - Cast The Wellacre annual Christmas show is Drama Mrs Tickle always a fantastic experience for budding Music Mrs Spencer actors and singers. Whether you are Miss Adams interested in a big part or a small part, sign up to be part of this year’s extravaganza. Specific parts to be allocated through auditions. Current Year 7 - 10. Wizard of Oz - For any new Year 7’s wishing to be part of Drama Mrs O’Neill Munchkins! the school show, they will be cast as the Music ‘Munchkins’ and will prepare for this role through their Wednesday P6 sessions up to December. Some other after school rehearsal and commitment to perform in the production will be required. Current Year 6 students only. Keyboard skills An opportunity for budding musicians Music Mrs Hill (beginner and intermediate) to learn the basics of how to play the keyboard, or practise skills further. Orchestra Bespoke support for experienced Music Mr Lovatt (new musicians who wish to develop skills Science teacher) further (not guitar or keyboard). Eco Centre Work in the eco centre on various planting Science Mr Asha and horticultural projects, including looking Geography after the Wellacre chickens and plant care. Wellacre Wildlife Discover what wildlife is living in your local Science Mrs Eagling Warriors area. Follow their movements and watch their activities. Help to improve their habitats and learn more about native species. Architecture Design Students will work on a challenge relating Design Technology Mr Carter Challenge to architectural design. They will be working towards a CREST award. CREST Awards are challenging and thought provoking real-world STEM projects for young people of all ages. They inspire young people to think and behave like scientists and engineers. Current Year 6 – 8. Boxing Skills Learn basic boxing skills with our external Sport Outside Provider and provider. Suitable for beginners. Current Mr Magdzinski (new Year 8 to 9 only. teacher) Beginners’ Spanish Discover the culture, tastes and language MFL Miss Bailey of Spain! This may be to supplement your Food MFL skills, you want to try new things, or to prepare for a sunny holiday abroad! Current Y6 to Y8 only. Wellacre CCF Be part of something that will allow you to Mr Wise (Cadets) gain skills you may never have the chance Mr Duffy of getting elsewhere. Learn about how the Mr Baker armed services work, engage in team building and leadership tasks. This is a long-term commitment to P6 and you will be signing up to a 2 - 3 year course where you will come out with nationally recognised qualifications like powerboat and sailing licenses. We will be going on camps, water activities and many other things. ALL CURRENT MEMBERS OF CADETS WILL CONTINUE FOR AUTUMN P6. NEW APPLICANTS WELCOME. Current Year 8 and Year 9 ONLY. Wellacre Marvels! Budding artists and storytellers combine forces. Art Miss Flowers Study the history and format of Marvel style English comic-strip, before creating our own Wellacre comic. Masterchef! Understand your ingredients, and improve your Food Miss Jones practical cookery skills. Each week, a different cooking skill/dish will be the focus - who will be the next Masterchef? Current Year 8 only. Wood and Metal Create pieces of woodwork from wooden Technology Mr Seggie Craft pallets and reusable metals. Learn and perfect the making and manufacturing skills needed. Scrap Shop Using materials that are not being used Technology Mrs Doolan

Book Club Emphasis on reading for pleasure - book English Miss Warren discussions, book-themed events and book-themed activities. Based in the library. Year 11 Maths Covering a range of topics and revision Maths Mr Shiner Examination techniques to help you prepare for your Preparation GCSE Maths exams. Current Year 10 only. Year 11 English Covering a range of topics, revision English Mr Chisnall Examination techniques and metacognitive strategies to Preparation help you prepare for your GCSE English exams. Current Year 10 only. Cryptography Learn and refine advanced code-breaking Maths Mrs Tobiasen skills to prepare for participation in the Alan Turing Cryptography Competition in Spring Term (in association with the University of Manchester). Dance Do you enjoy football, rugby, basketball Sport External instructor and want to improve your footwork skills? Music Or do you enjoy performing arts and want Drama to improve your self-confidence? Then join our dance sessions and enhance your co- ordination and agility or your performance skills in a fun and fit way. Meditation and Using mindfulness and movement Wellbeing Miss Larner relaxation techniques to develop self-regulation and Mrs Barnes awareness. This uses a different type of media each week such as: breathing exercises, guided group discussions, guided video meditation, and a project piece. School of Rock Enjoy (or would like to learn) guitar? Music Mr Casey Practise songs and riffs with a view to joining with other musicians and vocalists for performances later in the year. Board Game Playing lots of board games to work out the Maths Mrs Siddall Bonanza different skills involved and to produce your Design Technology own board game to enter the Brain Box Maths competition where your game will be made if you win. Science Calculation Afraid of calculations in Science? This is a Science Dr. Telchadder (new Club good opportunity to strengthen and give Maths Science teacher) confidence to the students in preparation for their exams. Current Year 9 and 10 only. Rugby Rugby is a territorial, full-contact, team Sport PE Staff game, inclusive of all shapes and sizes. If you are a newcomer to the sport, this programme will outline the basics of rugby from scoring to set pieces, so use it to increase your enjoyment when it comes to
watching the big games, or as a first step in your own playing career. Current Year 8 and 9 only. Dodgeball Dodgeball is a team sport in which players Sport PE Staff on two teams try to throw balls and hit opponents, while avoiding being hit themselves. Current Year 8 and 7 only. Digital Creators Working together in teams to design an Computing Mrs Lunn Challenge (App app to improve lives in your local Citizenship design) community. Current Year 6 to Year 8 only. Teen Mate (Project Working on a special project linking up with Citizenship Mr Pemberton and with De Brook Care our neighbouring care home and working other staff Home) to help improve the lives of the older generation who live there.
