Welcome to Angus Young Carers e-bulletin for May 2021

Another busy few months for Angus Young Carers. We have
seen a relaxation on COVID restrictions and schools going
 back to full time.
This month we asked Jim Dallas our Volunteer Development
Worker to introduce himself to you all and let you know a little bit
about his very important role within Young Carers.

 Despite the challenges of these
difficult times we have been able to
launch a new service that provides
one to one befriending support to
 our young carers by volunteers.
 The befriending relationship will be
time limited and will last for about
 twelve weeks.

We have been busy over the past
 year recruiting volunteers to
undertake this new role at Angus
 Carers Centre and providing them
with an intensive training program in preparedness for matching
 volunteers with young carers.

The service is now up and running and the volunteers are
meeting up with their young person. At the moment restrictions
mean that they can only do ‘walk and talks’ but this is a great way
to get to know each other. Hopefully when restrictions are lifted

they will be able to take part in more activities.

The purpose of the service is to empower and inspire our young
carers to become more involved in their community while building
 on their confidence and independence.

Our young carer volunteer befrienders come from all walks of life
and have a variety of interests. They are all really keen to support
young carers and those that have already began befriending are
 really enjoying the role.

In our next newsletter we will share some of the activities our
volunteers and young carers have been undertaking.

 IN MARCH

Michaela was very brave and was interviewed by BBC 9
Scotland. Michaela shared her experience of being a young carer
 through COVID.

Angus Young Carers teamed up with Hillcrest Futures to
 provide WRAP training.

Young carers attended two workshops in March where they

completed the Wellbeing Recovery Action Plan. WRAP is a self-

management tool that enables you to take control over your own
 mental health and wellbeing. These
workshops were fun and interactive and
the Young Carers who took part did
amazing. Thank you to Erin and Sammy at
Hillcrest Futures for two fun, educational
 sessions!

Young Carers Action Day 2021 was on 16 March.

The focus was to “Protect Young Carers’ Futures”. Our young
carers got together and shared the skills they had developed.

At Young Carers group on the 16th of
 March young carers had the
opportunity to share with the group
 something special to them.
We had Alex and his dad give a
presentation on how to make a bowl
 using a lathe.

 Olivia spoke about her bunnies
and Keira spoke about her puppies and Maja gave a powerpoint
presentation on Rambo her dog and shared her best day ever
 attending A BTS concert.

In March we sowed wild flower seeds
in a pot to create our very own door
step meadow. All seeds and pots
 were donated by Sustainable
 Kirriemuir.

 WHAT HAPPENED DURING APRIL

April brought young carers spring, sun and chocolate!!

 Activity packs were delivered to
 young carers and all were
 packed full of goodies donated
 from Asda Forfar, Coop
 Kirriemuir and Arbroath Football
 Club. All packs were delivered
to AYC doorstep by our volunteer
 drivers Bill and Derek.

Sustainable Kirriemuir have made it possible for us to make
weekly delivery packs to AYC. Packs were funded by Sustainable
Kirriemuir made up by Volunteers at Community First in Forfar,

picked up by Bill and Derek AYC Volunteer drivers. We had lots

of things to cook and learn new skills. Baking is always a
 favourite. This is certainly what
 Community coming together is
 all about.

 We are also delighted to
 announce that Sustainable
 Kirriemuir have extended the
 funding for a fortnightly baking
kit to be delivered to AYC for 5
 more weeks.

 During our ZOOM Tuesday we
 asked AYC what receiving the
 cooking packs meant to them.
Here are some of the answers.

The pasta and pizza packs provided a meal for my family for
 a night
I loved cooking with my family
 I loved eating the goodies
It kept me busy and occupied during lockdown
They were fun to make and kept me calm
I looked forward to them coming every week. It was always
a surprise to see what was in them
 It helped my cooking skills

We ran a ADHD workshop this was supported by Lynne Kelly and
Goodrum at Dundee and Angus ADHD Support Group. Young
Carers attended a Zoom session and learnt more about ADHD.
This was a fun, interactive session and the Young Carers (and
Angela!) who attended learnt lots about ADHD and enjoyed this.
 Thank you, Lynne and Gemma!

April brought about restrictions being eased and this allowed
Heather to organise fun in the park. Each week Heather and
volunteers met young people in a local park and had fun and
 games.

A donation made by Montrose Rotary
 enabled AYC to purchase outdoor
sports equipment. This will provide us
with lots of opportunities to have
outdoor fun in the Park in the future.
 Throughout April we have been
meeting up in Forfar, Brechin ,
 Montrose and Arbroath and got
physical in the park. We know you all
 love exercise.

So much happening it is important that you keep yourself up to
date on our social media as we do not want any young person to
 miss out.

Our summer programme is underway and Heather has a busy
and fun packed plan.. Activities will need to be signed up to and
there are limited places. Once we collect all the information we
will then allocate places. Please be mindful it is difficult and you
may not get your first choice however we will aim to do our very
 best.

The Scottish Youth Parliament, YouthLink Scotland and Young
Scot, commissioned by the Scottish Government, have partnered
again to deliver the next #LockdownLowdown, finding out the
issues and concerns of young people as lockdown begins to
 ease.

They want to find out more about the thoughts and feelings of
young Scots as lockdown restrictions begin to ease. The survey
closes on 31 May 2021. Click on the new survey to take part.

The survey is a partnership between Young Scot, Scottish Youth
Parliament and YouthLink Scotland, who together will analyse the
results to help inform the Scottish Government's future decision-
making process in relation to Covid-19 and lockdown restrictions.

The initial survey results, published in April 2020, revealed that
96% of young people were worried about the impact of
coronavirus on their future, with 77% concerned about their
 mental health and wellbeing
