31 March 2021 Message from Mrs Charter Weekly news from Over the past few weeks we have seen our school community reunite. It has been lovely to witness the joy on children’s faces as they reconnect with friends and staff. Once again, our school is filled with the buzz of activity and the sound of children laughing and learning together. The children have shown that they can adapt to change once more and, even those who were a little anxious earlier in the month, have adapted back to school life. Things are finally beginning to look a little more normal! Nursery It has been wonderful to see everyone back in Ladybird class. Everyone has come back with lots of smiles and enthusiasm. For our topic this term we have been looking for signs of spring. We looked at some daffodils and talked about the different parts of the daffodil plant and how to keep them healthy. We have had a garden centre role-play in the outdoor area and have begun planting some flowers. On Friday afternoons we are lucky to have Forest School where we get to play and explore the woodland area. We make dens, play hide and seek, look for bugs and birds. from Abbey Woods Academy Tel: 01865 340420 Wimblestraw Road, Wallingford, Oxon, OX10 7LZ Email: admin@abbeywoods.anthemtrust.sch.uk Tel: 01865 340420
AWA News 31 March 2021 The most exciting thing this term for us has been watching the chicks hatch and grow. It was amazing to see how the chicks hatch from the eggs and grow so quickly. We have learnt about the life cycle of the chicken, how chicks grow and how to look after them. We all got a chance to hold the chicks; they were so fluffy and soft. Next term we are starting a new growing topic with caterpillars and tadpoles and making our garden look brighter and more colourful planting seeds and flowers. Kim and Rebecca Reception It has been wonderful seeing all the children back in Reception this term and seeing the classroom full of excitement and learning. The children have settled back into the daily routines really well and I am so incredibly proud of them all. This term our focus since returning to school has been on communication and language and personal, social and emotional development. To engage the children in talking we had ‘Living Eggs’ in school and hatched ten fluffy chicks. The children were absolutely fascinated from the moment the eggs arrived in the incubator to the chicks growing and pecking around in the brooder. It provided us with lots of talking opportunities and writing opportunities too. The children made posters asking people to be careful around the chicks, wrote about what chicks need to survive and finally wrote messages to them after they had left. It was a really magical experience and the children loved holding and caring for the chicks while they were with us. We have continued with our Forest School sessions this term and have enjoyed some incredibly wet sessions which meant that we needed to build lots of dens to keep us dry. We are looking forward to getting the rope swing out again when the weather improves. In maths we continued to develop our number skills and knowledge of numbers with lots of practical activities and games. We even utilised the chicks in our maths lessons as we had 5 male chicks and 5 female chicks which we worked out made 10. We finished off the term with a virtual assembly with Reverend Teresa which was all about Easter. She explained the Easter story to us and we thought about all the things that we are grateful for. Our final piece of news is that the daffodil bulbs we planted back in November are flowering! Miss Dixon 2
AWA News 31 March 2021 Year 1 What a crazy term it has been! Year 1 have been working so hard since being back at school. In Maths we have been looking at length, height, volume and capacity. The children have enjoyed exploring these topics practically. We have improved our reading corner which the children love. Year 1 love reading and we want to encourage reading for pleasure as much as we can. In History we have been learning about Great Explorers. The children enjoyed finding out all about the Great Explorers of the past. We have also made our role play area into a travel agent which is helping with their imagination and communication skills. Miss Boyd Year 2 Year 2 have had a fantastic half term. We have loved being back at school and seeing our friends and learning lots of fantastic new things! We have enjoyed listening to our class reader, ‘Mr Majeika’, and we have even asked Mrs Bowman for the other books in the series. In English we have been learning about the story of ‘Ganesh gets married’. We have thought about the mood that is created in the story and have recreated it in our own recycled versions of the story. In Maths we have been learning about fractions which, although it’s been tricky, has been a fantastic challenge for our brains. In DT we designed and made soil transporters to help Jerry. It was hard work making the wheel turn, but we all did an amazing job! We are all very excited for Easter as we have been learning about it in RE! We have looked at how different countries around the world celebrate, as well as looking at the Easter story. Did you know that in Germany they hang decorated eggs from trees to celebrate Easter? AWA News 31 March 2021 Year 3 It’s so wonderful to have all of Year 3 back together. We have had a term of being meteorologists, learning about climate zones and the effects of climate change on the world. This culminated in the children picking a country from a particular climate zone and creating a little report to show the effects this part of the world is suffering from. We have been game designers too this term, linking our theme to the Climate Change unit and creating a children’s game that promotes Weather and Climate. We have worked so hard this term and I can only thank the children for trying so very much. We have especially loved reading Kensuke’s Kingdom - the children love to read. So please do keep up the reading over the holiday as the children will want to research Climate and Weather or read one of the many Climate Change books I have shared with them. Miss Walker Year 4 It has been amazing to have the whole class back in school this term, enjoying time together again. We can’t get enough of reading, celebrating World Book Day both at home and in school and reading Edward Tulane in guided reading lessons. We have also been learning lots about the Ancient Egyptians in our history lessons and also in our class story Secrets of a Sun King. We have been fascinated by mummies, found out there were over 2000 Gods and Goddesses, investigated the making of pyramids and written our names using hieroglyphics. In art, we have also been inspired by the Ancient Egyptians and have created patterns and images in clay. In science, we have identified the 3 states of matter and thought about how they change and debated which state of matter jelly is! Year 4 have had a fantastic term and I am so proud of the incredible work they have produced. They have been incredibly kind and generous as always. Well done! Miss Taylor 4
AWA News 31 March 2021 Year 5 As we reach the end of another disjointed term, it is great to finally have all of the children back in class. Following a lively first week, everyone has now settled back into the rhythm of the school day and some fantastic learning has occurred. The pictures show a guided reading lesson where children had to act out an attempted arrest from Emma Carroll’s book ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’. There was much laughter and some wonderful acting on display but, more importantly, the class have enjoyed the book so much that some are not wanting it to end – but it will, on the last day of term! That experience reflects how well all the children interact with each other, positively engaging with and focusing on the task, while also enjoying themselves. Also linked to fun, should your children attempt to make catapults over the holidays, they will be putting their science learning about forces into practice; although, they have been encouraged to work with adults should the catapults grow in size from the ones they created in class. Mr Jenner Year 6 It’s been fantastic to see year 6 back together again and facing the final stage of primary school before moving on to pastures new. There certainly was a buzz around the class when pupils found out which schools they were heading to in September. As teachers, we are very proud of the way the pupils have settled into their new routines with separate English and Maths lessons in different parts of the school. In maths this term, we have been tackling some complex mathematical concepts such as the relationship between decimals, fractions and percentages. We have delved into ratio and problems solving in readiness for secondary school maths which has really fired up the children’s enthusiasm for success. Brilliant work! In English, we have been studying the Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman in depth which has led to some creative writing. We have also concentrated on sentence structure and grammar. Guided reading every day has seen the children grow in confidence in reading out loud. They have immersed themselves in this fantastic book – Letters from the Lighthouse – and have gained an insight into certain aspects of World War II. We hope that, through regular reading and comprehension, children develop a deep understanding of novels and a love of reading. In Art, children have been inspired by drawing different aspects of the face in detail which is developing their attention to detail and aspects of shading. We look forward to an exciting summer term to round up the year and feel confident and ready for secondary school. Mrs Lowe & Mrs Ashton 5
