I never thought I would be a pba record holder, and to overtake the GOAT in earnings record is very humbling and something I still can‟t believe. The belt is safely secured over guppy‟s shoulder as we fly back to NC today. Time to enjoy a few days off hit the links, but like Roman Reigns said it‟s not about getting to the top but how you stay there. The work doesn‟t stop here. 8 www.bowlingworld.com - June 2021
Kyle Troup Wins KI A PBA Pla yoffs For Eighth Career Titl e by Jef Goodger Defeats Sam Cooley to win $100,000 and a WWE championship title belt Milford, Conn.—Top seed Kyle Troup defeated No. 11 seed Sam Cooley to win the 2021 Kia PBA Playoffs, 3-1, in a race-to-three-points competition, in which each game is worth one point. Troup‟s second Guaranteed Rate PBA Tour title of the season is also the eighth of his career. With the $100,000 first-place prize, Troup has now earned a single-season PBA Tour record $469,200 in 2021. Troup won the first game, then fell victim to Cooley rolling the 31st televised per- fect game in PBA Tour title-event history, knotting the match at one point apiece. “I felt really confident,” said Troup of his mindset entering game three despite Coo- ley having rolled 300. “I knew I pretty much lost that game by the seventh or eighth frame, so I switched my focus to rooting Sam on. I wanted to see him bowl 300 and get the extra $10,000. It‟s one to one, all right, I just need to win a game. I really wanted to win game three to put the pressure on him to make him feel like it was a must-win situation.” Troup did win game three, taking advantage of an open frame from Cooley in the seventh after Troup had also struggled with missed spares, including a missed 9 pin in the sixth. “I was frustrated about the bad break,” said Troup of missing the 9 pin. “I flagged it. I had to get myself refocused. Once I did that, I was okay.” Photo Credit: PBA Troup doubled in the 10th to clinch game three and take a 2-1 lead entering the fourth game. “I felt like I bowled a fantastic game four,” said Troup. “The lanes were just toast. They were ugly.” Troup struck on his first shot in the 10th frame of game four, then left an 8-10 split on his next shot, needing one pin to clinch the victory. Troup took down the 8 pin Game 2 – P rather def. Tackett, 205-188 and immediately hoisted the WWE championship title belt. Roll-off – Tackett def. USBC To Maintain Current Covid-19 Protocols For Championship Tournaments ARLINGTON, Texas - The United States Bowling Congress will con- tinue enforcing published COVID-19 protocols at the 2021 USBC Women's Championships and Open Championships, both being held in Nevada. USBC is aware of evolving guidelines on mask requirements from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local regula- tors. The championship tournaments have been underway for weeks, and participants registered with an expectation of consistent enforcement of published protocols for the duration of each event. Adjusting mask requirements for vaccinated persons mid-event would create a different playing-field standard for competitors, including those who already have bowled for score. The 2021 Women's Championships is taking place at the National Bowl- ing Stadium in Reno, Nevada, from April 23-July 4, and the Open Cham- pionships is being contested at the South Point Bowling Plaza and South Congratulations to Keith Simpkins and Allyson Goldfinger for winning the JB Bowling Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas from May 1-July 18. Local Bowlers Find Early Success In Reno At 2021 USBC Women’s Championships By Aaron Smith RENO, NV. - The trip to the 2021 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships may have been a short one for Debra King of Verdi, Nevada, and Cindy Dayton of Reno, Nevada, but they're hoping for an extended stay at the top of the leader board after a strong performance Sunday in the Ruby Divi- sion. The duo kicked off competition at the National Bowling Stadium by setting the pace in Ruby Doubles with a 1,201 combined total, and King continued strong to take over the top spot in Ruby Singles (619) and Ruby All-Events (1,788). The 2021 USBC Women's Championships started its 73-day run at the NBS on Friday and will run until July 4. More than 2,700 teams are expected to make their way to compete in The Biggest Little City in the World. King and Dayton have been bowling together for several years and believe their familiarity with each other's games helped them Sunday. Dayton led the team competition Saturday to take her place at the top of the Ruby All-Events pair with games of 208, 214 and 256 for a 678 series, and King added 174, standings. 157,192 for 523. Missing from the prominent players were both Pete Weber and Walter Ray Williams Jr., who had not yet begun their illustrious careers. The top player in earnings was Earl Anthony, who had just come off his best year in 1974, with five titles and a total of $96,160 in earnings. Earl‟s total may not seem like a lot compared to the numbers being flashed about today. At last count, Kyle Troup had earned $469,000 so far in 2021, eclipsing the one year record total of $419,700 set by Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the 2002-2003 season. However, if you adjust Earl‟s winnings from 1974 for inflation, that amount equates to $541,245 (dollartimes.com). Walter Ray‟s number is not as dramatic in change, but does clock in at a record $618,681 when adjusted for inflation. Taking a closer look at the player profiles, it is apparent that there‟s a learning process that must take place before a player joins the elites of the game.
