INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the 2019 yearbook of We the Italians!
by Umberto Mucci
We the Italians is a network where everybody can share, promote, be informed
and keep in touch with anything regarding Italy happening in the US. Our
target is not only made by the Italian Americans, but by every American who
like Italian people, food, art, culture, fashion, language, music, cinema, sport,
business, creativity. We believe that the union between Italy and the US is really
the perfect storm, and that is the reason why our name is an Italian tribute to
the first three words of the American constitution. Our network is composed by
a website, a magazine, a newsletter, an archive of Italian websites in the US
and five books: all of them about Italy and/in the United States.
In 2019 we interviewed 25 people, friends of We the Italians who gave us 24
different views about 24 different topics of the relation between Italy and the US.
These are the topics you will find in this yearbook: Little Italies around the US;
Italy in St. Louis, Italian opera and the Italian American integration; Italy in
Ohio; How the US helped Italy after World War II; Italian American
Women, Food, and Identity; Dick Biondi, "The Wild I-tralian"; How to get

undisputed king of Indianapolis 500; The incredible story of Amadeo P.

Navy musical band; the future of Italian food exports to America; the Italian
American Baseball Foundation; ancient Rome as a constant inspiration for the
USA.
Among our guests we've had 15 men and 10 women: we had 23 single interviews
and a double one. 7 of our guests live in Italy, 18 in the US. All of them share
the love for both Italy and the US. So you will find 24 interviews, each of them
in two versions, in Italian and in English.

We want to thank all the interviewees that made this possible. Also, we want
to thank our readers and followers on the social media we are on. And last but
not least, we want to thank all the people that work hard to build and grow this
network.
We want to share with you a few numbers regarding our 2019, besides the
interviews. During 2019 we've promoted on our website 7,686 news (2,001 of
them about Italy, the other ones about something Italian in the US); published
172 articles in the 12 issues of our Magazine; published one yearbook (about
the 2018 interviews) both paperback and digital. Our archive of websites
regarding non-profit organizations, groups, departments, festivals, museums,
associations and foundations celebrating something Italian in the US contains
1,494 records. During 2019 we've sent 1.157.831 newsletters: with 12 months,
9 areas and several of you who subscribed to more than one, this is the final
number. We've passed the 43,000 likes on our Facebook page: please, like us
if you haven't already done, here. We have a Linkedin group with 1,030
members (we're waiting for you, here, come join us). We're also on Twitter (950
followers), Instagram (1,015 followers) and YouTube, and we're planning on
improving our presence on all of these social media. During 2019 we’ve also
organized and/or spoken at thirteen events in Italy and in the US, everything
documented in the Events section of our website. It has been a great year, but
once again, we're just getting started.
So stay tuned, fasten your seat belt and enjoy the ride. The future’s so bright, we
gotta wear shades!

America’s Little Italies: Past, Present and
Future. Meet Prof. Jerome Krase
There is a fascination in the concept of Little Italy that still exists
today, when many of these Italian neighborhoods are no longer
there. Outdated, but only in some cities, the principle of physically
limiting an area of the city according to Italian criteria, the concept
of being together, making communities and proudly celebrating
their origins remains, sometimes more virtually. We the Italians is in
part just that, the virtual re-proposition on the web of the principles
that held together the Italians who arrived in America during mass
emigration.

St. Louis
Oftentimes, Italian or Italian American associations at the center of
a community in one of the many American cities are led by
exceptional Italian American men or women who have gained over
the years the experience necessary to preside over a community that
recognizes itself in loving and celebrating Italy. They are sometimes
white-haired leaders who, with their charisma, represent Italy in
their cities in an exceptional way.
Sometimes, much more rarely, these leaders are younger. They still
exceptionally deliver, but they also bring innovation with a younger,

The topic we are addressing this time, among the many that trace
the relationship between Italy and the United States from different
angles, concerns Italian opera and the Italian Americans. Professor
Davide Ceriani is a musicologist who teaches at Rowan University
(Glassboro, NJ). A few months ago, he gave a multimedia
presentation at the Library of Congress on how opera has impacted
the development of the Italian American identity. We welcome him
on We the Italians, thanking him for his availability.

Ohio is the eighth American state for population of Italian origin.
Many of them reside in the northern part of the state, particularly in
Cleveland, but not only.

How the United States helped Italy fighting
for its future after the World War II
Italy and the US experienced a multifaceted relationship from 1943
to 1955. After the war the US played a historic role in assisting Italy
with rebuilding and planning its future. Threatening this effort, both
within and beyond Italy’s borders, were communism and the Italian
Communist Political Party (PCI).
During the rebuilding of Italy the US participated in many aspects
of Italians’ daily lives. A great deal of political, military, social, and
economic involvement by the US occurred between 1943 and 1955.
To be clear from the start, here at We the Italians we have been, are
and always will be grateful to the United States for many reasons,

The topic of the presence of women in the homes of Italian
American communities throughout the United States has always
been fascinating, fundamental for the survival of the families of our
compatriots in America, and somewhat underestimated. The topic
of food is similar, equally important and links many other aspects of
the life of the Italian Americans in the last century. We talk about it
with Carol and Andrea Dottolo, authors of a mother-daughter
research contained in the book "Italian American Women, Food,
and Identity".

The story of Dick Biondi is unknown to many. I didn't know about
it myself, but today there is who is working on a documentary that
will tell all Americans, and in particular those of Italian origin, about
the life and career of the number one DJ in the United States in the
early '60s, the first ever to play the Beatles on an American radio.
Pamela Enzweiler-Pulice, a long-time fan and friend of Dick's, is our
today’s guest. She is the driving force behind the creation and
production of this interesting documentary. We will learn to know
the great Dick Biondi, and to discover that his gifts and the details

Dual citizenship is a very important topic for many members of the
Italian American community. Through these years I’ve met and
spoken with hundreds of Americans of Italian descent eager to
officially become Italian citizens, ready to commit to an effort that
requires patience, money, time and it is not easy at all.
I always tell them that no matter what the official laws say, they ARE
Italian. But I understand that having a true Italian passport is
something matchless. That is why We the Italians and I personally

Some scholars have studied the new Italian emigration to the United
States. It's a very interesting topic, because it's obviously a different
emigration in numbers, people and dynamics, compared to the one
of 100 years ago: and yet, illuminating parallels can be identified.
And the relationship between the heirs of the emigrants of the past,
born Americans of Italian origin, and the new emigrants, born and
raised in Italy, is also very interesting. We talk about this with a very
welcome guest, Professor Teresa Fiore, who holds the Inserra
Endowed Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies and has also
written essays about this new emigration.

To our memory, we don't think that it ever existed in any world-
class sports competition a dominion equal to that for years exercised
by the Dallara, Italian excellence, in the Indianapolis 500, the more
than a hundred years old mythical car race, the most famous in the
world in the collective imagination of insiders, enthusiasts or just
curious.
The 2019 edition of this world-class event dominated for years by
the Italian Dallara will be held on 26 May, and that is why we are
particularly proud and happy to host for this new interview a true
icon of Made in Italy automotive, a great Italian who has been

If there is a story that all Italian Americans and all Italians living in
Italy should know, it is the story of Amadeo P. Giannini: he realized
the American dream, not only for himself, but for an entire society.
There are so many reasons why, today more than ever, the story of
his life tells the best part of the Italian DNA, whether you live in
Italy or in the United States.
To tell it all is not an easy task: Prof. Francesca Valente did it very
well in her book "A.P. Giannini: The People's Banker", published
for the series called "The Mentoris Project". Prof. Valente has been

It's not every day that you meet someone who has actually changed
the world. Maybe, as I recall, for me it's the first time, even if our
chat took place on the phone, connecting Italy and California thanks
to some devices all equipped with (at least) one microchip. And
Federico Faggin, the creator of the first microchip in history, is the
protagonist of this interview. He is a wonderful Italian who
immigrated to America some time ago, an extraordinary testimonial
of how exceptional things happen when Italy and the United States
meet, who just last June 8th was the protagonist of a beautiful event
in Vinci, Leonardo's homeland, organized by our friend Roberto

The year 2019 sees the ongoing celebration of the 200th anniversary
of diplomatic relations between the then young democracy of the
United States and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The events, which
last throughout the year, are organized by various public and private
entities under the patronage of the American Consulate in Florence.
It's just a coincidence that a few days ago an American, better an
Italian American, Rocco Commisso, bought the football team of
Florence, the Fiorentina. But it is a further confirmation of the deep
relationships that still today, 200 years after their beginning,
indissolubly bind Tuscany and the United States. Our guest is

On September 12, 1962, in Houston, in Texas, the State where he
would be killed just over a year later, President John Fitzgerald
Kennedy made a historic speech, in which he announced the race to
the Moon. "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the
other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard,"
JFK said.
When you have to do something hard, you rely on the Italians. And
so today, exactly 50 years after the first man on the Moon, we are

Italian American cuisine
Over the years, I have sometimes published interviews in which I
do not completely agree with some of the answers. These interviews
are among the ones I like most, because feeding the debate, helping
to reflect and listening to different opinions is one of the most
beautiful things that can be done by those who inform and
communicate, in full respect of all and when the interlocutors are,
as in this case, informed, competent, available, passionate and
lovely.

Feast in Boston!
Summer is the festival season. In the United States there are more
than 200 that celebrate Italianity, according to the list published each
year by OSIA. Some of these were born many years ago, from the
desire of Italian emigrants to celebrate their country of origin,
sometimes their region, sometimes their city: and almost always
their religion and the patron Saint of their town of origin had a
fundamental role.
One of the largest, most popular and beloved of these festivals is
the St. Anthony’s Feast in Boston, MA. This year the festival is 100

Among the Italians who have been successful thanks to the United
States there are undoubtedly the names of Antonio Meucci and
Giuseppe Garibaldi. A scientist, the first; a warrior, the second.
Nothing further from each other. But few people know that Meucci
and Garibaldi not only knew each other, but they shared a house
and some adventures together.
The place that celebrates their association is Staten Island, the
district of New York with the highest percentage of Italian

The history of the Italian emigrants who left for America is often a
history of difficulties, suffering and accidents. Often these accidents
occurred in shameful and almost impossible work situations, which
were the only ones left for the latest arrivals, the Italians willing to
do anything to survive and allow their children to have a better
education and a better life. Sometimes there were discriminatory
prevarications.

As every year, on the occasion of the second Monday of October
and of the celebrations of Columbus Day, We the Italians publishes
an interview dedicated to Christopher Columbus. It's one of the
ways we have to keep the focus on a theme that we care a lot about,
which is also the only one on where we strongly and openly take
sides on: defending Colombo, and therefore the Italian American

Foundation: beautiful people for a
beautiful mission
Many times my interviews have given light to people and institutions
born in America who work to help Italy, improve the bridge
between our two countries, and represent in an excellent way an
aspect - territorial, thematic, professional or cultural - of being part
of the Italian American community.
The friend who is today the protagonist of this interview is exactly
such a person, and so is the institution that he presides. Joe
Quagliano is a great Italian American who heads the Italian

Ancient Rome, a constant inspiration for
the United States of America
Last October, during the visit of the President of the Italian
Republic Sergio Mattarella to the White House, President Donald
Trump said the following words: "The United States and Italy are
bound together by a shared cultural and political heritage dating
back thousands of years to Ancient Rome.” An uproar broke out,
because some people wanted to believe that President Trump had
made a gaffe: but it is clear that he was referring to ancient Rome

Umberto Mucci
Umberto Mucci has a degree in Political Sciences International
Address and an Advanced degree in Marketing and
Communication.
He is the Founder and CEO of We the Italians. He represents in
Italy the Italian American Museum of New York. He has been the
co-director of “èItalia for USA”, a bimestral magazine regarding
Italy in the US, and is Founder and has been Secretary General of
Fondazione Roma Europea. He has been Head of International
Relations of Innovarte for the exhibition “Italian Logos –
Testimonies of the art to excel”, and Head of the Diplomatic section
of the magazine “Romacapitale”. He has been guest lecturer at
Accent, where he lectures about the Italian emigration in the US and
about the actual Italian presence in the US to students from
Michigan State University, University of Minnesota and Santa
Barbara City College.
He published five books regarding the relation between Italy and
the United States.
He speaks Italian, English, Spanish and a little bit of French.

We the Italians è un network dove tutti possono condividere, promuovere, essere
informati e tenersi in contatto con tutto ciò che accade in Italia negli Stati Uniti.
Il nostro target non è fatto solo dagli italoamericani, ma da tutti gli americani
che amano l’Italia, il cibo, l'arte, la cultura, la moda, la lingua, la musica, il
cinema, lo sport, la creatività del nostro Paese. Crediamo che l'unione tra Italia
e Stati Uniti sia davvero il perfetto connubio, ed è per questo che il nostro nome
è un omaggio italiano alle prime tre parole della costituzione americana. Il nostro
network è composto da un sito web, una rivista, una newsletter, un archivio di
siti web italiani negli Stati Uniti e cinque libri: tutti sull'Italia negli Stati Uniti.
Nel 2019 abbiamo intervistato 25 persone, amici di We the Italians che ci

Spesso, le associazioni italiane o italoamericane al centro di una

Congresso su come l’opera ha influito sullo sviluppo dell’identità

Come gli Stati Uniti aiutarono l'Italia a
combattere per il proprio futuro dopo la
seconda guerra mondiale
L'Italia e gli Stati Uniti hanno vissuto un rapporto sfaccettato dal
1943 al 1955. Dopo la guerra gli Stati Uniti giocarono un ruolo
storico nell'aiutare l'Italia a ricostruire e pianificare il suo futuro. A
minacciare questo sforzo, sia all'interno che all'esterno dei confini
italiani, furono il comunismo e il Partito Politico Comunista Italiano
(PCI).
Durante la ricostruzione dell'Italia, gli Stati Uniti parteciparono a
molti aspetti della vita quotidiana degli italiani. Moltissimo
coinvolgimento politico, militare, sociale ed economico da parte

all’inizio degli anni ’60, il primo a passare i Beatles in una radio
americana.

Dick, motore della creazione e della realizzazione di questo

pazienza, denaro, tempo e non è affatto facile.
Dico sempre loro che, a prescindere da ciò che dicono le leggi
ufficiali, SONO italiani. Ma capisco che avere un vero passaporto

ovviamente di una emigrazione differente per numeri, persone e

individuare dei parallelismi illuminanti. Ed è anche molto
interessante il rapporto tra gli eredi degli emigranti di una volta, nati
Americani di origine italiana, e i nuovi emigrati, nati e cresciuti in

Se c’è una storia che tutti gli italoamericani e tutti gli italiani che

Giannini: che realizzò il sogno americano, non solo per lui, ma per
un’intera società. Sono davvero tanti i motivi per cui, oggi più che
mai, le sue vicende raccontano la parte migliore del dna italiano, sia
che si viva in Italia, sia che si viva negli Stati Uniti.
Raccontarle tutte e bene non è impresa facile: ci è riuscita molto
bene la Prof.ssa Francesca Valente nel suo libro “A.P. Giannini: The

Non capita tutti i giorni di incontrare qualcuno che ha
concretamente cambiato il mondo. Forse, vado a memoria, per me
è la prima volta, anche se la nostra chiacchierata si è svolta al
telefono, connettendo l’Italia e la California grazie ad alcuni devices
tutti dotati di (almeno) un microchip. Ed è Federico Faggin, il
creatore del primo microchip della storia, il protagonista di questa
intervista. Un meraviglioso italiano emigrato tempo fa in America,
uno straordinario testimonial di come eccezionali cose accadono
quando si incontrano Italia e Stati Uniti, che proprio lo scorso 8
giugno è stato protagonista di un bellissimo evento a Vinci, patria di

Nel 2019 vengono celebrati i 200 anni delle relazioni diplomatiche
tra gli Stati Uniti, allora giovane democrazia, e il Granducato di
Toscana. Gli eventi, che durano per tutto l’anno, sono organizzati
da diversi soggetti pubblici e privati sotto il patrocinio del Consolato
Americano a Firenze.
E' solo un caso se qualche giorno fa un americano, meglio un
italoamericano, Rocco Commisso, ha comprato la squadra di calcio
di Firenze, la Fiorentina. Ma è un ulteriore conferma delle profonde
relazioni che ancora oggi, a 200 anni dal loro inizio, legano
indissolubilmente la Toscana e gli Stati Uniti. Il nostro ospite è

Nel corso di questi anni, qualche volta mi è capitato di pubblicare
interviste in cui qualche risposta non mi trova completamente
d'accordo. Sono tra quelle che mi piacciono di più, perché
alimentare il dibattito, aiutare a riflettere e ascoltare le opinioni
diverse è tra le cose più belle che possa fare chi informa e divulga,
nel pieno rispetto di tutti e quando gli interlocutori sono, come in
questo caso, informati, competenti, disponibili, appassionati e
piacevoli.

L'estate è la stagione dei festival. Negli Stati Uniti ce ne sono più di
200 che celebrano l'Italianità, secondo l'elenco pubblicato ogni anno
dall'OSIA. Alcuni di questi nacquero tanti anni fa, dalla volontà degli
emigrati italiani di celebrare e festeggiare il loro Paese di origine, a
volte la loro regione, a volte la loro città: e quasi sempre la religione
e il Santo patrono del loro luogo di provenienza aveva un ruolo
fondamentale.
Uno dei più grandi, popolari e amati di questi festival è quello di
Sant'Antonio a Boston, MA. Quest'anno il festival compie 100 anni,

Tra gli italiani che hanno avuto successo anche grazie agli Stati Uniti
ci sono senza dubbio i nomi di Antonio Meucci e di Giuseppe
Garibaldi. Uno scienziato, il primo; un combattente, il secondo.
Niente di più distante l'uno dall'altro. E invece pochi sanno che
Meucci e Garibaldi non solo si conoscevano, ma hanno condiviso
insieme una casa e alcune avventure.
Il luogo che ne celebra il sodalizio è a Staten Island, il distretto di
New York con la più alta percentuale di italoamericani rispetto alla
popolazione totale. Il Garibaldi-Meucci Museum compie 100 anni

una storia di difficoltà, di sofferenze, di incidenti. Spesso questi
incidenti si verificarono in situazioni di lavoro vergognose e quasi
impossibili, che erano le uniche rimaste per gli ultimi arrivati, gli
italiani disposti a tutto pur di sopravvivere e permettere ai loro figli
di avere un'educazione e una vita migliore. A volte ci furono delle
prevaricazioni di natura discriminatoria.

E' sempre interessante e divertente scoprire storie nuove, particolari
e per me sconosciute, che riguardano qualcosa di bello e vincente
nella storia della comunità italoamericana. Spesso queste storie
riguardano lo sport, che in America ha visto trionfare davvero
tantissimi campioni italoamericani.
La storia di oggi riguarda 7 (SETTE!) fratelli golfisti che riempirono
la casa di famiglia di trofei e vittorie e fecero l'orgoglio del padre,
emigrato all'inizio del secolo scorso insieme con sua moglie da
Potenza, in Basilicata. E’ importante anche perché contribuisce a

Sono tanti gli episodi nella storia degli Stati Uniti che hanno visto
protagonisti alcuni italiani. Alcuni sono molto noti, altri meritano di
essere conosciuti di più.
L’episodio oggetto di questa intervista è del secondo tipo: non sono
molti coloro che lo conoscono, ma è davvero molto interessante e
racconta quanto sin dalla loro nascita gli Stati Uniti - e i loro leader
– hanno riconosciuto la bravura e il talento italiano. Stavolta si parla
di musica, e ringraziamo il Prof. Francesco Martinelli che ci racconta

L’export italiano verso gli Stati Uniti è in crescita, ma può fare molto,
ma veramente molto meglio. E’ uno degli obiettivi che noi di We
the Italians ci siamo dati, aiutare i prodotti italiani ad arrivare ed
essere comprati dagli americani, non solo quelli di origine italiana,
che sono ovviamente i primi Ambasciatori del Made in Italy.
Il cibo è ovviamente il primo settore al quale si pensa: l’Italia è la più
grande superpotenza mondiale quanto a gusto, qualità e diversità, e
l’export contribuisce sempre più alla nostra economia. E’ per questo

Nel corso della visita del Presidente della Repubblica Italiana Sergio
Mattarella alla Casa Bianca dello scorso Ottobre, il Presidente
Donald Trump ha detto le seguenti parole: “The United States and
Italy are bound together by a shared cultural and political heritage
dating back thousands of years to Ancient Rome.” Si è scatenato un
putiferio, perché alcuni hanno voluto ritenere che il Presidente
Trump avesse fatto una gaffe: ma è evidente che si riferiva all’antica
Roma e all’influenza che essa ha trasmesso ai Padri Fondatori degli
Stati Uniti.

A PROPOSITO DELL’AUTORE
Umberto Mucci
Umberto Mucci ha una laurea in Scienze Politiche con indirizzo
Internazionale ed un Master in Marketing e Comunicazione.
E’ il fondatore e CEO di We the Italians, la piattaforma online con
il più alto numero di contenuti tra Italia e Stati Uniti. Rappresenta in
Italia l’Italian American Museum di New York. E’ stato co-direttore
di “èItalia for USA”, sezione dedicata all’Italia negli Stati Uniti
all’interno della rivista èItalia; è co-fondatore ed è stato per 7 anni
Segretario Generale della Fondazione Roma Europea. E' stato
responsabile delle relazioni internazionali di Innovarte per la mostra
"Loghi d’Italia - Testimonianze dell'arte di eccellere", e a capo della
sezione diplomatica della rivista "Romacapitale".
Ha tenuto lezioni presso il Centro Internazionale di Studi Accent
sull'emigrazione italiana negli Stati Uniti per studenti provenienti da
Michigan State University, University of Minnesota e Santa Barbara
City College. E' stato relatore in numerosi eventi pubblici sia in Italia
che negli Stati Uniti. Ha pubblicato libri sia in italiano che in inglese
