Spring/Summer 2014, Issue 12. Help us make dreams affordable at habitat.mb.ca. Wawanesa Insurance Outfits the New ReStore H abitat for Humanity Manitoba opened a second ReStore in Winnipeg at 1081 Ellice Avenue (formerly a Safeway store at the corner of Ellice and Wall). We kicked off the Grand Opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 19th. Establishing the new retail outlet requires a significant capital investment to configure the space being rented to suit our needs and for the equipment necessary to operate the store. The latter includes large items such as signage on the building and at the street, a security system, cash registers, phones, racking and shelving, a walker-stacker and pallet jacks, and a host of small items like fire extinguishers and brooms. All in, the cost to open will be close to $175,000. While opening the store will prove to be a sound investment, having the capital available to do so was a challenge. continued on page 3.

Our Apprentices A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work. From left to right: Stephen, Shawn, Rob Our Apprentices At Habitat for Humanity we talk about giving a hand up – not a hand out – to our partner families, however the same holds true for our staff. We currently have three of our Construction Team enrolled in the Carpentry Course, at Red River College, through Apprenticeship Manitoba. STEPHEN, who began his career with Habitat as a summer student in 2011, fell in love with residential house construction and Habitat for Humanity. Once he completed his degree from the U of W, we encouraged Stephen to join us full time and to enroll in the Carpentry Course at Red River College, as an apprentice. Stephen has just completed his Level 2 apprenticeship, and is now beginning his Level 3. His natural leadership skills and joie de vive disposition made him an excellent addition to our team! SHAWN joined the Habitat for Humanity Construction team through the Rockwood program in April of 2014, and showed an aptitude for construction, but also has natural leadership ability, which became evident as he worked with our volunteers. Shawn had already put some hours in towards his apprenticeship prior to joining Habitat and once he joined our team full time, was accepted into the Carpentry Apprenticeship Program as well. Shawn is currently a Level 1 apprentice. ROB began his career with Habitat as an assistant to one of the trades who did work for Habitat, and when it looked like there may be a shortage of work, he approached Vern, our Director of Construction to see if there may be a position for him here. Rob has a personality that fits right in with our entire Construction team – and inquired about the possibility of apprenticing with us. We were very encouraged by his dedication and level of commitment to Habitat, and were delighted when his application for the apprenticeship in Carpentry was accepted. Rob has completed his Level 1 apprenticeship, and is currently in Level 2. Congratulations to all three of our Apprentices! We look forward to watching you learn and grow your skills, and look forward to the day that you receive your Red Seal as Carpenters. Help us make dreams affordable at habitat.mb.ca. 7
