New Name • WASP-AI forced ”old WASP” to change name • WASP-AS • WASP Autonomous Systems and Software • However, also WASP-AS contains a large amount of AI/ML research • AI & ML cluster – 22 PhD students • Perception and Learning cluster – 13 PhD students • The old WASP graduate school is now the AS track of the WASP graduate school
Organization • Program Management Group (PMG) • Karl-Erik Årzén, LU, chair • Bo Wahlberg, KTH • David Sands, Chalmers • Anders Ynnerman, LiU • Graduate School Management Team (GS-AS) • Bo Bernhardsson, LU • Christian Berger, Chalmers • Daniel Axehill, LiU • Patric Jensfelt, KTH
Current Status PhD students Batch Academic Industrial Affiliated Total Batch 1 (started 2016) 24 23 14 61 Batch 2 (started 2018) 30 21 6 57 Total 54 44 20 118 • During 2017 one academic and one affiliated PhD student have left the program at their own request
Extension • Originally, WASP lasted until 2025 • WASP-AI has a duration of 2018-2026 • To simplify things WASP-AS has been extended with one year so that they both end 2026 • 145 MSEK • Makes it possible to have a final Batch 4 of PhD students starting 2022
New Cluster Structure • Background • Emphasis on AI & ML in Batch 2 calls • Inclusion of Security in WASP • New recruitments in Software Technology • Result • Three new clusters • Changed names of a few of the old clusters • Tasks and duties of the cluster leaders defined • Major cluster and minor cluster
Current Clusters • Software Engineering for Smart Systems • Cluster Leader: Jan Bosch, Chalmers • Number of PhD students with this as major: 5 • Autonomous Clouds and Networks • Cluster leader: Erik Elmroth, Umeå University • Number of PhD students with this as major: 12 • Interaction and Communication with Sensor- Rich Autonomous Agents • Cluster leader: Jonas Unger, Linköping University • Number of PhD students with this as major: 5
Current Clusters • Perception and Learning in Interactive Autonomous Systems • Cluster leader: Kalle Åström, Lund University • Number of PhD students with this as major: 13 • Smart Localization Systems • Cluster leader: Fredrik Gustafsson, Linköping University • Number of PhD students with this as major: 10 • Large Scale Optimization and Control • Cluster leader: Mikael Johansson, KTH • Number of PhD students with this as major: 8
Current Clusters • Automated Transport Systems • Cluster leader: Bo Wahlberg, KTH • Number of PhD students with this as major: 22 • Security for Autonomous Systems • Cluster leader: Sonja Buchegger, KTH • Number of PhD students with this as major: 10 • Software Technology for Autonomous Systems • Cluster leader: Martin Monperrus, KTH • Number of PhD students with this as major: 9 • AI and Machine Learning • Cluster leader: Vacant • Number of PhD students with this as major: 22
Cluster Leader Tasks • Have a broad overview of the research questions and research methodology of the PhDs students • Identify and initiate connections among the PhDs that may lead to collaborations • Gather the PhDs in the cluster at least once per year for a meeting. It is recommended that also a second meeting is held each year with focus on collaboration. • Report the cluster progress to WASP PMG and ISAB • Organize cluster activities in connection with WASP events such as the winter conference and WASP courses • Maintain a cluster webpage that is part of www.wasp- sweden.org
Cluster Leader Benefits • The coordinator may appoint a vice coordinator • The coordinator is compensated at a level of 5% of the salary. This may be split so that parts of it goes to the vice coordinator, e.g., 3% + 2%.
Recruitments • Professor in Software Technology (KTH) • Martin Monperrus • University of Lille, France • Senior Lecturer in Software Engineering (LU) • Christoph Reichenbach • Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany and Google • Professor in Data Science (UmU) • Kary Främling • Aalto University, Finland

International Trips • Batch 2 • Toulouse (+ possibly Barcelona) • Batch 1 • Individual group trips
WASP Expeditions
Expeditions: Background • WASP has so far mostly funded individual PhD student projects • Although these have been integrated into clusters WASP so far has lacked support for projects that aggregate multiple research groups. • Identified by ISAB • WASP Expeditions are modeled after NSF’s Expeditions in Computing • High gain/high risk targeted projects with a specific challenging goal rather than long term thematic frameworks
Expeditions: Teams • Two PIs and 2-4 PostDocs during two years • An advantage if the PIs are from • different disciplines, • different universities, or • If the PIs not have collaborated before • A PI may only be involved in one Expedition proposal • More than two PostDocs can only receive funding if the PIs are from different universities and if they bring different expertise to the project and have no significant priori history of collaboration
Expeditions: Teams • The PIs should be able to spend at least 20% of their time on active research and coordination in the project • Will receive WASP funding corresponding to 20% of their salary costs • The PostDocs do not have to be international Postdocs • Proposals accepted from Chalmers, KTH, LiU, LU, and UmU
Expeditions: Duration • Two years • May be extended with two additional years after evaluation
Expedition: Budget • Up to 40M SEK for the first two years • 8 small expeditions or • 4 large + one small
Expedition: Application & Timeline • Two step evaluation • Short proposal • Selected projects will be invited to submit a full proposal • Timeline: • May 2: Call opens • Aug 10: Deadline short proposal • Sep 10: Decision about short proposals communicated • Sep 28: Deadline long proposals • Oct 27: Final decisions communicated
Way forward Subject to the decisions of the WASP board • Call for PhD student Batch 3 • To be in place Jan 1 2020 • Second group of 9 strategic recruitments • To be in place during 2020 • Call for PhD student Batch 4 • To be in place Jan 1 2022 • Additional initiatives • .......
