Editor’s Comment. PROGRAMME EDITOR DAVE KUZIO RETURNS THIS WEEK AND IS FULL OF PRAISE FOR BRAD SINGLETON, TWITCH AND JACKSON HASTINGS – WHICH MAKES A CHANGE FROM HIS USUAL RANTS. The main word being bandied about in the world of sport at Brad Singleton... the moment is ‘greed’. All this talk of a European Super amazing gesture. League in football (sure I’ve heard that competition name somewhere else), shows that money talks and the powers- that-be don’t really care about the loyal fans. Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case in rugby league. Wigan forward Brad Singleton has decided to put the needs of supporters first with his amazing gesture of donating his jersey that he wore against Leeds Rhinos – with all proceeds going to the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Instead of putting in an auction site, where he could receive plenty of big money offers, just like what happened when all the Wigan players wore shirts featuring messages of support for Rob Burrow last season, Singleton has decided to have a raffle with tickets costing just £2. Singleton is aware that money is hard to come by in the world we are living in at the moment, so he is giving everyone the opportunity to try and win this shirt. Like the famous saying says, ‘you’ve got to be in it to win’. I know I wouldn’t normally be able to get into a bidding war to win a shirt like this, but by buying some tickets, I have as good a chance as anyone. My main point of this, is not all people in sport are motivated by money, greed and power. Full credit to Brad, this gesture is fantastic, and I expect the winner of the shirt will be grateful to have had the chance to be involved. To enter the raffle to win Brad Singleton's shirt in aid of MNDA, visit bit.ly/WWRLSingoShirt by 3pm on Tuesday 27th April to secure your tickets, priced at just £2 each. I was not alone at the weekend when I logged into Twitch to watch Wigan Warriors Women take on Warrington in the Women’s Super League (ok, my son logged me in). I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked, there were hardly any streaming issues, and it was good to see instant replays. If it is possible, I would like Twitch to get involved and stream more games. It was well presented, and unlike other streaming sites I didn’t want to throw it out of the window. As a fan of the club, I was disappointed to hear that Jackson Hastings would be leaving the Warriors at the end of the season. And it’s only for selfish reasons, he is a joy to watch, and he has carried himself well on and off the field throughout all this speculation. Last season I tweeted that I was struggling with mental health issues, and he replied and offered me some support. I will never forget that, and I hope he finally gets that Super League winners ring to take home at the end of the year. Thanks for the memories Jackson. Enjoy the game. WARRIOR - 09

Consistently the best. TOM BRAMWELL OF THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS WRITES. As we all know by now, it has been announced that It'll be difficult to see him move on and depart Super League - Jackson Hastings will be leaving Wigan Warriors at the he's a genuine superstar of the sport - but he's never made end of the season to return to Australia with Wests Tigers any secret of his intention to return home and prove himself in – it’s a blow to the competition but let’s enjoy his talents the NRL. for as long as he is in Super League. The circumstances surrounding his departure from Manly Sea He's consistently been the best player on the park since Eagles have been well documented and it's fair to say he pulling on the cherry and white jersey again and he's doing it wouldn't have found himself playing in the Super 8s Qualifiers on the back of a very limited pre-season following an for Salford had things gone the way he would have liked. extended break in his native Australia. When he arrived at the AJ Bell Stadium, the Red Devils were really struggling. Ian Watson has consistently demonstrated how new signings had to earn their spot in his team - most notably when Todd Carney didn't even get on the field when named on the interchange bench for his first game with the club - but Hastings started against Leeds just days after arriving in the country. He was inspirational and his impact was immediate, helping the club snap a seven-game losing streak against the Rhinos, despite the dismissal of captain Lee Mossop after just 20 minutes. Fifteen months later, Jackson had been named the Steve Prescott Man of Steel and was preparing for Salford's first- ever appearance in a Grand Final at Old Trafford. The move to Wigan followed and while lots of things changed - the facilities at the Warriors are certainly a class above and he has some much more celebrated teammates around him - the one thing that remains is Hastings' commitment to giving his all every time he steps on the field. If selected, tonight will be Jackson's 50th Super League appearance. Across those, no one will have carried the ball more. No one will have spent more time chirping at the opposition (and teammates, on occasion). And for a little bloke in the halves, he doesn't half put his body on the line. Throughout his stay in Super League, it's felt inevitable he'd be back in the NRL sooner rather than later. Two Grand Finals in his two full seasons over here is a testament to the quality he brings to the team. He will be missed, undoubtedly. But the announcement of a new long-term contract for Harry Smith this week, plus the fact that Jai Field and Bevan French can both operate in the halves, means the preparation may well have already been made for life after Jackson. For the remainder of the season, we should embrace and enjoy every play. His commitment to Salford never waivered even after his move to Wigan was announced - particularly during the two play-off contests between the two clubs - and he'll no doubt continue to give his all for his current club until the day he leaves. I wouldn't bet against him packing a Super League winners' ring when does. In association with CAR CENTRE WIGAN WARRIOR - 15

You get to train and play with the likes of Jackson Hastings and Tommy Leuluai, two players who you presumably watch and work with everyday and you can learn from. Definitely. That is what I am doing this year, and what I did last year as well. I am taking in as much as I can and learning off two great half-backs and that is only going to help me in the future to do what I want to do in the game. You have featured in every game so far this season, so there are definitely chances for you to play. That is what I spoke to Lammy about. He said, keep doing what you are doing, take your chance when you play and hopefully, I’ll get a few more starts. I was off the bench a lot last season, so hopefully I can earn a few more starts and keep developing my game. continued overleaf 22 - WARRIOR WARRIOR - 23
Even with four recognised halves at the club, we have seen already with losing Jai Field to injury, there will perhaps be even more opportunities. Anything can happen in rugby, and hopefully I can keep my place in the squad and when my chance comes, I can take it with both hands. Adrian Lam has made no secret to the fact that he has watched you for a long time, particularly with the England Academy from afar, he also likes to have a half on the bench which is obviously good for you. Yeah, definitely. Lammy has always spoke to me to since he came to the club. He likes the way I play and has said he will work with me, so I am really happy to have Lammy say that to me. With the half-back on the bench, it’s good for myself and hopefully I can bring something to the team every week. The kicking game is a particular strength of yours, a left footed kicker as well, it offers the side something different, it’s good to have the different tools? Yeah. That is one of my key aspects that I work on a lot. Hopefully, that will help me get in the team and I can use it to my advantage and hopefully the results will show that. All through the Under 18s and 19s, you kicked goals, that is also something you could take on later in your career? Me and Zak are always practicing after training, and I am always at him saying that I should be the kicker, and he always gives it me back. At the minute, he is kicking well so if I get a start, you never know. Hopefully, in the future I would love to do some goal kicking. Just in general, what do you make of the start to the season and the prospects for the rest of 2021? The prospects are massive when you look at our squad, the bulk of players around my age, it is very exciting. The season so far? We couldn’t have asked for anymore, three wins, but there are definitely areas we still want to work on. We’ll continue to do that. continued overleaf WARRIOR - 25

CLUB LEGEND DEAN SAMPSON. This section would normally feature a player that currently plays or works at Castleford that has links to Wigan, but since Danny Orr left to become Salford’s assistant coach, there is no one left. So, for this week, I am going to focus on a former Castleford player that has legendary status among the Tigers faithful – and that player is Dean Sampson. Sampson joined Castleford in 1986 from amateur club Stanley Rangers, and went on to make his club debut in 1987. In 431 appearances for the club, the prop forward scored 68 tries and was always praised for his strong running and tough tackling technique. Sampson was on the bench during Castleford’s famous 33-2 Regal Trophy Final win over Wigan in 1994, and he has since been inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame. Many Wigan fans will remember Sampson, he became somewhat of a pantomime villain in the nineties following an incident in the 1994 Premiership Final that saw Kelvin Skerrett leave the field with a broken jaw. 28 - WARRIOR Oliver Holmes grabs a try against Leeds Rhinos. Wigan probably did not deserve to find themselves 14-0 after Gale slotted over a penalty, but they went into the break in better shape after Morgan Escare showed some neat footwork to cross over as they trailed 14-4. The Tigers extended their lead three minutes after half time with Jesse Sene-Lefao taking advantage of some poor defending to put the visitors 16 points in front. Wigan threw everything at Castleford in the second half, but it took them until the 73rd minute to break through as Escare went over for his second, but it was too little too late, and Greg Eden made sure with a 95 yard interception before Gale dropped as goal to pile more misery on for Shaun Wane.
