ReportS Sale FC 29 v Chester Cheshire Cup 2019 SALE ARE CUP WINNERS Sale made the relatively short trip to Winnington Park on a sunny Thursday evening to face National 2 North promotion chasers, Chester, in the final of the 2019 Cheshire Cup. The blue and whites, playing up the slight slope in the first half, started the game well and deservedly took the lead in the 8th minute when Emiliano Calle Rivas slotted a straightforward penalty from 18 metres. 3-0 However, the lead was not to last long as an attempted clearance was charged down and, several phases later, the Chester scrum-half, Tom Holloway, breached the Sale defence for the first try of the game. 3-7 The men in red were now building a head of steam when full-back, Sean Green, broke clear from halfway, Sale scrum-half, Matt Bradley, was shown a yellow card as he attempted to slow the play down. There followed a sustained period of pressure on the blue and whites try line with Chester hooker, Alick Croft, eventually crossing the whitewash to increase their lead. 3-12 Sale were in need of some inspiration and it duly arrived in the formidable form of hooker, Neil Briggs, who, two minutes after replacing Oli Longmore, emerged from a rolling maul to reduce the arrears. 8-12 Five minutes later came the moment of the game as Sale’s outside-centre, Ed O’Keeffe, received a ball out wide, weaved this way and that and then put a clever kick behind the winger before winning the foot race to touch down. Half-time 15-12 The second half started in the same way as the first with Sale dominating territory and possession and they soon increased their lead as Rhys Davies broke through the defensive line before offloading for Tom Ailes to stride in; Full-back, Robbie Povey, adding the extras. 22-12 The blue and whites were proving irresistible at this point and, following a kick to the corner from Povey, the lineout was gathered in to set up another rolling maul from which captain, David Seymour, stretched and reached to the line. 27-12 If Sale thought the game was won at this point, they were to get a rude awakening as Chester began to prove why they were flying high in National 2 North, winger, Harrison Vare, scoring a fine try after quick hands in midfield. 27-17 With just over ten minutes of the match remaining, the reds scored their fourth try of the game through their number 8, Shay Owen, to set up a grandstand finish. 27-24 However, the blue and whites were not to be denied and following an amazing break from Ryan Parkinson (playing at inside centre rather than his usual position in the back row), Tom Ailes scored his second try to put the game out of reach. Club News by Scott Bambrick Today we see the final game of the season here at the CorpAcq Stadium as we welcome Cambridge Rugby Club. Here at Sale FC Rugby, we have an army of volunteers making sure that the club is fully supported in all we do. This past season the efforts of these volunteers has been exceptional, they have literally donated 1,000s hours of time. This highlights to us that our membership supports the efforts of the Exec and gives us confidence that we can run projects and events, knowing we can rely on people to step forward and help out. One particular volunteer I would like to single out this week is our outgoing ‘Match Day Coordinator’ Caroline Christophers, who has worked tirelessly this past season organising match days. Thank you for your contribution in helping us to make our match day operations more professional. Today we have the Mini & Juniors Awards taking place pre-match and they will be out in full force to support the 1stXV. The young players have been exceptional this season and as a club we can be very proud of what they have achieved. The M&J section in this programme highlights who won each age groups player and players player of the season. Although the rugby season ends today, the work behind the scenes does not. We have already started planning for summer activities. We will see our M&J coaches led by our 1st XV Captain and community Coach Andy Hughes, visit local School Fairs. We will also continue to run both social and walking rugby on Monday evenings. There is also lots of social events going on during the off-season and you can find about these by signing up to the club newsletter. Finally, I look forward to seeing you down here today. Best Wishes Scott Bambrick Dr Scott Bambrick Exec Member - Sale FC Rugby 31

A Piece of History with Salite Sale FC Club Programmes Date: 27th April 2019 Sale FC v Cambridge ...CLUB HISTORY CONTINUES The committee planned to celebrate the Centenary during the week April 10 to 15, 1961. One of the highlights of this week was the special match played on Wednesday the 12th at Brooklands between Sale and an international team assembled by Jim Roberts, Bill Patterson and Eric Evans. This was attended by the President of the English Rugby Union, Mr Tom Voyce and also by the Mayor of Sale who before the match congratulated the Sale Club on reaching its hundredth anniversary. Well over 1,000 people turned up to watch this match. Unfortunately for Sale, Ken Nelson was injured in the first few minutes and could only hobble about as an extra full back, but there were many thrilling movements by both sides. The International side were, however, too strong and they won a spectacular, open game by 20 points to 3, with Jim Roberts scoring the solitary Sale try. A very convivial evening was spent in the club house after the game by two teams and a number of members and friends. On the Saturday of the Centenary week, April the 15th Bradford very kindly agreed to switch their fixture with Sale to Brooklands, and as a curtain raiser to the main game the committee arranged a schoolboys match between Cheshire boys and Durham boys. In the senior game Sale, playing with an adventurous initiative in keeping with the occasion scored a handsome win by 26 points to 3. That evening the Centenary dinner was held at the Grand Hotel, Manchester, and attended by the President of the English Rugby Union Mr Tom Voyce, and two immediate past presidents Wing Commander Jim Lawson, and Mr John Tallen, as well as Presidents of the Cheshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire Unions as well as over 220 members and their guests. This dinner represented the climax of the Centenary week, in fact of the whole Centenary season. But probably the most effective, and certainly the most lasting symbol of this unique events was the magnificent Honours Board erected in the club house and bearing the names of Presidents from the club’s inception, the Vice Presidents in the Centenary year, the Honorary Life Members, and all who played for the County, Country, and the Barbarians Club or had taken part in International Trial games. Many messaged of congratulations were received by the club, including those from the Presidents of the four Home Nations. CLUB HISTORY TO CONTINUE... 33
