DED HOSTS A SUCCESSFUL HEIPA festival Nhlawulo Chauke T he Directorate of Extracurricular Development had the honours of hosting a successful four days Higher Education Institutions Performing Arts (HEIPA) Festival at the TUT Soshanguve Campus. The participants of the event were from TUT Soshanguve Campus, TUT eMalahleni, TUT Ga-Rankuwa, TUT Pretoria West, King Sabata Dalindyebo TVET College, Sefako Makgatho University, Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Buffalo Campus , WSU Butterworth Campus and WSU Queenstown Campus. The performances were in the form of choral music, drama and poetry. The opening ceremony was honoured by the presence of the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Buti Manamela. Manamela said that the festival was dedicated to giving students a platform given to showcase their talent in various generous ways of performing arts. He added that it was exciting to see many students actively involved in cultural performance activities. Addressing students at South Campus Gencor Hall, Manamela highlighted the benefits of actively participating in extracurricular activities. “Most recent example of what it means to actively participate in these acts is Mmatema Moremi who is a product of TUT and I am happy that she’s here so that we see the potential that such platforms can be able to produce.” He added that the institution has produced a lot of young people who went on to make an impact in arts. “I hope that through this platform we are able to produce many other young people who will make an impact in the national platform.” Skeem Saam Actor, Clement Moasa, well-known for his lead role Kwaito, was also present on the day to cast support to students. The entrepreneur started her own make-up business, called Funk Dunk Make-up (FDM), during the course of her studies. According to Manyanye, she started Funk Dunk Make-up during her second year in 2017. The speciality includes beauty make-up, Horror make-up, ageing make-up, face paint pregnancy belly paint, special effects make-up and stage, film make-up. When she was studying towards her National Diploma in Performing Arts Technology in 2016, Manyanye was not fond of her career path but eventually fell in love with it. I wanted to change my course because I felt that I was not good with using hands but I became motivated to do more. I told myself that failure comes from you. If you install that you can then you won’t fail.” She added that believing in yourself is the best remedy to achieve one’s heart desires.
