Australia: − is the world's sixth largest country and its largest island; − is the only island that is also a continent, and the only continent that is also a country; − was the first continent conquered from the sea, and the last; − is the only nation that began as a prison; − is the home of the largest living thing on earth, the Great Barrier Reef, and of the most famous and striking monolith, Uluru [Ayer’s Rock]; − has more things that will kill you than anywhere else. Of the world's ten most poisonous snakes, all are Australian. Five of its creatures - the funnel-web spider, box jellyfish, blue-ringed octopus, paralysis tick and stonefish - are the most lethal of their type in the world. [from Down Under, Bill Bryson, Transworld Publishers, 2000] Please watch out for rogue wildlife on the roads. Wombats, Kangaroos, Camels and wild deer are known to jump in front of vehicles without considering the consequences. 3
Hahndorf Hahndorf is a small town in South Australia. Settled by 19th-century Lutheran migrants, it’s known for its original German-style architecture and artisanal food. German influence is apparent in Hahndorf and is seen in the traditional fachwerk architecture of the original surviving buildings. There are also many restaurants in the town serving German cuisine. Due to the First World War in Europe, in 1917 the South Australian Government changed many German place names. The name Hahndorf was changed to Ambleside after the nearby Ambleside railway station.[5] Hahndorf was re-instated as the town's name with the enactment of the South Australia Nomenclature Act of 1935 on 12 December 1935.[6] There are still references to the name Ambleside in and around the town today. Hahndorf Academy is home to the German Migration Museum, tracing local history. It is Australia's oldest surviving German settlement. North of town, the Cedars houses the studio and art of German-born landscape painter Sir Hans Heysen. Numerous wineries in the nearby Adelaide Hills offer tours and tastings. The village is situated 27km from the Adelaide CBD and is a popular tourist destination. Petrol Riders need to ensure they have a full tank of petrol before they join the ride outs. Saturdays ride is approx. 120km and Sundays is about 75km. This should mean if you start with a full tank you will get back to town on a tank. Ride Formation All rides have a nominated ride leader (RL) and a tail end Charlie (TEC). We observe the following riding conventions: • If there is a marked centre line, and it is safe to do so, we ride in staggered formation with the RL and the TEC next to the centre line. This keeps the group close together so we don’t create problems for other road users. • If there is no marked centre line, or if the RL considers it unsafe to ride in staggered formation, they will indicate and move to the left. All riders then spread out and ride in single file at the left side. When the road improves and the RL considers it safe they will indicate and move back to the centre. Riders then resume a staggered formation. All riders need to be aware of the rider immediately behind them. If they drop back or pull over and stop you need to do the same. That way if a rider has a problem and needs to stop the whole group progressively pulls over and stops. At that point only the RL turns around and investigates. When the matter is resolved the RL returns to the front and the group moves off again. 6
Regardless of what the RL and the TEC do, all riders must assume individual responsibility for their own and others’ riding safety. Riders must always ride within their capabilities, in accordance with the weather and road conditions and according to the road rules. Ride Hazards Please be aware of road hazards and ride accordingly. Animals: The area around Hahndorf is a forested and has many winding roads. Wildlife are active between dusk and dawn, however it is possible that they may still appear during the day. Kangaroos, Wombats and Deer pose the greatest risk as they are large and unpredictable. Please stay alert for animals that may stray onto roads. Sun glare: This can be a problem depending on the time of day and the direction of the road. Decreased speed and increased caution are needed on these occasions. Road surfaces: South Australian roads vary in surface quality. Be alert to changes in the road surfaces and be careful of joins which may cause tyres to ‘track’. Sometimes loose gravel finds its way onto the road, particularly near the edge of the road at left hand corners. There may also be places where debris from trees is on the road. Riders need to be very wary of these hazards. Cars: The vast majority of Australian car drivers do not also own a motorcycle. Consequently many car drivers have no idea how to share the roads with motorcyclists. Please be very careful near cars. In particular, watch out for: • cars entering the roadway to travel in the same direction – many will slow down and then just pull out regardless of the speed of the oncoming traffic (the driver may even look first, and then still pull out); • drivers not paying attention – they may be eating, drinking, making a phone call, checking their Facebook, fiddling with their SatNav or applying make-up (or all of these simultaneously); • tailgating; • merging traffic – many Australian drivers just don’t seem to understand how to do this; • changing lanes without looking – most car drivers rely solely on their mirrors when changing lanes which can be disastrous for a rider positioned in their mirror blind spot. Be very mindful of this; 7
• cars that have a box of paper tissues on the rear parcel shelf, particularly if the driver is wearing a hat – whilst these vehicles typically proceed slowly, they are also capable of moving in any direction with little or no warning; and • cars that just stop – this happens mostly in populated areas when drivers are unsure what driveway to turn into or where they will park once they have entered a roadside car park. While they are having a think about it they just stop on the roadway. Road Rules and Riders’ Licenses All riders need to be familiar with the Road Rules of each state • Speed limits mean what they say and all police cars are equipped to measure vehicle speeds. The maximum blood alcohol content permitted is 0.05 percent and all police cars are equipped to give preliminary BAC tests. Please allow enough time after eating and drinking before riding. • Be mindful of how many standard drinks you have before riding. Please manage your fatigue sensibly. Safety is paramount. All riders need to have a current rider’s license of the correct class for the motorcycle they are riding. Sunburn Riders need to be very conscious of the risk of sunburn. The Australian sun can be damaging after even a short exposure time. The best form of protection from sunburn is to cover up, which is part of responsible motorcycling anyway. However there are bits that are not always covered (face, wrists, back of neck) and these can be easily sunburnt. Please use sunscreen as appropriate. Dehydration Participants are reminded of the need to monitor the amount of water they consume. Australia has a hot, dry climate and a regular intake of water is needed even in mild conditions. Show & Shine Competition This will be held on Sunday between 14:00 and 16:00 at The Old Mill Hotel. There are a number of cafes and coffee shops near the venue. This should ensure fantastic exposure of Vulcan motorcycles and Vulcan Riders. Please respect all visitors and promote the Vulcan Riders Association. The ethos of the Vulcan Riders is Friendship. The public will be invited to vote for the best bike on show, so talk up your bike. 8
Trophies will be awarded at the evening function for: • People’s choice • Publican’ choice • Best bike on Show (Shannons rep) • Longest distance ridden Male • Longest distance ridden female • Best and runner up to 800cc • Best and runner up 900cc • Best and runner up Meanstreak • Best and runner up 1500cc+ (Nomad/Classic) • Best and runner up Voyager/Vaquero • Best Vulcan S So get your bike polished up and be ready to win some great trophies. Only Kawasaki Vulcan brand motorcycles will be judged. It’s a bit of fun with some friendly rivalry and also comes with some bragging rights. Trophies and prizes will be presented at the farewell dinner on Sunday night. Emergencies The emergency phone number for Ambulance, Police and Fire & Rescue is 000. Please note that even if you are in a mobile phone area that is not covered by your provider you can still reach the emergency services by dialling 112 on your provider’s network. 9
