VOLUNTEER INFORMATION GUIDE - 2018 Red Kettle Campaign - THE SALVATION ARMY TORRANCE CORPS
Thank you for your interest in being a volunteer for the 2018 Red Kettle
Campaign. Volunteers are vital to the success of this campaign as it directly impacts
The Salvation Army Torrance Corps financial budget for the entire year.

It is our goal to schedule 600 volunteer Bell Ringer hours, a 100% increase from
2017. The purpose of this kit is to provide the information and tools you will need
in your discussions about what it means to be a volunteer.

             Why We Need Volunteers...

In 2017, donations through the Red Kettle Campaign equaled approximately
10% of the Torrance Corps' annual budget.

$22,950 of Kettle donations were spent on paid Bell Ringer wages in 2017.

It’s a fact that volunteers raise more in donations. In 2017 volunteers raised
nearly 3x more than paid workers ($27 vs $70 per hour). The energy and
positivity they bring benefits The Salvation Army greatly.

With the growing restrictions on kettle locations sites, The Salvation Army has
to find other ways to make the Red Kettle Campaigns thrive. Increasing
volunteer hours is the #1 way to make the campaign a success.

                                                         THE RED KETTLE
                                                               TIMELINE
Over the last 127 years The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign has grown
to be one of the most iconic and popular service opportunities during the
Christmas season. Originating in the United States, Red Kettles can now be
found around the world, in such countries as Korea, Japan, Chile, and many
European countries.

                     1891
                     KEEP THE POT BOILING
Captain Joseph McFee wanted to provide Christmas dinner to 1,000 poor
people, but couldn't pay for it. McFee placed a brass urn at the Oakland ferry
landing with a sign that read, "Keep the Pot Boiling"

                                                     1893
                                          30 KETTLE SITES
The program grew with the help of two young
officers, William McIntyre & N.J. Lewis

                    1897
                    COAST TO COAST
McIntyre and Lewis were transferred to the East Coast and took the
kettle idea with them. Resulting in 150,000 Christmas dinners for the
                    poor nationwide.

                                                       1898
                                       NY WORLD NEWS PAPER
"The newest and most novel device for collecting
money." The newspaper also observed that, "there is a
man in charge to see that contributions are not stolen"

                         1900
                         FRIST BELL RINGER
Cadet Amelia Kunkle found herslef standing by a kettle placed near one of the
busiest areas in NYC. The idea of ringing the little bell to draw attention to
her kettle provided to be an excellent one!

          FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
DO YOU PAY PEOPLE TO BE BELL RINGERS?

Yes. It is The Salvation Army’s goal every year to recruit enough volunteers to cover as
many kettles shifts as possible. With approximately 2,500 hours of kettle time in the season,
that is a tough task to accomplish. Any hours that cannot be filled by volunteers are covered
                                    by hired bell ringers.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MONEY THAT IS DONATED?

All donations that are dropped in the Red Kettle stay in the communities they are
received. The Salvation Army Torrance Corps serves the communities of Torrance,
Wilmington, Carson, Lomita, and Harbor City. Donors can be assured that when they
make a donation in a kettle, they are contributing to the areas they choose to give to.
