Intro
New Beginnings
Welcome to Volume I of Our Love In Color
I launched the Our Love In Color instagram account on a whim. It was one
of those…”wouldn’t it be cool if…” moments. I wondered if there were other
women like me, who loved the fine art style of wedding photography, but
felt disappointed with the lack of diversity in the space.
I quickly discovered I was not alone and started building our little tribe. I
have met so many incredible people, like you, on instagram (and in real
life) who have stood behind my vision. To my surprise, you are from many
backgrounds and even a few different countries. In all honesty, it was your
voices and presence that inspired me to finish Vol. 1 of Our Love In Color.
The creation of this magazine has been a journey! I’ve cried tears of joy
reading the sweetest love stories. I’ve felt angry scrolling through countless
gorgeous wedding images without finding one image of a person of color
(better me than my brides, right!). I’ve also felt the rewarding feeling of
finding the most beautiful image after a long hunt!
Now, I just feel proud.
I dedicate this first volume of Our Love In Color to all the little brown girls
who spend their days daydreaming about love. I hope when you turn the
pages of this magazine, you know your dreams are within reach. Life is
not a fairytale, but it can be pretty fantastic.

The Enchanted Garden

When the Our Love In Color team opened Tara’s gallery for
the first time, we fell in love immediately. Everything about
it—from the luxe floral design to the awe-inspiring gown—
spoke to the the brand essence we are working to create.
This was our first submission and convinced us we were on
to something. So today, we are sharing these beauties first!
Join us as photographer Tara Bielecki takes us on a journey
into an enchanted garden with this breathtaking editorial.
She and her creative team transformed the Denver Botanic
Gardens into lush wedding grounds, while celebrating rich
jewel tones and luxury blooms. Their goal was to create “a
black-tie summer garden wedding.”
“My favorite part of the shoot has to be the connection between the bride and groom.
It’s my goal that every photo I produce evokes a feeling, has a strong connection
between the subjects, and tells an honest story.” -Tara

The bride’s Claire Pettibone gown was a showstopper. It
proves it’s possible to wear a dress with color and have it still be
elegant and timeless.
Thanks to Claire Pettibone’s meticulous detail from her Vagabond
line, the wedding gown lent the perfect inspiration for us to celebrate
color, Tara said. I’ve worked with Claire’s gowns several times this
past year and there’s nothing that compares to the amount of
detail and thought put into the creation of each of her gowns.

The gorgeous natural light in this editorial further elevates the
already gorgeous design and intricate details.
Outside, the way natural light dances around the surrounding
gardens into the space is just a dream, Tara said. It would make the
perfect location for a ceremony or intimate reception space.

We couldn’t get over all of the rich hues celebrated in the design for this shoot: from
soft pinks and subdued yellows to lush blues and natural greens. The color palette was directly
inspired by Claire Pettibone’s Santorini gown, Tara said. Robyn of Bare Root Flora so perfectly
recreated the colors in her floral designs. [She] was able to recreate the beautiful detail of the
wedding gown by using sweet peas, peonies, roses, ranunculus, lisianthus, delphinium, and
allium tweedia to name a few.

We were able to ground all of the color by carrying
shades of blue through the invitation suite, linens, and
the groom’s suit. I feel like this really elevated the various
colors we were working with from the gown and florals.
I really feel like we accomplished something that yes
is luxurious, but I also feel like this editorial evokes so
much joy and that is true to who these two people are
at their core as well. -Tara

A Picture Perfect Vow Renewal

What do you do when your dream wedding portraits simply
don’t turn out the way you imagined? For Monique and
Tony, the answer was simple: replay that special moment
all over again in an awe inspiring vow renewal ceremony.
Old world charm meets modern luxury in Monique and
Tony’s vow renewal, two years after they first walked down
the aisle. You’ll love the intricate details on her gown, and
the floral arrangements will take your breath away!
Monique on their first wedding - We walked down the aisle with
a small gathering of family and friends. The service was absolutely
beautiful. A poetry reading, a wonderful song, and a comedian as
our officiant. Unfortunately, when it came to the lights, camera,
action, our wedding day shifted.
I, the bride, was two hours late. Things were rushed, including our
video and photographs. It was an amazing place to capture our
wedding day, but when we received our photographs back, we
were very hurt and disappointed. Out of over 500 photos taken,
there were only 5 to 7 pictures we liked.
20 Our Love In Color @2019 Thrive+Strive 21Fast forward almost two years later, and we happened to meet Benny & Courtney of Loblolly
Farm at the farmers market. [They] heard our story, and [we] created a private vow renewal
on our second anniversary. We’ve had countless conversations about planning a re-do for our
wedding pictures and we were extremely pleased with what we received this time around!
Beauty by Keena Queen tied the look together with neutral tones to balance her bold
gems & the beautifully detailed gown.

rentals provided by Something Vintage infused the color palette with the perfect little details to
create a southern countryside affair.

Courtney of Loblolly Organic Farm says, After meeting Monique & Tony at one of
our farmers’ markets and hearing their story, I knew we needed to create something
special. Our inspiration came from the abundance of color surrounding their late
summer anniversary, [and] in the muted tones we see as each season comes to a
close. Monique and Tony have an infectious chemistry and warm personalities, so
we wanted to effortlessly blend color and romance just as they do in their marriage!
The Washington D.C. based style team truly made a second chance wedding
dream come true.

A Classic Chic Wedding

There are some classics that never go out of style: a simple
white dress with an elegant cape, a dashing groom holding
a bouquet, a touch of ribbon, or some romantic candlelight.
This editorial from photographer, Selina Whittaker, is an
inspiration for the modern couple who wants those elegant
and memorable touches without all the fuss.
In a lot of weddings and editorials the design can outshine the
couple and becomes all about the decor and the flowers, Selina
said. I of course admire a beautifully decorated room, however, it
is important that the subject is the focus and the supporting actors
don’t outshine them.
Our models had just met that day but they had such an
incredible energy and chemistry, Selina said. We had music
pumping, laughs, everyone was so relaxed on set - we had a ball.

Selina and her team used muted colors with sudden, eye-catching flourishes,
such as turquoise dashes of color from ribbons around the menu and wild
flower settings held together with pops of cranberry and merlot flowers. This
not only created a balance that shined in photos, but minimized the number
of decorative distractions. I love muted tones. I’ve always thought that they make
a room feel warm, Selina said. The muted tones and pops of color make the photos
interesting.
The effortlessly chic and romantic style evident here reflects the energy the models
and artists brought into the shoot, according to Selina. Their collaboration is an
inspiration to any bride who wants her big day to be romantic yet relaxed enough for
friends and loved ones to truly enjoy.

On her journey to build her wedding photography business,
Beya Johnson realized her work was not just about recording
special moments, but also building a legacy that could last
generations. I remember seeing an old photo of my grandmother
and grandfather’s wedding day, and how much she cherished the
photograph, Beya Johnson said. Imagine the major role this
photographer played on my grandparents’ most important day?
Looking at her own legacy led Beya to help others create
their own. I wanted it to be the same for a future bride and groom,
where they can hold on to these memories for years to come and
show these photographs to future generations.
Beya shoots weddings and families, but there’s something
about being there on that special day that Beya finds truly
captivating.
My favorite part of photographing brides is the raw emotion they
show on their wedding day, Beya said. From getting ready with
the bridesmaids, having mom touch up final dress details, seeing
the glimmer in Dad’s face to the ultimate moment of seeing the
groom.

What’s Beya’s secret for capturing such intimate moments?
She says, it’s all about being her subject’s “biggest hype (wo)
man. I remind them how fantastic and gorgeous they look and
compliment on the details they’ve picked (earrings, necklace,
wedding dresses etc). I direct them gently instead of making them
pose in traditional poses
Beya was born and raised in a small desert town in Northern
Kenya and moved to the United States with her father at
the age of 13. Now she is a Maryland based wedding and
portrait photographer. She describes herself as, a wife to a
wonderful husband, a mother to a sweet baby girl & a 7 year old
Boxer named Max.

Who says a child of nature can’t find love in the city? This
editorial from photographer Lindsay Hackney captures the
beauty of the modern bohemian: she’s ethereal and creative
yet grounded.
For this shoot we were inspired by the contrast between hard and
soft—the location and attire both feature strong lines and modern
textures and shapes, but the styling for our bride was soft and
regal, Lindsay said. We loved to show how a really feminine look
can stand out against a more masculine backdrop.

limited budget or with limited time. Whether you can’t get away or don’t
want to splurge, there are still plenty of ways to make your special day all
your own. With the smallest touches—like a faded green tablecloth that
accentuates a bright red cocktail, flowers arranged to look plucked from
a magical forest, taper candles and whimsical shabby chic napkins—a
romantic adventure can be created anywhere.

@2019 Thrive+StriveThis was truly an in-the-moment collaboration, Lindsay told us. Our florist was in the area visiting from Oregon, [and] we had
never met before but we decided we just had to create something while she was here.
This dreamy editorial also reminds us that a dress is not about what is expected, but about what makes the bride
feel beautiful. This breathtaking blush gown from Reformation completes the fairy tale without breaking the bank.
Her dress is in the $300 range and so regal and beautiful! Lindsay said. Brides looking for a relatively inexpensive gown should
find a lot to love at Reformation.

To Puerto Vallarta with Love

After meeting her online, Terrell soon knew he wanted
Jennifer to be his life-long travel buddy. And what better
way to marry her than with a spring wedding at the Martoca
Beach Garden in beautiful Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. With 47
of their nearest and dearest and photographer Kristen
Curette-Hines on board, Jennifer and Terrell celebrated
their love in bright, jet-setting fashion.
A beachfront ceremony accented by palm trees, splashes
of coral, candles suspended in air and lush bouquets—the
couple created breathtaking images of paradise. Following
their sunlit ceremony and photo sessions was a night of
dancing, drinks and local cuisine - along with sparks from
up above.
Terrell has some advice for those who want to do it all on
their special day: Make sure you take time to actually absorb
the wedding for yourself, because you will be pulled in so many
directions...and before you know it, it’s all over. So take time to
pause and soak it all in.

[This was] my first time in Puerto Vallarta. Terrell and I went to college together at
Savannah College of Art and Design, so we’ve been friends for many years. He asked
if I would be their photographer... [and] of course I was like YES! Working with friends
is always such an amazing feeling because you’re just not a vendor, your more than
that. It was a huge honor to document Terrell and Jennifer’s love and also [to] be there
to celebrate alongside them.

A Floral Journey

It’s more than just beautiful flowers: the wedding bouquet is
a signal that the special day has arrived. The bouquet travels
with the bride from the dressing room, to the aisle, to the
reception and sometimes, all the way to the honeymoon (if
she has a special toss bouquet). It makes sense that brides
would want to make sure they are in absolute love with
their flower choices.
Join us as floral designer Hui Lin takes us behind the scenes
through some gorgeous floral options for a memorable
bridal bouquet. This beauty was created from pink roses,
pompous ranunculuses, anemones and godetias.
These flower choices are great budget options for spring
and early summer in Texas, as they are in season and tend
to get pricey in the fall. Hui recommends you don’t get too
attached to these beauties: Your professional florist will be able
to determine the variety and type of flowers that are available and
the best for your budget and needs.
