A Chat with your Incoming President Today was perhaps only one of the few in recent weeks that I paused to be sure I had an umbrella before heading out for errands. It’s been a long, dry spring so grabbing it on the second day of summer seemed more celebratory than burdensome. Why does it matter? That umbrella covers so many important personal and business items that in a moment’s notice it becomes an essential part of my day. Metaphorically, an umbrella has been the symbol of covering, protecting, serving, and encompassing. Recently a colleague used an umbrella to describe all of the ways our workplace unit serves our customers. I’m going to borrow her creative idea and share who we are as the Allied Arts Council, the community’s umbrella for the arts throughout St. Joseph. By design, the Allied Arts Council brings people and the arts together. The AAC provides an umbrella of advocacy, education, and service on behalf of all of the arts throughout our community. Comprised of elected members and agency representatives from our arts community, this group’s expertise gives the Allied Arts Council a robust group of people who keep the arts alive and thriving. By strategic design, the core business of the Allied Arts Council is to provide advocacy on behalf of the arts in the national, state, and local arenas. The arts are for all: the child, the young adult, the community, and the patron. Advocating is at the core of our work. We are committed to actively impacting our youth through creativity and opportunity. Children and youth are the spirit of art. Pablo Picasso said it best: Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up. Try something new. Pick up that old instrument. Find a watercolor pallet and paint. Pull out that old pair of dance shoes. Write a poem. Audition for a play. Throw a pot! Find your art stroke and renew your love and skill. Refuse to grow up – at least as an artist. Partnerships – that’s the new normal. We have numerous partnerships, including our member agencies. Together we are better. Our member agencies offer stellar performances and presentations in many genres. There is always a way to bring people and the arts together. The Allied Arts Council proudly provides an umbrella of advocacy, education, service, and funding to support the arts throughout the St. Joseph community. On behalf of the Allied Arts Council’s Board of Directors, Executive Director and staff, I welcome you to join us in advocating, educating, and serving on behalf of the arts. We are the Allied Arts Council: We bring people and the arts together. Thank you for your continued support of the Arts in St. Joseph! As this newsletter goes to press the Arts Fund Cabinet is still working to reach this year’s $225,000 goal, and Arts Fund co-chairs Denise Meyer and Janie Findley want to thank everyone who contributed to this year’s campaign. They also want to thank all the hardworking volunteers who dedicated their time to this important endeavor. The Arts Fund campaign wouldn’t be possible without the help of the volunteers, and it is through their efforts that we are able to raise funds needed for the support of our funded agencies: Creative Arts Productions, Performing Arts Association, RiverSong, Robidoux Resident Theatre, St. Joseph Community Chorus, Saint Joseph Symphony, and Allied Arts Council.
