“By adding more hardware servers and some simple configuration changes to Amdocs Mediation, we can easily handle double our current predicted data volume and even go beyond that to one billion CDRs a day.” Vodafone is Germany’s first integrated communications company Underpinning the strategy was an innovative move to switch to the offering services based upon both fixed and mobile telephony Linux platform, which was easy to use, and also made hardware channels as well as data, broadband Internet services, and utilization much more cost effective and easy to expand in the intelligent enterprise solutions. Originally a mobile telephony future. Vodafone also needed an application solution that would business, Vodafone Germany was evolving its capabilities to become run seamlessly in the Linux environment while still being easy to an integrated service provider. deploy and set up. Only one solution matched Vodafone’s needs – Amdocs Mediation 8.1. This evolution put massive pressure on operations in terms of number of customers – now more than 40 million in Germany – and Vodafone recognizes Amdocs’ market expertise the volume of data they would generate. Vodafone had estimated that data CDRs (call detail records) would grow by 50 percent a year. Challenges Steudner says, “Amdocs Mediation was deployed very quickly. One > Exponential growth in customer-driven mobile data usage of the contributing factors to the success was the way HP and (so called ‘GPRS’) increasing at 100 percent year-on-year Amdocs worked hand-in-hand. We demanded the system to be able to handle around 200 million records a day. What SOLUTION we actually got was double that – 400 million records a day. That’s > Deploy Amdocs Mediation V8.1 in a low-cost Linux very high performance and exactly the kind of scalability we need environment to support the huge growth we anticipate.” > Integrate Amdocs Mediation with Amdocs Billing Steudner adds that Amdocs Mediation can scale to handle 800 million CDRs a day and beyond. “By adding more hardware servers Results and some simple configuration changes to Amdocs Mediation we > Exceptional performance – more than double the requested can easily handle double our current predicted data volume and 200 million CDRs a day, with possibility to scale to about even go beyond that to one billion CDRs a day.” 1 billion CDRs per day with low-cost hardware only > Expected to reduce hardware costs by 20% by utilizing This kind of scalability is critical to Vodafone because of the low-cost Linux blade servers extremely fast-growing use of the mobile internet and new services that will come with LTE and that customers are starting > Cut average time from session-end to ‘ready for billing’ to demand. by 30%, from 9 hours to just 6 > Improved customer service by delivering call information to customers faster Amdocs delivers greater IT ROI > Speeds up bill processing and fraud detection Another key benefit of the Amdocs solution has been a reduction in hardware costs, helping Vodafone achieve its objective of driving greater value out of support operations like IT. Amdocs Mediation supports the Vodafone strategy to switch over server hardware to low cost hardware with the Linux operating environment whenever it’s possible. Linux makes it easier and simpler to utilize and share applications across hardware platforms, helping to reduce the amount of hardware needed and reduce costs. Vodafone is running the old and new mediation systems in parallel to ensure a smooth transition. The company believes that in the future it will be able to cut the cost of hardware by up to 20 percent. Vodafone has also seen a 30 percent cut in data processing times. Every time a smart phone is used it generates data which is processed for billing and activity analysis. This used take on average nine hours, but with Amdocs Mediation this has been reduced to six hours.
The benefit is that the customer gets a better service because the gap between phone use and seeing how much it costs is reduced. Also, speeding up call data processing improves fraud management because Vodafone can quickly identify fraudulent activity. Amdocs Mediation set to consolidate all mediation functions Amdocs Mediation is currently one of several mediation systems that Vodafone is using. Steudner says, “Amdocs Mediation can help us to simplify our IT landscape. As we want to consolidate our mediation systems onto one single platform, there is a good chance that Amdocs Mediation will be the product of choice as we hope to see some significant improvements in efficiency and a reduction of duplicated activity and resources.” “The deployment of Amdocs Mediation 8 meets another milestone in our strategy to modernize and simplify operations,” concluded Klaus Lange, Director of IT Operations at Vodafone Germany. “With a system that delivers high mediation performance on low-cost hardware, we can support increasing data volumes as smartphone usage continues to grow, while reducing total cost of system ownership.” “As we want to consolidate our mediation systems onto one single platform, there is a good chance that Amdocs Mediation will be the product of choice…”
