Club Captain’s Message Ayoba! Greetings from Africa. I’m currently stuck in a fishing village in Mozambique without internet, eating grilled fish and drinking rum served by twelve-year old bar men. So it’s a short note this week, if only to let you all know I’m still alive… Warm welcome to Tawa, though I’m sure the weather will be nothing but warm as the cold blast of winter’s finally hit home. Capital 2 is still tightly contested, and this weekend’s game has a lot riding on it for University after the hiccup last week against the Gossies (news news travels far, even to deepest darkest Africa). Congratulations to two Uni sides – the Mens’ 4ths (Greens) and the Uni Beavers – for winning their leagues. Both stories demonstrate the Uni spirit. The 4ths, a team that did not know each other before the start of the season, gelled quickly to take the title, winning Capital 7 with a week to spare. Special mention to the Uni Stallions who took second place which means we could have two Uni sides in Capital 6 next year. The Beavers won their second title in a row, putting on string of impressive results at the end of the season to win Capital 10 by a single point on the last weekend of the regular season, thanks to Petone going down in its last match. Well done lads! The World Cup was unbelievable. My ears are still recovering from those wretched vuvuzelas (though we are looking to make them a fixture for the fans at KP). Highlight was calling the Italians cheats on Radio NZ! The World Cup has a first time winner and New Zealand is the only unbeaten team of the 2010. Ole. Go well. Match Report – Gossies v Uni 1sts The Capital 2 match of the week on July 31st lived to its name. The University First XI were playing the Reserves at Kelburn Park and the paying spectators got their money’s worth. Both teams left the sheds early and completed a long and extensive warm-up. In the first 20’ play suffered as a result of both teams battling for possession. However, both Ramiro Gatti and Matt Wilson created a couple of chances for themselves, but could not convert them. In the middle of first half, just when University were starting to gain the upper hand, the Gossies broke the deadlock. Ramiro Gatti freed himself just outside the box and unleashed a powerful shot which hit the post; Jimmy Hardaker was first on the rebound and calmly tapped it in. University reacted and through Ignacio Donovan and Loic Lassueur tested goalkeeper Alexis Wevers from distance, but the Gossies shot stopper denied them. Eventually University’s determination paid off, and Matt Wilson equalized with a deadly accurate right-foot shot which left Wevers no chance: 1-1. In the second half both teams gave 110% in the hope of snatching the 3 competition points. Gerald Joe was stretched off with a groin-injury and was replaced by veteran defender Ma Mahuika who took over as left-back. Corbin Bristol, Wilfred Miller and Giuliano Serrao too got a taste of the action in the second half. Tim Robinson almost scored the goal of the season when, being caught unawares by a Zac Robertson cross, the Silver Fox almost chipped his own goalkeeper. Tempers flared and Matt Ryan was lucky not to be given a yellow card for a couple of nasty fouls. Rodrigo Nieto’s name went into the referee’s book when the Chilean midfielder kicked the ball away in frustration. Krip Miles’ back chat also earned him a yellow card. The Gossies match-winner came from a Rodrigo Nieto’s header following a corner kick, but the game was far from over. With the Gossies concentrating on their defence, University was allowed to keep the ball for long stretches of the game. Schiltenwolf’s men came very close to scoring when Matt Rowe was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty. Veteran specialist Graham Essel’s effort summed up a bleak day for Varsity with the former South African International missing both the penalty and the follow-up. With three games left in the league, University still have a significant chance of finishing in the top 2 and Schiltenwolf’s men must win all their remaining games. The Gossies will have to do their best to help their First Team and take points off Wellington Utd and Tawa A. It’s going to be a heck of a final sprint!
Club News Let’s start with the bad news: the Women’s firsts lost their final game of the league to the Brooklyn Mongrels 6-0. After a pretty even first half saw us 1-0 down at half time, the Wakefield mud (and possibly some ok play from Brooklyn...) overcame us in the second. Some stellar saves from keeper and player of the day Helen saved us from an even more embarrassing scoreline. Brooklyn proceeded to complete the humiliation by pumping Ricky Martin in the clubrooms, chasing us to a car to try and poach a player, and stealing our balls. But there has been some good news in the second half of our season. Things started improving with a 3-0 win over Island Bay, with two goals from leading goal scorer Megs Carson (aka VUWAFC Darts champion) a result of nice team play, and supported by solid defending. The next week saw a dominant performance against Upper Hutt – goals from Christelle, Loz and Chelsea countering a dubious Upper Hutt penalty to give us a 3-1 win. Player of the day was left back Bryn. A slight glitch against Miramar (1-0 loss) was followed by a hard-fought 3-2 win over Tawa. After drawing level with Tawa twice in the first half (thanks to another two goals from free- kick specialist Megs), we frustrated Tawa with our solid second-half defence, including from player of the day Ruth Field. Tawa responded in true Tawa style - by taking out our stand-in keeper, Kim, while she was on the ground, forcing her to leave the field. We continued to fight hard, despite the loss of central back rock Bridget (of Player Profile fame) to stand-in stand-in keeper, and Bronson Carson scored a fantastic goal in the dying minutes to give us a well-deserved win. We’re taking on Tawa this Sunday 1pm at Kelburn Park. We’ve really appreciated the support at home games this year, and it would be great to see a good turn-out this weekend! *** Having finished our league games, it is looking likely that the Women’s 2nd XI will claim second place our division, even though several teams have games-in-hand. One of our best games of late took place mid-week at Te Whaea, against arch-rivals Wellington United Clash. Having lost 3-1 to them at the start of the season, we were keen to redeem ourselves, and did so respectably with a 3-0 win. Goals from Christelle Bott and Tessa Simpkins, along with inspirational coaching from one Mike Cowman, lead us to victory. Thanks to the 1XI players who were happy to help out when we needed. *** Although the minging bog of Anderson Park in a southerly was no Soccer City, the Men’s 4th XI were crowned champions of the Division 7 title after handing North Wellington Varsity a good old-fashioned 5-1 thrashing. Unbeaten now in eight games, including seven wins, the 4th XI are undoubtedly the form team of the division and, despite foul conditions on Saturday, showed why they have won the division with a game to spare. It was a very different story from the previous week when the same team had pushed Uni all the way in a 3-2 classic, but in the rain and mud it was a much more one-sided contest. It was never going to be pretty, and all the goals came from in-and-around the six-yard area (where the ball wasn’t floating) with Ciaran Davis-Wall grabbing his second hat-trick of the season. This has been a particularly impressive achievement from a team that had never
The Professor For the first time, the Professor is going local and heading down to the deep, dark south, where men are men, and the high country sheep are worried. And the Professor’s been able to confirm that there are some students down there who play football, in addition to drinking Speights, rioting and setting fire to couches on the terraces at Carisbrook… Otago University – www.ouafc.ousa.org.nz The Otago University Association Football Club was established in 1939 and has played in Otago competitions ever since. Home ground for the first team is the Caledonian Ground in Logan Park, Dunedin. In 1972 it entered the Southern League, and finished in second place in 1974, 1975 and most recently in 1999. With the reorganisation of football, the club has been part of the Football South Premier League since 2000, and its best placing was second in 2002. In the Chatham Cup, the best result for Otago was last year, when it got as far as the fourth round, losing 1-3 to eventual semi-finalist Dunedin Technical. The only other year it reached the fourth round was 1965. Womens football at Otago University is run by a separate women’s club, however, the two clubs work closely together. Combined, Otago University is one of the largest clubs affiliated, fielding seven teams for the 2009 season.
Italy Win the World Cup!!!! Yes it is true – Italy are the champions of the world…well, the Uni world. We’re talking the 1st X-Box World Cup, played at Kelburn Park clubrooms last weekend. The Cup saw eight teams, representing six Uni sides fight it out for Xbox supremacy using the official Fifa World Cup game. With each team taking on one of the great international sides (and the Women’s Firsts being lumbered with England) the competition was hard-fought and long, lasting right up to the kickoff in the All Blacks match. Italy (played by the reps from the Uni Rangers) went undefeated throughout the tournament, with only a 2-2 draw against Germany blemishing their record. In the final they met the Gossies from Spain. With a goal in the first minute the tenor of the final was set, and to be honest the Italians cruised to victory, thanks to a first half hat-trick from Vincenzo Iaquinta. Thanks to Marcus Anselm, Andy Crisp and Tim Robinson for all the help and the loan of the XBoxes. Look forward to another such event (or XBox Playboy Mansion, we haven’t decided yet)… Teams: England (Womens Firsts), Germany (Gossies A), Spain (Gossies B), Italy (Uni Rangers), Argentina (Goldenrods A), France (Goldenrods B), Netherlands (Scarfies), Brazil (Uni Brow) The winning team from the Uni Rangers - Forza Azzuri
The Honour Roll With the season winding down, many of the lower grades have finished their league competitions and are now on to the cups. The first silverware has been locked away as well, with the Mens’ Fourth team winning Capital 7 with a game to spare (see Club News). In fact, a good result for the Stallions this week will give Uni a 1-2 finish in the division! And the Uni Beavers taking out Capital 10. Second placings to the Uni Stallions, Uni Corns and Uni Honey Badgers mean that a number of Uni sides will be playing in higher grades next year. For the development of the club this is fantastic news.
