bridge, culvert and retaining wall stock which stands at over 2500 structures. This stock contains a wide
variety of asset types in respect of their form, construction, material, span and location. There are a

retaining walls of different construction forms and, of course, large multi-span structures, all located in
both rural and urban areas. The oldest asset is Tarr Steps a 17 span Clapper Bridge reportedly dating

Here's what you can expect to be doing
A key member of the Service, you will be responsible for managing a small team; managing and
delivering a wide range of bridge or structure improvement and maintenance projects and programmes
using a combination of professional and technical knowledge and interpersonal skills.
This will include:
Consultation and negotiation skills
Mentoring support to team members
Procuring, managing, directing, negotiating, agreeing payments and settling claims through SCC’s
existing Structures Framework Contractors, the Professional Services Contract and other third party
resources
Providing advice, guidance and support to both internal and external parties including private
developers, on a wide range of highway structure issues including; technical highway structure design
standards, current highway legislation and legal agreements and environmental, ensuring that the
statutory requirements of the County Council as the highway authority are met.

NATURAL HERITAGE OFFICER

We are looking for a Natural Heritage Officer on a full time, fixed term contract until December 2024,
working as part of the team delivering the 5-year Quantock Landscape Partnership Scheme (QLPS).
The QLPS focuses on the Quantock Hills AONB and its fringing farmland in Somerset. The Quantock
Hills is a special landscape rich in natural, historic, and cultural heritage, but it is a landscape under
pressure. The Scheme aims to better understand and manage these pressures, take advantage of new
opportunities, and find inclusive solutions that will ensure that this special landscape thrives into the
future.

The partnership includes Friends of Quantock, South West Heritage Trust, National Trust, Halsway
Manor Society (The National Centre for Folk Arts), Forestry England, Quantock Commoners Association,
and LiveWest Housing Association as well as the relevant local authorities.
Here's what you can expect to be doing
This post is part of the Quantock Landscape Partnership Scheme, funded by the National Lottery
Heritage Fund (NLHF). The QLPS (www.qlps.org) is delivering a 5-year programme of work and activities
across the project area totalling £2.6m (including volunteer in-kind).
The Natural Heritage Officer will be part of a team that also includes a Community Engagement and
Volunteering Officer, a Historic Heritage Officer and a Project Support Officer.
They will work with communities and organisations within the QLPS to plan and deliver a programme of
nature-based events and activities, lead and commission practical conservation works, and generally
promote the exploration, understanding and celebration of the natural heritage of the area. They will
provide specialist natural heritage and nature conservation advice, lead volunteer tasks and training
events, and commission surveys, monitoring and research contracts.
Like all QLPS staff, the Natural Heritage Officer will work closely with colleagues in the established
Quantock Hills AONB team and staff in partner organisations.
The core of the LPS programme is the Quantock Landscape Conservation Action Plan (LCAP) as agreed
with National Lottery Heritage Fund. The Quantock LCAP details the special qualities of the area, the
opportunities for engagement and the 23 projects which are to be delivered.
A few things about you
We are looking for an experienced natural heritage professional. You will be comfortable working with
a diverse and inclusive range of community audiences and volunteers. You will be knowledgeable about
nature conservation in an English lowland context and have experience of leading a variety of practical
conservation tasks and basic field surveys. You will be used to working in partnerships with a wide
range of stakeholders and partners to ensure shared objectives are achieved.

PROJECT FUND COORDINATOR – LEVEL UP

A bit about us
We are looking to appoint a Project Fund Coordinator to oversee the 'Level Up' project for Somerset's
Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty for 22.2 hours per week on a fixed term basis until 31 March 2022.
The Level Up project, funded through the Green Recovery Challenge Fund, is led by the Mendip Hills
AONB Unit and hosted by Somerset County Council. The project will work across the three Areas of
Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) in Somerset – the Mendip Hills, Blackdown Hills and Quantock
Hills – along strategically important nature recovery networks to deliver pre-planned nature recovery
and engagement work in partnership with Avon Wildlife Trust, Bristol Avon Rivers Trust, Somerset West
and Taunton Council, Somerset Wildlife Trust, South West Heritage Trust and the three AONB teams.

Here's what you can expect to be doing
You will oversee an externally funded nature recovery project called ‘Level Up’, funded through Defra’s
Green Recovery Challenge Fund (administered by the National Lottery Heritage Fund).
You will coordinate the Level Up Partnership Project Steering Group, ensuring regular meetings and
strong lines of communication, preparing agendas and minutes, including regular updates and reports
to managers and the funder. You will coordinate the £248,900 funding in line with the Terms of Grant
and project application, overseeing its programmes of work and ensuring partners and contractors
deliver on time and spend their allocations in line with their Delivery Agreements by March 2022.
Co-ordinate the Level Up Partnership Project Steering Group, ensure regular meetings and strong lines
of communication, prepare agendas, minutes and reports, including regular updates to managers and
the funder.
Co-ordinate the £248,900 Defra grant-funded Green Recovery Challenge Fund project and its
programmes of work, ensure partners deliver on time and spend their grant allocations in line with their
Delivery Agreements. Keep clear and accurate budgets and record of spend.
Work in partnership with AONB Unit and partnership staff and appoint and manage
consultants/contractors to help deliver the project on time/in budget.
Co-ordinate the collation of invoices, evidence and data for project monitoring and evaluation
purposes. Maintain appropriate records and produce reports to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and
project partners as required.
Act as a central point of contact for all ‘Level Up’ information requests from partners and public
received by phone, email and website, ensure that information and key messages are accurate and
effective liaison between appropriate bodies.
Promote the project to the wider community and AONB Partnerships through online and offline media
in liaison with project partners.
Implement and review partnership procedures, eg Health and Safety, consenting, procurement, project
management data processing, in undertaking project work and management of volunteers and
members of the public.
