Administration Payments and Permissions Term 2 newsletters were sent out to parents last week. The newsletters include information regarding the upcoming excursions, incursions and camps for the term, along with important dates and permission slips. A reminder that payment and permission is required for your child to participate. Payments are due by this Friday, 7 May 2021. Please make payment via the Qkr! app or via the payment window. Tanya Buskens can be contacted by emailing tbusk1@eq.edu.au to discuss payment options or to get an update on your account. Naming Property With the cooler weather almost upon us, now is a great time to make sure school jumpers are labelled correctly with your child’s name AND correct class. Winter jumpers are the main source of lost property over the winter period, with children removing them as the day warms up, putting them down and forgetting that they left them ‘somewhere’. To keep students warm (and to save you buying a replacement), please ensure all jumpers are named. We aim to return all named lost property back to students. Amenities Refurbishment A reminder that refurbishments to D Block (Year 6 classrooms) are now underway and will continue for the duration of Term 2. P1 Committee Hello Everyone! A quick hello from the new Chair of the P1 Committee - my name is Liz te Kloot and I am a Mum to a Year 1 student and a 2022 Preppie (and also a 2027 Preppie!). Its my pleasure and honour to take over the role from the amazing Tahnee Ross who has left some big - and organised - shoes to fill. But with the guidance and support of our new P&C Business and Events Coordinator Kylie Neville, I am sure we can kick some major goals in 2021. If the Bake Sale which was held at the Junior Cross Country was anything to go by, we are in for a great year. The Bake Sale was a huge success and our profits were well up from the sale in previous years. Huge thanks must go to the parents and friends who baked and cooked up a storm to create the goodies for sale. We had loads of variety and simple and delicious things to offer both the kids and grown ups alike. The most wonderful part of volunteering is the connection you make with others and meeting new faces around the school, and with the teamwork of the amazing volunteers who manned the stall to sell the goodies - we seriously rocked it. The sun was shining, a cool was breeze blowing and so much cheering and happy faces around the oval. The woeful memories of "socially distanced" 2020 are sure to be soon forgotten! The Bake Sale fundraiser collected just shy of $1,000 which is a massive achievement and can go a long way towards the needs of Prep and Year 1 students, Liz te Kloot P1 Committee

OSHC Growth Mindset Practice Makes Progress Practice is a fundamental principle of growth mindset. The more we practice something, the better we get at it. Practice is what turns hard into easy and can be an exercise itself in persistence. When we practice we are helping our brain to permanently remember new information. We are also learning to do things automatically which helps to free up our brains to focus on learning things that are more complex. It may not always feel enjoyable, but every time we practice something with focused effort, we are improving our performance. Every little bit of practice time adds up and can make a big difference. Ideas to get in the habit of practice Set a timer. Just 5 – 10 minutes is pretty doable Create a practice schedule – think about the times that work best for you Keep track of your practice – find a way to visually represent the minutes of practice you’ve put in Set yourself goals – goals can help us to keep motivated If you’re finding it hard to get started, begin with something you’re already confident with and then move on to the harder stuff Reward yourself – having something enjoyable planned for when you’re finished up practising Deb Rennick Guidance Counsellor Outdoor Spirit Bush Kids After School Care Program After a day of uniforms, bells, bookwork, and iPads, let your child unwind and reconnect with nature. When children immerse themselves in nature, they explore, discover, take risks and learn about themselves, others, and the natural world. Outdoor Spirit Bush Kids weekly activities may include: exploring, nature journaling, eco arts, scavenger hunts, shelter building, fire making, and natural weaving. A healthy dose of unstructured play is also encouraged under the supervision of our trained staff. We follow the forest school philosophy where we provide the time and space for children to learn new skills through play. The aim is to promote children’s holistic development, which in turn fosters resilient, confident, independent, and creative learners. Benefits of which include: social and emotional development, physical fitness, love of nature, improved mental health, learning by experience, and exposure to manageable risk. Our Program is held at Undambi Reserve, a beautiful natural setting where the South Pine Creek meanders through native bushland in the heart of Samford Valley. Our Bush Kids program runs: On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30pm till 5pm $35/child (5-11yrs) on a casual basis, or $280/child for a 10 week term booking (pro rata from the date you start) Please Contact Tammy on 0424276141 or email info@outdoorspirit.com.au to register your interest. ‘Tutus and Tiaras for Koalas’ 6D Fundraiser Recently, the incredible efforts of 6D Samford State School students culminated in the hilarious spectacle of teachers, staff and school leaders running around the oval in tutus and tiaras! After becoming aware of the challenges facing koalas and other native fauna in our local area, the Year 6 students were keen to do something to help out. They designed and created posters, organised costumes and visited classrooms to promote the charitable event. Their hard work paid off last Thursday and Friday morning, as hundreds of students donated a gold coin and eagerly gathered on the school oval to cheer, laugh and support the event. All of the money raised will go to the local charity, 'Life for Wildlife'. This fantastic organisation supports local wildlife carers in acquiring food and other necessary equipment to help injured native animals. Undoubtedly, a very worthwhile cause to get dressed up in a tutu and tiara. A huge thank you to everyone who donated and especially our wonderful staff and school leaders who enthusiastically joined in to support this local charity. (The amount of money raised and the class winner will be announced in the Week 7 newsletter!) Jannice Shackleton Year 6 Teacher Values Tickets 5D Class Party! In Term 1, 5D worked hard to demonstrate the Samford State School values, inside and outside of the classroom. We defined what this may look like and set ourselves a goal. As a class, we were aiming to achieve a total of 450 values tickets collected in Term 1 and if this was achieved, we would hold a 5D class party to celebrate. The class absolutely smashed it and achieved a total of 743 tickets in Term 1. Kyle Walker Year 5 Teacher 5D

OSHC OSHC Damper! In OSHC, we greeted the term on a cool winter’s morning with some damper and a clean-up of our garden space. The children made the damper in our fire pit that we built a few years ago. They all got to participate in getting the fire ready, understanding the importance of how to be around a fire safely and turning our damper so it did not burn. The children were involved in great discussions with each other and the educator and added in the herbs around the garden (basil, rosemary and salt plant) to change up the flavours. The garden space had a clean up that involved a mow and trimming back our plants to help them grow better. We purchased some new compost bins so they were easier for the children to turn the compost and planted some new seedlings which were donated from Millen Farm.
