Three wins and three draws preceded a record-breaking ten match winning streak, which lifted the club up from 14th into 1st place. What seemed like a season-long battle for top spot ensued, with United, aided by the goals of reinvigorated striker Jamie Reid, fighting it out with Woking for pole position on a weekly basis. As the season entered it’s final stages though, it was Johnson’s men who held their nerve as Woking faltered. A late equaliser in the match between the two sides looked to be vital, and sure enough, a 2-0 victory over Eastbourne the following weekend secured the club’s first championship title since 1927, and with it, promotion back to the National League at the first attempt. 19 BARNETFC.COM

WALKING FOOTBALL TEAM WALKING FOOTBALL TEAM International Walking Football at The Hive On the 20th September 1947, Barnet FC played The Sing Tao Sports Club who had just won the Hong Kong Football League, they were the first Chinese Football Club to tour and play in the United Kingdom, with Barnet FC winning 5–3. Fast forward 72 years and whilst talking on Facebook about the forthcoming IWFF Walking Football World Cup in London, I was contacted on messenger by Yan Xinmin from China. Yan organises sporting film festivals in Beijing and at a recent festival of 21 films, she had shown the movie “Underhill“ to her audience. She was interested in meeting a gentlemen in the film who she referred to as “The Burger Man “ ... known to us as Peter Speroni. She talked about a visit to The Hive, and connected through the powers of social media. Yan brought the Chinese Walking Football team to London to play against us which was their first ever fixture outside of China! They spent the day with us ending with a tour of The Hive and having some lunch too. For the record, the Barnet Walking Football team were victorious over the Chinese Walking Football team, winning by 2 goals to 1. Yan’s team went on to have a successful World Cup, just missing out on a semi-final place. A fabulous experience, making new football friends and a possible return fixture in Beijing. WHAT’S THE BUZZ Palmer Josh What’s the Buzz? Last week Boreham Wood posted on their social media platforms a statement by club chairman, Danny Hunter, who ranted about the clubs low attendances. In the statement, which he threatened to lower his financial investments into the club, he criticised the clubs fans and residents of the town for their “laughable” attendances. This rant came after last weekends 0-1 home defeat to Sutton United, which saw just 407 fans attend the game. In his statement, Hunter said that, taking away season ticket holders and away fans, there were only 46 adult tickets brought for the game on the gate. In their three home games as of time of writing, they only averaged 655 fans, of which two games, Chesterfield and Wrexham, the away sides brought a significant following. “I’ve got to reassess what more I can do, as the town clearly doesn’t want to consciously support its club” he said. “Saturday’s abysmal crowd just makes me feel sad, as so much hard work goes into making this club over achieve every year and we just want a bit more support for those efforts. I suppose if you want an excuse, the lower than normal crowd could be put down to 300 adult and OAP £99 season ticket holders, who took up our offer but never bothered to turn up and support us”. Goalkeeper Jay Lynch has made a return to the Football League last week having signed for League 1 side Rochdale. The 26 year old spent several years in the youth academy at Bolton Wanderers, but never made a first team appearances, only making it as far as the subs bench in three Premier League games. During the 2014/15 season, he played twice in League 2 for Accrington Stanley, before joining his hometown club Salford City for the remainder of the season. Then playing in the Northern Premier League Division 1 North, the 8th tier of English football, he stayed with the club for the next 2 ½ years, helping the side gain two successive promotions to the National League North, and narrowly missing out on a third in the playoffs. He then got a transfer to newly promoted National League Premier side AFC Fylde in 2017, where he has played 85 games in his two full seasons. He now moves to the Dale on a free transfer, on a deal set to last 2 years, having rejected the deal given to him by the Coasters. 37 BARNETFC.COM

Phil Neville has said that he thinks that players should boycott social media, in a way to send a message that the abuse that some players receive is unacceptable. The England Womens manager made that claim after Paul Pogba received racist abuse on his social media accounts after missing a penalty in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers last week. “We have to take drastic measures now as a football community. I’ve had it with my players on social media, the Premier League and the Championship have had it” he said. Neville, who played 386 times for United, as 303 times for Everton, continued: “I just wonder whether as a football community we come off social media, because Twitter won’t do anything about it, Instagram won’t do anything about it - they send you an email reply saying they’ll investigate but nothing happens. I’ve lost total faith in whoever runs these social media departments, so let’s send a powerful message: come off social media (for) six months. Let’s see the effect it has on these social media companies”. 40 BARNETFC.COM

WREXHAM AWAY POSTCARD I’m not sure why but Wrexham has always been a trip I’ve enjoyed. The sun was out for the bank holiday weekend & it was shaping up to be a good occasion. Me and my parents left Leeds at 11:30am taking the M62 west across the Pennines. Not that I’d know because as per usual I slept the whole way but the motorway was much busier than anticipated and we ended up sitting in the car for nearly 3 hours arriving at the ground just before 2:30pm. We went through the turnstiles & walked up the steep steps to the away end, sitting in what I now claim to be ‘my’ seat. Following the many pre match announcements in both English and Welsh, the teams came out ready for kick off. We started the half strongly, going forward early but unfortunately on 3 minutes it was Wrexham who scored with their first attack of the game. Hooper received a good ball and chipped it over our keeper to put them ahead. However, we responded positively and just 6 minutes later we equalised. Jack Taylor put a lovely ball in the box that Dan Sparkes was able to bang into the back of the net. The game calmed down and both goalies comfortably dealt with the opposition’s efforts. In fact the most drama of the half came on 31 minutes when the linesman went down and had to be subbed off!! On 42 minutes Dan Sparkes put a lovely corner in that fell to Charlee Adams but unfortunately his shot was mistimed and the defender was able to get the ball. Just before half time there was some beautiful link-up play between Akinola, Shaq and Jack Taylor but the final effort was saved and the score was level at half time. The second half was pretty end to end stuff and we introduced Mason-Clark & Elito in the hope of finding something going forward. On 63 minutes, it was all eyes on Loach again as he pulled off the most impressive save, keeping a shot out that the Wrexham fans were already celebrating! There were no clear cut chances for either team until 89 minutes when Dan Sparkes put in a great cross for Shaq but he was just unable to finish it and the game finished 1-1. We walked back to the car park just next to the ground and headed back to Leeds stopping for an ice cream on the way. We were home by 8pm which made a nice change compared to some of the journeys we have to make down south! It was a good performance from the boys and a well deserved point.
