H O S P I TA L N E W S Ian McQueen’s Family Visits GORDON J HUSK, FORMER CHAIRMAN, BOARD OF GOVERNORS, SHRINERS HOSPITAL®–CHICAGO S hriners Hospital for Children-Chicago held its annual holiday dinner at Medinah Shriners. Special guests were the McQueen family. Ian is a patient of the hospital, and the family was invited to speak at the dinner. Michele McQueen made the following comments: Good evening.Thank you for inviting our family here tonight. My name is Michele McQueen.Yes, McQueen as in Lightning or Steve, depending on what generation you are from. My husband Luke and I have been married for 16 years. Luke is a lieutenant with the Lebanon, Indiana, Fire Depart- ment.Together, we have two pretty awesome children. I mean, with a name like McQueen, how could they not be awesome? Ava is 11 and has a heart of gold. Right now, she is in the middle of a mission she started when she was 4 years old, delivering stuffed animals to residents of nursing homes. Last year, we delivered over 400 gifts and we are super proud of her. She deserves her moment to shine too, as she has been quite a trouper through the fuss over her little brother Ian for the past nine years. May 28, 2009, is the day we learned of the journey we would be facing with Ian.We left that appointment with so many questions and fears. I obsessively searched online for before and after pictures of kids with bilateral cleft lip. I was on a mission to prepare myself for the worst, while also searching for that one glimpse of hope that our son’s couldn’t be here tonight to share this honor with us.There lip could be fixed in such a way that he wouldn’t look so will never be a way to thank him appropriately for our love different and people wouldn’t stare at him.
