ACADEMY CHORALE Somewhere.....................................................................................Music by Leonard Bernstein, Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Arr. by Mac Huff Vocal Soloist: Sarina Charpentier SUMMIT SINGERS, ACADEMY CHORALE AND THE SPA COMMUNITY CHORALE Across the Vast, Eternal Sky............................................................................................................................. Music by Ola Gjeilo Lyrics by Charles A. Silvestri Guest Collaborative Pianist: Dr. Elizabeth Mollison Allison String Ensemble: Kai Sih - First Violin Olivia Fenlon and Per Johnson - Second Violin Gregory Forsberg and Katherine Welsh - Viola Theo Bonin and Henry Giles - Cello Sunlight shines on my face; This is my grace to be restored, born again, in flame! When I was young I flew in the velvet night; Shining by day, a firebird bathed in light! Grey now my feathers, which once were red and gold; My destiny to soar up to the sunlight — shines on my face. This is my grace, to be restored, born again, in flame! Do not despair that I am gone away; I will appear again when the sunset paints Flames across the vast eternal sky. In addition to being a stunning choral piece with soaring melodies and moving poetry, this piece is an appropriate choice for a pre-retirement concert. Both the text and music convey a sense of “coming full circle” returning to your beginning, only wiser and with a deepened sense of understanding borne of years of experience. Enhancing this full circle experience in tonight’s performance is guest accompanist, Dr. Elizabeth Mollison Allison, my “little sister.” In fact, I was her first piano teacher. Our mother, Norma Mollison, was a gifted singer, composer and pianist. Our collaboration on this piece tonight adds yet another meaningful layer of connection and deepens that sense of coming full circle, back to your beginning, this time around with wisdom and gratitude. This Is The Small Song I Sing................................................................................................................. Music by Tim Kraack ’05 Text by Mary Logue Commissioned by St. Paul Academy and Summit School, 2020 This is the small song I sing as day lifts off on night’s own wing. I sing the song and walk about. I keep it low below a shout. Not everyone can see, you know, that songs are meant for us to show. Shout in the dark. Not everyone can see, you know, that songs are meant for us to show The way to others in the dark. In composing “Small Song,” Tim Kraack combines compositional techniques from the past and the present, using centuries-old tools from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance alongside newer techniques like Sprechstimme, vocal slides, pointillism, and polyrhythms to create something that sounds simultaneously old and contemporary. He imagines the piece as an “ear-worm,” a melody to be caught in the imagination as one goes about their day. Elements of the text and melody are broken between different parts, emulating the improvisations and permutations that a melody goes through as one might hear it in their head. In writing “Small Song,” Kraack was inspired by the poem “Song” by Mary Logue, an award-winning poet and author with roots in Minnesota and Wisconsin. 3
Cornerstone.....................................................................................................................................................................Shawn Kirchner Vocal Soloists: Will Sedo, Millicent Benson, and Eleanor Smith Choose Something Like A Star......................................................................................................Music by Randall Thompson from Frostiana Text by Robert Frost O Star, the fairest one in sight, we grant your loftiness the right To some obscurity of cloud — it will not do to say of night, Since dark is what brings out your light. Some mystery becomes the proud. But to be wholly taciturn in your reserve is not allowed. Say something to us we can learn by heart and when alone, repeat. Say something! And it says, I burn. But say with what degree of heat. Talk Fahrenheit, talk Centigrade. Use language we can comprehend. Tell us what elements you blend. It gives us strangely little aid, but does tell something in the end. And steadfast as Keats’ Eremite, not even stooping from its sphere, It asks a little of us here. It asks of us a certain height, So when at times the mob is sway’d to carry praise or blame too far, We may choose something like a star to stay our minds on… And be staid. DIRECTOR’S NOTES I can’t think of a better way to close out a concert than with the SPA Choirs singing the text of Robert Frost’s “Choose Something Like A Star.” The piece asks profound questions about our choices and our vision of the future—the very questions I am asking myself as I look ahead to my retirement from SPA this spring. Teaching at SPA has been my life for the past 34 years, and I have directed choirs and directed musicals for almost five decades. I am a dinosaur! I have loved every minute of it and my joy has been working with great students and adults throughout the years, sharing that same joy and love of singing. I have been blessed to do what I was destined to do for my life’s work. To every one of you who have dedicated time to singing with me, either as a student or as an adult, you are a testament to the need to come together to make music as a community, and to lift our spirits (and YOUR spirits) with music, which often transcends the spoken word. To the entire SPA Community: thank you for all the encouragement and support you have given me throughout my many years of teaching and performing, whether on the Goodrich stage, at St. Kate’s, at Carnegie Hall, or right here on our magnificent Huss stage. SPA’s music program has grown by leaps and bounds since my first years of teaching, thanks to my amazing music and theater colleagues. I am confident that our programs and performances will continue to grow and prosper, challenging our students to explore the lifelong pursuit of expressing themselves through the arts. As one parent and Community Chorale member said to me, “You are going to Intermission, and your Second Act will start soon.” I look forward to what that Second Act will bring in my future! With deepest gratitude, Anne Klus In celebration of Anne Klus’ extraordinary 34-year career, St. Paul Academy and Summit School has begun an effort to endow a fund in her honor. The Anne Klus Choral Endowment Fund will pay tribute to the creativity and joy Anne brought into the lives of her students and the SPA community through music making. The Klus Fund will provide resources to further SPA’s Choral Music program and will support new initiatives such as commissions, guest performers and conductors, workshops, touring expenses, recordings, or other programming that creates the best possible choral experience for SPA students and inspires in them a lifelong love of singing.
