It is really a privilege to work with them. WELCOMING 2020 A big thank you also to our Welcoming Team. It is hard work to encourage and manage (and teach a dance routine) to 350 newcomers in the Stellenbosch January heat and their dedication is much appreciated. The 2020 Welcoming Programme was filled with a variety of social and educational activities for the Academia newcomers. Activities included a quiz night, self-defence classes, Cluster interactions and many more. During the “Residence Education” sessions the focus was on inequality: ‘Be aware of what’s fair’ and ‘The bystander effect.’ These sessions were facilitated by the Transformation Office and the Centre for Student Communities. One of our most successful events was the Sokkie workshop that had newcomers dancing the night away and making many new friends. Another highlight of Welcoming was Vensters. We placed 5th, a very good position. Paired up with Capri PSO and Huis Neethling, we had hundreds of capable and enthusiastic dancers. Thank you to our Academia choreographers – Chante Ellis and Chloe Prinsloo. It is not official yet (!), but we again had the best Welcoming report (highest monitor score) on campus. We are super proud.

Each mentor had several mentor sessions during With just over 400 newcomer students arriving at Academia Welcoming with their mentees, where discussion topics in January, our team of 26 mentors had their hands full! covered many aspects of a balanced university lifestyle. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT CRITICAL ENGAGEMENT AND ENGAGE | ESTABLISH | EQUIP | EMPOWER ENTREPENEURSHIP Academia once again successfully hosted the AcaLead Leadership Development Programme in collaboration with the Frederik van Zyl Slabbert Institute for Student Leadership Development. This course aims to develop the young leaders in our community by exposing them to aspects of leadership, such as self-development, facilitating conversations, ethics in leadership, and leadership in context. Now in its second year, 18 students from Academia completed this course and have had this accreditation added to their academic transcripts. We are proud of the AcaLead alumni who are already in leadership positions for 2019/2020, as well as those who will continue their leadership development journey in 2020/2021. We are excited about the establishment of a Vital Engagement portfolio in the Academia leadership structure. This portfolio was created to highlight and provide opportunities to discuss the challenging issues and topics that are faced by both local and global communities. We hope to create an environment where students are made aware of these issues and have a platform to critically engage with each other in the form of discussions and debates. In the past few months Academia has invited various specialist The first Academia second-hand textbook fair was held in facilitators to share their insight on topics such as gender-based February and was a huge sucess. The Academia Hall was violence and the drinking culture in our community. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AT ACADEMIA We started the year’s initiatives with our “Community Morning Project” during the Welcoming Period. This entailed our students helping to put lunch packs together to give to the Stellenbosch Disaster Unit. Around 150 packages containing a chicken mayo sandwich, apple and juice were assembled. Due to the enthusiasm and good turn out at that event, we will be hosting our ‘Sandwich Sundays’ event in future. This is open to the rest of the Validus cluster. In early March a group of Academia students visited the Stellenbosch Night Shelter. They helped serve dinner and prepared sandwiches for breakfast the next day. We are proud to say that we could not accommodate the large number of students who wanted to participate in this initiative and will repeat it shortly. Throughout the term, the students have also had the opportunity to make donations towards a clothing drive for a We are looking forward to getting everyone involved in a local youth centre as well as the Feminine Sanitary Products variety of projects each month.
SPORTS We are encouraged by the enthusiasm displayed by our first years for the various sporting opportunities that are offered. Due to this only being the beginning of the year, none of the leagues have started yet. However, there have been a lot of first-year tournaments for each sport. Our own Carla Kroon is the first female in Stellenbosch history to serve on the Maties Residence Rugby Executive Committee, previously very much an all male arena! We are thus well placed to make our mark in rugby. The rugby first-years’ tournament was a huge success as the Academia team beat Simonsberg 26-10 to come fifth overall. Academia’s U20 teams continued to perform well so far and will be participating in the 2nd and 3rd league this year. Academia’s hockey players have been continuously busy. During the first weekend in March, matches were played on a socially mixed inter-residential team basis, consisting of Academia, Dagbreek and Heemstede. In addition, we took part in the five-a-side tournament, and our ladies ended up 3rd in the tournament against Heemstede. We are looking forward to competing in the Winter league this year. Academia cricket had a great start in 2020 when we successfully signed up a team for the Campus league and won our first game against Dagbreek by five overs. We are confidently looking forward to the coming matches in the league. exciting year for soccer since the participants have increased by a significant margin since last year. Our ladies soccer team is coached by Savannah Candy, whereas Josh Faber coaches the guys. SOCIAL NEWS, POST GRADUATES AND INTERNATIONAL OFFICE On the 29th of February, we hosted our annual First Year’s dance. The First Year’s dance committee put a lot of work in to completely transform the Academia Hall, covering it with fairy lights and eucalyptuses to match the Enchanted Forest theme for the evening. The night was a huge success with over 100 first years attending. A big thank you to everyone that made the event possible. We went out of way this year to welcome our postgraduate students. The diverse group of international and local students enjoyed a lovely breakfast at the Postcard café where new friendships were forged. The University’s post-graduate office informed students about the support offered to them. In addition to the introduction sessions arranged by University’s International Office, Academia hosted an Information Session for our own international newcomers (we have 116 in total). They signed up for various cultural and sports activities and we helped them get to know Academia. This was followed by a social where they could meet the locals, the leadership team and resident heads. To give them a proper South Afrian welcome we offered an array of South African favourites such as Niknaks, Crème Soda, boerewors rolls and koeksisters… lekker. Unfortunately Coronavirus put a spoke in the ever popular International Food Evening which we normalyy host in our hall. Hopefully we can have this event later in the year so that our international students will not miss out on an opportunity to showcase some of their local delicacies. We have been overwhelmed by all the enthusiasm and excitement of all our new Internationals, they are always ready to strike up a friendly conversation in Tapas, get involved in outreach activities or give it they’re all on the soccer field. Best wishes and remember to wash those hands!

Vorms is beskikbaar by die kantoor.
Daar was egter baie eerstejaartoernooie vir elke sportsoort.
