UPCOMING EVENTS AUTISM IN ADULTS: AN OVERVIEW OF ASSESSMENT AND INTERVENTIONS FOR PSYCHIATRISTS This event is sponsored by the Ontario Working Group on Mental Health & Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder DATE: Thursday, September 9, 2021 INFORMATION AND TIME: 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm ET REGISTRATION: FORMAT: Virtual Event eopa.ca Speaker: Dr. Fred R. Volkmar Recording of live event will be distributed to registrants after the event and available for 14 days. With the recognition of autism as an "official" diagnosis and the awareness of the importance of structured teaching, the outcome of autism began to improve. This positive change reflects both increased awareness, early diagnosis, and provision of effective intervention-based treatments. In this presentation, we will discuss aspects of the current state of outcomes in autism spectrum disorder today, cover some of the challenges for case detection and service provision, and review the best practices for assessment/available treatment literature. Dr. Fred R. Volkmar is the Irving B. Harris Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychology at the Yale Child Study Center, Yale University School of Medicine and the Dorothy Goodwin Family Chair of Special Education at Southern Connecticut State University. An international authority on Asperger’s disorder and autism, Dr. Volkmar has authored several hundred scientific papers and has co-edited numerous books. PSYCHOTHERAPY CONFERENCE: THE COST-EFFECTIVENESS OF PSYCHODYNAMIC PSYCHOTHERAPY, THE PATIENTS WHO NEED IT, AND OBSTACLES TO ITS PROVISION DATE: Saturday, October 2, 2021 INFORMATION AND TIME: 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm ET REGISTRATION: FORMAT: Virtual Event eopa.ca Speaker: Dr. Susan Lazar Recording of live event will be distributed to registrants after the event and available for 14 days. Psychodynamic therapy, including psychoanalysis, is often undervalued by policy makers. Data substantiating its efficacy, effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and frequent cost-offsets are all too often ignored or dismissed along with the sequelae if it is unavailable to those who most benefit from it. Despite pressures for non-medical practitioners to be the sole providers of psychotherapy, there is a crucial place for psychiatrists to be not merely diagnosticians but also the only psychotherapists who have the training to make a fuller ongoing differential diagnosis of medical contributors to their patients’ mental illness. Dr. Susan G. Lazar has presented and published widely on the cost-effectiveness of psychotherapy, including the special place for psychodynamic therapy, in book chapters and articles. Dr. Lazar served as a consultant to The Mental Health Work Group of The White House Task Force for Health Care Reform in the Clinton administration. She is a Supervising and Training Analyst at The Washington Baltimore Psychoanalytic Society, a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
