TBR Spotlight

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Ketterdam is the backwater capital of the trading island
named Kerch. Six of the most talented slums of the city
are tasked with an impossible heist: breaking into an
impenetrable fortress and extracting the most valuable
target in the world. If they succeed, they will become
richer than any of them could fathom. If they fail, it could
mean the destruction of the world as they knew it. Kaz
Brekker, a crippled master thief, is the leader of this
ragtag team. Other members include Inej, an acrobatic
assassin, Wylan, a demolitions expert with a questionable
background, Jesper, a sharpshooter, Nina, a Grisha with
the ability to control the human body, and Mattias, a
disgraced former warrior. Will they be able to put aside
their differences to achieve the common goal, or will the
world fall around them? Comparable to Mission-
Impossible and Ocean’s 11 in nail-biting excitement, the
book features an elaborate plot, but also developing
relationships to entertain a wide variety of people. The
impressive world-building rivals that of even J.K. Rowling,
and will keep the reader completely enthralled until the
book has been completed. The characters, although
criminals, are incredible even with their flaws and
imperfections, and will steal your heart as you see them
progress. This is personally one of my favorite books and I
could read it a thousand times without it getting old.

The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the
Wonder of Consciousness by Sy Montgomery is an
interesting and insightful must-read. In this book, by
following the author’s story of herself and 4 octopuses
(Athena, Octavia, Kali, and Karma) at the New England
Aquarium, one can explore the mind of this alien-like
creature whose capabilities are seemingly beyond the limits
of our understanding. It also gives us an understanding
about the bonds we share with other animals, especially
creatures as intelligent as an octopus. After reading this
book, you will realize that octopuses are not brainless,
squishy masses floating around in the ocean, but
conscious, intelligent, playful beings with their own
strikingly different personalities. Montgomery had a
unique writing style: although the book was nonfiction and
had a sense of formality to it, it still came off as
conversational. This made the book easier to understand
and more engaging. She didn’t just list facts. Instead, she
pulled us through her own story, while masterfully
weaving in information about the fascinating animal that
the octopus is. Being an animal lover, I thoroughly
enjoyed this book, and I assure you that it will fill anyone
who reads it with a sense of wonder and a newfound
                                            affection for these amazing creatures.

Quaranteen None of this was expected; none of this could be predicted
It’s as if this the world has gone ablaze with us being restricted
Spotlight We feel lost, we feel empty, we feel alone
All of these trapping feelings in our own home
Home, however, seems the safest place to wander
Leaving us time to collect our thoughts and truly ponder
But the choice is ours, do we wallow in the sorrow, soaking up all the negativity
Or accept the negatives, and find beauty within our captivity
Stay teary eyed over losing big events and things that were normal
Or look at the positives and cherish the abnormal
Cherish this new lifestyle and new obstacles we must figure out and overcome
Even if it gets to us and makes us feel numb
I can only pretend video chatting is a great form of social interaction for so long
But I know I must do so, because going out and seeing my friends is wrong
I’m trying to count down the days until we are out of this maze
              But it feels never-ending
If I were to say I’m truly doing fine, I’d be pretending
I’m excited to see my friends, without them, everything feels empty and vacant
I wish this virus would hurry up and leave, I’m starting to get impatient
I’m excited to go back to school and experience feelings I haven’t felt in a while
Feeling the stress the night before a test and seeing the people who give me the urge to smile
I yearn for those late nights staying up to study or rushing to finish my assignment
I took those small things for granted when we weren’t in confinement
Being encompassed with boredom has given me time to reflect upon the goodness of others
The people fighting to save our lives are our own sisters and brothers
Their strength, compassion and willingness is what is helping us push through
To the people of the community working hard on the frontline, I thank you
I walk around outside and I am welcomed by upbeat music playing
It reminds me that there is still good news in the world, underneath all that is dismaying
People greet each other from afar which shows that there is still hope
Knowing that people are still trying to come together during this isolation helps me cope
I’m upset over losing my basic freedom, I miss seeing my friends
But the sooner we listen and enforce the rules, the quicker this will end
And then we can go back to normal.
